Sports in the family

badmintonSports should have been one of the children’s activities. Yes, there were swimming classes but no volleyball, soccer, softball or basketball. Sure, Lauren kicked her way to Kung fu lessons while Marielle took rock climbing and fencing during the summer. I think the reason I didn’t encourage contact sports was because I was also brought up that way. All of the siblings studied piano lessons and my mother didn’t want our delicate hands to be injured. So in the same manner, I also discouraged my girls to take up sports that had the highest risk of injury to their hands. “Sports is the only thing that we lacked.” Not that my kids are ungrateful. They appreciate me for the arts and crafts, ballet , piano, voice, theater and the light sports lessons. It’s just their bodies needed more physicial exertion.

Oh well , mommy is not perfect and besides they can always start something on their own like badminton or tennis. It’s never too late. The only consolation I can offer at the moment is membership at the fitness gym. Team spirit may not be present during the exercises but bonding with their mother and the other members can be just as rewarding.

I’m such a klutz and my only sports is chess. Is that a sport? Not much physical activity there.

my son is in baseball this year so i’m happy about that :)
with this little girl coming up, i’m already thinking about dance lessons coz that’s what i did when i was little. but judging the way she kicks everytime we watch her brother play, i might sign her up in soccer :).

My Mom used to forbid me to play volleyball and other racket sports because I used to play the piano. Now, I play badminton and tennis. Hehe!

Toe: that’s comforting to know. At least my daughters now have the choice to take up the sports they want.

When I buy billiards equipment and accessories, I always buy in 3s, i.e., one for myself, and the other two in reserve for my twin sons (just in case they get to like the sport that I have learned to love). But guess what? it was my eldest daughter who shows interest in the sport. She accompanies me in matches, tournaments, and practice sessions. And has shown a keen interest for the sport.

This got me thinking, this sport is dominated by guys. Yes, there are women players - very good ones too! But still, most of the players who play in Puyat are male. Thus, I thought to myself that i might as well teach my closeness rather than others do it. And warn her of the dark side of the sport, too. Teach her I did, under one condition - that studies remain her priority. And guess what? She is Class President, President of her school’s student body council, and a scholar! She is also a pingpong champion and first-runner in badminton! Beauty and brains - people that with regards to my closeness.

A good friend of mine once remarked how sports can be used as a tool for the kids to stay away from drugs. I think my friend is right. Proof is his son, which is also a good friend of mine. Though I have to admit, sports is more than a channel to keep children away drugs. Sports has allowed me and my kids to share a special closeness that words cannot even describe. And i kid you not!
