The SM Mall of Asia , the biggest mall in the Philippines and the third largest in the world (behind only the West Edmonton Mall in Canada and the Golden Resources Mall in Beijing, China). had its grand opening last May 20. None other than our beloved President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo graced the ribbon cutting ceremonies. Even if we live 10 mintues away, I didn’t feel like wheedling my way through the crowds. I expected lots of shoppers converging during the opening week. However today, I decided to have some bonding time with the girls. This week is a busy time for me as I’m preparing for Luijoe’s 6th death anniversary on May 27. (will talk more on this later). I wanted to make sure that the girls won’t feel left out during this difficult week.
So off we went including Pat, Lauren’s boyfriend. SM Mall of Asia is a sprawling two storey mall with a colorful and festive design. I would imagine it should be a two storey affair. After all, the land that it sits on was a body of water. It is built on 19.5 hectares of reclaimed land and has a gross floor area of 386,000 square meters. The design is spectacular and so unlike their usual dull looking box-type malls.
From their fourth floor parking area, the view reminds me of a city in itself.

The use of natural light is evident in its design.
Another unique aspect of the mall is the seaside gallery. One crosses through the blue pedestrian walkway to reach the other side . Too bad the weather looks gloomy to stroll. I love the idea of a seaside view.
Although there are maps everywhere, it doesn’t state the “YOU ARE HERE” . The best thing is to ask the guard. The girls thought Cafe Breton had a special offer so we went there only to find out they didn’t have a promo anymore.
I thought I wouldn’t be spending but with young kids, they are always hungry. Crepes and coffee is a treat from me.
After our snack, Lauren and Pat ventured to the seaside while Marielle and I explored the other parts of the mall like the cinema, the skating rink, the food court. There’s even a beer drinking station. Yuck. (If you want the SM Mall of Cinema schedules, click here.)
Then we’re back at the South wing which houses the spa, salon, clinic, derma and health-related shops.

That’s quite impressive. So big. The malls here in Winnipeg are small compared to the ones there. I live in Canada but I haven’t been to Edmonton Mall yet. Need to save up for that trip.

niceheart: Malls are like hangouts here. I don’t think people really shop. I’ve heard Edmonton Mall is so huge. I wonder what they sell there.

Hi!! I haven’t been there yet, even though it’s near my school
I heard that there are FOUR Starbucks in Mall of Asia. I think my family and I are planning to visit it soon… before it sinks, that is! Hehe.

Jessica: I only saw one starbucks but only because I was not paying attention to the stores. I worry about the foundation. Imagine sitting on water. I tell my daughters to always watch out for the emergency exits.

being a mom to a 2 yr old girl named fiona, i admire your strength and ur works.
i agree with u. loosing someone hurts very much. but u cant describe how painful it is to loose a child. havent experience it and i dont want to experience it…. but i am always scared of experiencing it.
ii would just like to try, ask if you know how i can get a hold of information abt space rental in mall of asia.

well…. in jessica soho reprt, she said that it will take 1 day o kaya kulang pa pra malibot ang MOA…..hmmmmn that’s not true. honestly….., HONESTLY! nilibot namin un wala pang dalawang oras! it’s not that big based on what we heard/read about.
one thing that i really enjoyed is the seaside.. wooooooooow awesome, feel the air. no other mall in this world n may ganong sight no! talbog parin ang West Edmonton Mall & Golden Resources Mall kahit sila ang pinaka malaki. go MOA!

hey hey, where have you found that “foot for the gods” spa.. the last time I went to the mall of asia my feet ached so much because of walking all around the mall plus ice skating that I didn’t get to explore much of the outside.. me and the rest of the family got so tired (and our feet are sore!) that we went home to rest before we can fully explore the mall… too bad we didn’t spot that spa earlier.
I sure do hope that the MOA won’t sink.. @_@

MOA makes us prouder as pinoys! walang sinabi ang mga malls dito sa Dubai pag dating sa mall spirit. We’ll definitely return to see the rest of the mall. BTW, you can really spend the whole day there…Imax, dining, strolling…just leave the shopping later in the day.

yup, The SM MALL OF ASIA is sit on the reclaimed land but for me its okay coz most of the major tourist destination and world class- resort in the world are sittin also on the so- called reclaimed land like for instance in DUBAI. They have PALM ISLANDS there that is actually a man-made island thats shaped like a big palm tree when u look at it on the sky.So there’s nothin wrong with that guys me myself i saw MOA in the philippines and mah god its a overwhelming experienced to me to be on that place. Philippines is a great country when it comes on a tourist destination so-much to offer, I love the place, the people and the culture itself.
Here’s the fact you want to know bout the SM MALL OF ASIA in the Philippines…
*The SM Mall of Asia is the largest shopping mall in the Philippines and the 3rd largest shopping mall in the world. In terms of gross floor size, it is next to the Golden Resources Mall in China and the West Edmonton Mall in Canada). It opened on May 21, 2006[1].
*The Mall of Asia was constructed within the reclamation area, west of Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City, aptly nicknamed “Bay City”. It is built on 19.5 hectares of reclaimed land and has a gross floor area of 386,224 square meters. The mall is located at the southmost tip of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue. A roundabout was constructed in the front of the mall with a huge bronze globe similar to Universal Studios. An esplanade was constructed at the back of the mall where it served as the observation center for the First World Pyro Olympics in December 2005.
*The mall consists of four buildings interconnected by walkways: the Main Mall, Entertainment Mall, and the North and South Carpark Buildings. One of its unique features is a 20-seater tram to make it easier for shoppers to go around. The management’s priority is to make sure shoppers will not get lost inside the mall. There will be two concierge desks—one in the Main Mall and another in the Entertainment Mall. Maps will be given out, and there will be signs aplenty. The Main Mall will include shopping and dining establishments, the food court. The South Parking building will house the SM Department store and half of the 5,000 parking spaces while the North Parking building will include the SM Hypermarket, a spacious office space and more dining areas.
*The mall’s main attraction is the first ever IMAX theater in the country, along with a Director’s Club Theater for intimate screenings (30 La-Z-Boy seats), a Premiere Cinema, and six regular cinemas. The mall also features an Olympic sized skating rink and a science museum. The mall also provides office space. Dell International Services, a subsidiary of Dell, Inc. occupies a 13,470.5-square meter area at the second floor of the north parking building of the mall.
*Expansion plans
Adjacent to the south parking building, a two-hectare area has been allocated for the site of a 16,000-capacity multi-purpose coliseum/arena for sporting events, concerts and entertainment shows. It is set to rival the 50-year old Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City. Furthermore, a planned convention/conference center measuring 12,000 square meters will be built as an attractive venue for major conferences and trade exhibits. The convention center once constructed, will be a newer alternative to the Philippine International Convention Center, erected in 1976, located a few blocks away. Along with this, two hotel developments, one with a casino, are also planned for construction.
Also set to the right of the north parking building, The SM i-City is a 69,300-square-meter area allocated to serve as a prime venue for companies engaged in software development and IT-enabled services. A mix of single and multi-storey buildings will be developed to provide for the office and workspace requirements of prospective IT-related locator companies and for support office and backroom operations of business process outsourcing. The first building, OneE-comCenter, began March 8, 2006 and is scheduled for completion in July 2007.

I heard it’s preety big and awesome. I haven’t been there but my filipino friends and relatives told me that I should go there sometime..
This is really one of the things I’m proud of about the Philippines. Atleast despite of the bad publicities of our country, I can still tell my foreign friends that thinks philippines is just full of garbage, PHILIPPINES IS STILL THE BEST WHEN IT COMES TO MALLS!! and I’M REALLY PROUD TO BE A FILIPINO!!! PHILIPPINES IS AWESOME!!!

I like (MOA) Mall Of Asia, I lived in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and isa sa pinag mamalaki nilang mall ay West Edmonton Mall lolz, biggest mall all over the world daw.
Eh hindi na ngayon, MALL OF ASIA is the best! Everything I need is just right there, don’t have to go anywhere, sorry, hate ko ang A&F and Holister lolz.

Hangal ka. 2 hours? baka naman wala na kayong tiningnan nun. That is, granting, you werent’ so stupid as to think that just one of the 4 buildings was the whole mall already. Hopefully, you did not mistake the parking facilities as the whole mall. To add to that, sana naman hindi ka probinsyana na pinag ipunan pa para makapunta sa Manila at sa MOA nagtungo, at inaksaya ang savings sa paglibot sa parking lot.
