M is very lucky that she was able to receive help early. A lot of parents and teachers often mistake children like her as "hard to control" and will therefore make life miserable for them. At least M had a loving and supportive mother who never gave up on her.

Agree with you on that... A lot of parents tend to compare their children without really understanding the qualities of each individual. I did fall into that trap but I am learning to realize that everyone is unique. Kudos to you!

Hahaha. I sit beside M during Chem16, she has a whole range of colored pens--she uses different colored ones every time.

@ralphot- I had a brother similar to M who coulnd't even speak properly at age 4.Maybe you can start stimulating your son through creative means like what I did to M

@Gail- no wonder you are so artistic. Lucky of you to have creative parents.

Yup, my mom is an artist. Actually, both my parents are. They met in college while taking up Fine Arts. :) Maybe that's why they're used to raising visual-learner kids :P Both my sister and I are. For all we know, they could have been visual learners themselves too, right?

Hmm... Can this be inherited?

wow! thanks for this great writeup.

this reminds me of my younger brother. his speech developed late (around 2-3, if i recall it right), but his motor skills were on overdrive as early as he was 6 months old. we all thought he was a slow learner, but when he turned 5 he was already memorizing encyclopedias! he even learned how to read and write russian at age 7. turns out he'll be the smartest among us.

which brings me to my son's case. he just turned two the other month, and he's almost the exact replica of his uncle. late speech but hyperactive. although he still hasn't developed a keen interest on reading and what-not, he can easily understand music and the arts... which is precisely how i want to rear him.

i'll scour for a copy of that book.

@Gail- That's so nice of your mom. I bet she is an artist like you. I did some crafts too but mostly based on books. I can't draw or paint but I can be creative.

Most likely you are a visual learner and your mom's stimulation in the arts paved the way to your learning. You must have such a colorful notebook just like M's.

This is strange... The way you taught M is similar to the way my mom taught me, although our activities were predominantly arts and crafts. I learned shapes through shaping clay, painting letters, etc. I only learned to read between the age of 7 and 8 (not even slight reading before that). Although my mom said that I already had a good grasp of the color wheel (without me really knowing it) and attention to drawing details at the age of 3. Maybe I was an alpha child? :P Seriously though, I always decorated my notes with cartoons and colors back in school. So maybe I am a visual learner :P
