Kids Talk
M asked me for some memorable childhood anecdotes which she needed for an autobiography. Fortunately, I started a Family newsletter in the mid eighties. In those days, sending postal mail was the most affordable means to communicate with my siblings in the USA and vice versa. “The Toddlers” column was dedicated naturally to our toddlers (Luijoe wasn’t born then). Too bad the last issue was 13 years ago when the internet replaced our postal means of communication.
I’m sure those with kids have their own collection of cute child talk.
Here are a few from my two girls:
3 year old Lauren
One time, while watching TV , commercial breaks filled the TV screen. For instance Tide Bar is compared to Brand X and the same goes for shampoos . Lauren kept bugging me Mom, buy that everytime a commercial came out. I explained to her that commercials intend to persuade us to buy their products . They also claim it is superior when in fact it’s not . Lauren mused and thought for a moment on my meek explanations.
Then her eyes brightened I have an idea. Let’s buy BRAND X instead.
4 year old M
Miriam College Pre-school is known for its environmental consciousness. They are taught early on the segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable garbage. One afternoon, M played with her ball along the streets but the ball rolled to the drainage eventually gone forever. Noting her distraught face, I promised that I’d buy her another ball.
Her worried look tugged at my heart.
Mom, garbage that clogs the drainage can cause floods
I comforted her “it’s okay, it’s just one ball. One ball won’t flood Manila.”
The following week, M played with the new ball I promised to buy her. Unfortunately, the ball rolled again to the drainage.
M cried and cried. I was wondering why she was inconsolable.
I hugged her “It’s okay. I can buy another ball”
With tears pouring down her cheeks, “Mom , two balls already fell to the drainage”
I continued to hug her “That’s okay . It was an accident”
Then she covered her face “You don’t understand , mom. Manila will now get flooded because of me”
3 year old Lauren
In the late 80’s women bangs are often puffed up with hair spray or fizz.
Lauren watched me intently as I combed my bangs and finally setting it in place with a hair spray.
She looked triumphant with her impish grin.
That does it mom! No more cockroaches
awww

This entry makes me laugh
@jeric- it makes me laugh to this day. cuteness
Yes, our kids do grow up so fast…
And this post make me laugh and at the same time feel nostalgic about how my own kids are growing up fast.
Your stories of your girls are so heartwarming :).
It’s so cute to hear that M was so concerned of flooding Manila with her balls.
It’s so funny how Lauren thought you were killing roaches on your hair!
I sooo love M. I can’t believe she was so cute as a kid
Kwela talaga!
I used to love Bill Cosby’s “Kids say the darnest things”.
I started making a journal of my toddler’s moments too, triggered by Annamanila’s earlier post. And now reading this just encourages me to keep at it.
Natawang-naawa naman ako kay M. It must be akin to “emotional torture” having guilt like that. Must to tough for you to put it into context that time.
These are great. I would like to add this post to the following blog: http://www.1blog4every1.com I am having it custom designed but this would be perfect for the world to see. Blessings to you and your family.
“sending newsletters to communicate with families abroad” — now that’s a very creative way to keep in touch with loved ones, at least in the absence of Internet.
Lauren and M are so cute in that portrait photo.
@sassymom- i got nostalgic. I miss little kids too
@KK- i love hearing stories of children’s logic
@tiffany- M is so concerned with nature and environment
@auee- please share one day
@kerry- ok sure
@feng- Too bad I got lazy to continue with the newsletter. M was petrified in that photo so Lauren hugged her.
