What Is A Blog?

If you’re a regular visitor of my blog, you already know what a blog is. But some people I meet don’t know. I’m sure some of you faced a similar situation below.

For instance, when I take a photo in a restaurant, I am sometimes asked by the owner: are you a journalist?

Me: No, I’m a blogger.

Owner: What is a blogger?

Me: I write for my blog.

Owner: What is a blog?

Often, I take the word blog for granted that I don’t really bother to explain myself clearly. I found this video through Juned that explains what a blog is in plain English. Watch it.

If you want a more detailed description, read Darren Rowse What is a Blog?.

‘From “Web log.” A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is “blogging” and someone who keeps a blog is a “blogger.”

Now that you know what a blog is, you might want to get updated with new entries using an RSS Feed reader. Here is a video to understand what an RSS Feed and how to subscribe to a reader.

It’s good to never assume isn’t it? I’m still amazed by how many people have never heard of a blog. Then again, neither had I just over a year ago. The word is spreading…but it’ll only spread if we continue to explain. :-)

Came here via entrecard. Nice blog. :)

@lightening- we can help promote blogs so more can start a blog.

“A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web.”

So does that make a blogger a jounalist, too?

@ruth- I think journal meant more of a “diary”. I believe journalists have ethics and an editor who checks their writing. Bloggers are basically their own editor

Hi Noemi! Same here. Some of my friends, educated and even techie ones, have very little idea what blogs are, and bloggers do.

i often get the same question whenever people see me taking pictures. my one-liner answer is always, “it’s my online diary.” :-)

I’m actually having a hard time explaining it to my relatives, including my mom and dad, and other siblings. Some of my classmates doesn’t even know about blogging. And, they just don’t know how lucky bloggers are at some point! hehe..

Keep on going and the chances are you will stumble on something, perhaps when you are least expecting it. I have never heard of anyone stumbling on something sitting down.
