Noemi, I agree with you that you shouldnt rely on your children for your retirement plan. good point!
In my opinion I would focus more on getting real estate property ownership. This is a quite secure option for your retirement plan, especially after the latest stock market crisis. I do not really trust the banks and I prefer to have something in my hands that I can touch.

cheers,
Thomas

Of course, earning power is not the same. Inflation has been overtaking income for decades, I'm assuming. For ordinary career people, the only way to break free is to go abroad.

you do have a point The retirement planning is actually for those in employment. I look at retirement as savings for contingencies.

I think RETIREMENT is a western/foreign concept because it's goes along well with their concepts of time and seasons. Our concept of time is more like overlapping and not compartmentalized as other cultures do. Some Filipinos who retire (usually from being employed) go into another economic endeavors like farming or other enterprises. So in effect, Filipinos do not retire, they move on to another "work".

Like me, when I "retire" from my current employment, I would either be involved in our rice trading business of blog like you do. :-)

I do have plans to establish a retirement plan for myself (I'm 21 btw) . Unfortunately, I emancipated myself from my parents and shouldered the costs of going to law school on my own. I think going to UP Law (and becoming a lawyer after) is an investment in itself. At the moment, I try to save up money, even on a minimal rate. But they end up being spent on emergency expenses *sad*
