Are you happy with the new Zodiac signs?

st-portolan

I caught on the horoscope just once in my life. I was around 14 years old when I had this huge crush on a guy I met in a class party that I hosted at my home. He had whispered sweetly to me that he’d give me a ring. I waited eagerly for his call the next day. While browsing through the news paper, my eye caught on the Horoscope section. I can’t remember the exact words but it said something about a “phone call”. Right after I read the horoscope, the phone rang indeed and it was my huge crush. Perhaps it was just my luck that day. My crush didn’t call me back after three calls and with it , the horoscope stopped working for me.

Maybe I was looking at the wrong Zodiac sign.

All these years I thought I was a Gemini. When astrologers said that the sun is in Pisces, it’s really not in Pisces. I always thought our astrological sign was determined by the position of the sun on the day I was born. Everything I thought I knew about my horoscope is wrong.

New is astrology has had issues from its inception. (Aside from the fact that it tries to link personality traits with positions of the stars.) Ancient Babylonians had 13 constellations, but wanted only 12, so threw out Ophuchicus, the snake holder. Libra didn’t even enter the picture until the era of Julius Caesar.

According to the Minnesota Planetarium Society, here is where the real signs of the Zodiac should fall. Get ready for your world to change forever.

Capricorn: Jan. 20-Feb. 16.
Aquarius: Feb. 16-March 11.
Pisces: March 11-April 18.
Aries: April 18-May 13.
Taurus: May 13-June 21.
Gemini: June 21-July 20.
Cancer: July 20-Aug. 10.
Leo: Aug. 10-Sept. 16.
Virgo: Sept. 16-Oct. 30.
Libra: Oct. 30-Nov. 23.
Scorpio: Nov. 23-29.
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29-Dec. 17. (Yep, this one is new — read all about the Ophiuchus way of life here)
Sagittarius: Dec. 17-Jan. 20.

Are you happy with these new Zodia signs? What about the Ophiuchus: Nov. 29-Dec. 17?

Come to think of it, it doesn’t matter to me now because I stopped believing in Zodiac signs since I was 14 years old. The question is did your sign really change? Or it doesn’t matter because our destiny or personality is not shaped by the stars or the sun.

  1. I’ll miss being labeled as an Aquarian but it really doesn’t matter because I’m not into horoscopes and astrology now. We are what we are because of what think of ourselves and not because of what the stars dictate.

  3. Hello Noemi,

It is likely that the 12 signs will exist. The 13 Zodiac signs have always been there. Astronomers know it. Astronomers also know that whatever you see now in the skies are impressions of the events that happened thousands to billion of years ago. For example, we see the impression of the Sun more than 8 minutes later (distance from the Sun divided the speed of light). And the Sun is the nearest star to us.

Those who relate the Zodiac (the positions of the stars which happened million of years ago) are not astronomers, they are astrologers. Astrologers, are not scientist. Astrologers are no different to manghuhula in Quiapo.

  4. when i learned about the news, I couldn’t stop laughing but at the same time I was happy being pisces and suddenly I’m an aquarius.

I never believed in horoscopes but it’s just funny how things shake up everyone. Everyone in the family started joking around that our personalities would have to adjust now to adapt to our new zodiac signs; especially my dad who’s now ophiucus – whatever that is.

Aww too bad, I have Pisces mugs and necklaces.

I wonder what the people in between zodiac signs feel: Feb 16, Mar 11, April 18, etc.

  7. I’ll always be Pisces. I can’t be an Aquarius. Haha! Well, whenever I describe myself in terms of horoscopes, I always say that I’m a Fire Snake Piscean (descriptions of Fire Snake Pisceans always match me anyway).

The funny thing is that they’re coming up with new sets of rules like…the new zodiac only applies to those born from 2009 onwards etc. Or that the signs must be based on the Western concept of 12 seasons (if that’s true, then they should also take climate change and global warming into consideration).
