Follow me in twitter @momblogger.Anne, a friend of my daughter, spent Good Friday with us. While having breakfast, the discussion turned to money matters. She gushed over Lauren’s responsible spending habits despite her financial independence. But of course, I instilled money management early on in their lives. Mind you, my daughters are thrifty but know how to spend and party hard.

My family is no stranger to financial challenges. If there is one thing I often remind my children, it is “no matter the state of our financial situation, we need to implement some sort of money management or else all that money will be gone in an instant.” The worst financial challenge we faced was in 2004. Call it martial law, but hard times called for drastic measures.

Under my strong-woman rule, I imposed a few family rules that my loving husband adapted nicely too. He had no choice, right? Let me share a few of my rules that might be useful to you because I know each family sets their own rules. This is what we discussed.

I often correct myself whenever the kids used to ask me “mom can we afford to buy _______?”. See, my standard reply is always ” I don’t have money” and true enough, money was always tight. I changed my words—from limiting ones to those with a positive energy vibration. I say ” I don’t have the cash right now but we will soon have and make priorities for our needs”.

When asked “Do we have enough?” I answer with “Yes there is plenty” which affirms that there is enough for us in the family. If you ask the angels for just enough, that’s exactly what you will get. Try asking for ‘plenty’ and affirming ‘plenty’ and you’ll always get much better than what you expect.

I soon found out the words that I say have a direct impact upon my finances. of course, there is that matter on financial management. Even if I have enough, I set priorities. One thing I appreciate with my two daughters is that they never ask for expensive or the latest gadgets, just the basic needs like computer or cellphone and don’t really mind hand-me-downs from me.

Sometimes, a painful situation will wake us up to the role that our vocabulary is playing, as a woman named Caryn discovered. After she was laid off from her engineering job, she started telling people, “I am unemployed.” Caryn desperately searched for a new job, without success. Then she realized that by continually saying that she was unemployed, she was creating that situation. So she stopped using that word, and shortly afterwards, she was offered an engineering position that would pay all of her bills.

I believe that just changing the words I was using with myself and others brought abundance very quickly into my life.

Here are some affirmations that I often say daily.

I am open to receive.
I am open to abundance.

“If I can provide a good future for my children they will look after me during my old age.”

This has been referred by some as “Filipino retirement planning”. Truth is, I have never heard of this practice. My daddy old boy, bless his soul, never gave that impression to us, 7 siblings. Even at his semi-retirement at 55 years old till his death at 73, he supported himself and still left enough income for us even after death. He prepared for his retirement the moment he graduated college.

I am following dad’s plan but I am not as liquid as he once was at my age. I have been busy saving for my kids’ college education and paying off two home mortgages that it’s about time I rebuild my liquidity. Ever since the kids left college, I see myself working even past the age of 70. I don’t have a retirement age. My work is fun. The only factor going against me is my health, the diabetes and my spastic heart condition and that’s the future I am concerned about. I need to save up for contingencies like that.

In “Retirement Planning, Pinoy-Style” written by Randell Tiongson, a financial planner and writer for Money Sense Magazine, a short survey of average middle class Filipinos was done to look into Filipinos’ view towards retirement planning. Most of the respondents prefer to retire earlier than the usual 60 or 65 years old. It seems many do not see themselves working very long and would like to get out of the rat race earlier than most. I think these are the employees and not someone like me who enjoys work at home. Here’s an interesting revelation from that survey. While most wanted to retire early, many of them do not have any retirement program in place. It makes me wonder how serious they are in early retirement. It might just be wishful thinking.

Most agree that they may not have enough money to retire comfortably. As to the best time to start planning, most were unanimous in saying that “the earlier, the better”, from the time one earns income or at least when one hits 30 years old. That’s the practice I am inculcating to my children. Start saving for your retirement today. The best investments for retirement are real estate, time deposits and savings. Few mentioned sophisticated instruments like life insurance, mutual funds, unit investment trust funds, socks, bonds or structured notes. Fortunately, my father exposed me to all these type of investments but on a more conservative approach.

On the reason why retirement planning is not taken seriously, respondents talked about immediate gratification, mañana habit, lack of funds, low income, increasing expenses, wrong priorities, short-term thinking, lack of knowledge. One respondent even added that “Filipinos are not too keen on preparing for their retirement maybe because of what we call the extended family.” Most parents, including myself, are too busy preparing for their children’s future and they tend to forget their old age which brings me back now to the Pinoy-style Retirement Planning.

I cannot imagine my children supporting me in my old age especially if they have families already which is one reason that I stopped giving them financial support once they started work so I could rebuild my savings. My kids often say that they will help us in our old age but I don’t want them to think that is our plan. If they want to give us gifts, well and good. It is not an imposition but more out of love.

I do have a retirement plan and it starts with a goal and an action plan that started in our first year of marriage.

Each of us today, has a financial future. There are few future aspects of my life I can control, but one part I can play is to assist our family’s future is setting goals. I dont have to obsess about my goals. I don’t have to constantly watch and mark our progress toward them. But it is beneficial to think about my goals and write them down. What do I want to happen in our financial future? What financial problems would I like to solve? What bills would I like to be rid of? What would I like to be earning at the end of this year? The end of next year? Five years froom now? Twenty years from now? I know I am willing to work for these goals and trust God to guide me.

Taking responsibility for my retirement plan enables me to take focus off money. It frees me to do my work and live the life I want. I deserve to have the self-esteem and peace that accompanies financial responsibility.

Do you have a retirement plan?

The question isn’t at what age I want to retire, it’s at what income. ~George Foreman——————————-

Creating One Million Pinoy Millionaires by 2020 is a post from: A Filipina Mom Blogger

Follow me in twitter @momblogger.A “Think Rich Pinoy” with a tagline Creating One Million Pinoy Millionaires by 2020 event flashed on my facebook. Clicking the link, I discover it is a Think Rich Pinoy Seminar to be hosted by Larry Gamboa (best selling author of “Think Rich, Pinoy”) at Philamlife, Manila on February 16 and 17. I reserve my judgement on the seminar since I’ve never attended it. The thing is the fee is only Php1,450 pesos which is more affordable than the Make Money Online Seminar that has an entrance fee of Php6000 pesos.

One never can never go wrong in real estate investment. It is a hedge against inflation and a source of passive income. My father, a self-made man, was orphaned during his teens. He survived because his parents left a few coconut lands which gave his five siblings some passive income. More important than acquiring wealth, I learned from my dad the importance of risk-taking, investment and managing personal finances at a young age.

Whether or not one becomes a millionaire has very little to do with the amount of money you make, whether one attends this real estate or the Make Money Online Seminar.

It’s the way that you treat money in your daily life. More than grabbing an income opportunity, these seminars need to remind the participants that it is possible to be a millionaire but it’s just as important to learn how to manage personal finances.

We can learn some of these lessons from this article on 10 possible reasons you aren’t a millionaire:

1. You Care What Your Neighbors Think: If you’re competing against them and their material possessions, you’re wasting your hard-earned money on toys to impress them instead of building your wealth.

2. You Aren’t Patient: Until the era of credit cards, it was difficult to spend more than you had. That is not the case today. If you have credit card debt because you couldn’t wait until you had enough money to purchase something in cash, you are making others wealthy while keeping yourself in debt.

3. You Have Bad Habits: Whether it’s smoking, drinking, gambling or some other bad habit, the habit is using up a lot of money that could go toward building wealth. Most people don’t realize that the cost of their bad habits extends far beyond the immediate cost. Take smoking, for example: It costs a lot more than the pack of cigarettes purchased. It also negatively affects your wealth in the form of higher insurance rates and decreased value of your home.

4. You Have No Goals: It’s difficult to build wealth if you haven’t taken the time to know what you want. If you haven’t set wealth goals, you aren’t likely to attain them. You need to do more than state, “I want to be a millionaire.” You need to take the time to set saving and investing goals on a yearly basis and come up with a plan for how to achieve those goals.

5. You Haven’t Prepared: Bad things happen to the best of people from time to time, and if you haven’t prepared for such a thing to happen to you through insurance, any wealth that you might have built can be gone in an instant.

6. You Try to Make a Quick Buck: For the vast majority of us, wealth doesn’t come instantly. You may believe that people winning the lottery are a dime a dozen, but the truth is you’re far more likely to get struck by lightning than win the lottery. This desire to get rich quickly likely extends into the way you invest, with similar results.

7. You Rely on Others to Take Care of Your Money: You believe that others have more knowledge about money matters, and you rely exclusively on their judgment when deciding where you should invest your money. Unfortunately, most people want to make money themselves, and this is their primary objective when they tell you how to invest your money. Listen to other people’s advice to get new ideas, but in the end you should know enough to make your own investing decisions.

8. You Invest in Things You Don’t Understand: Your hear that Bob has made a lot of money doing it, and you want to get in on the gravy train. If Bob really did make money, he did so because he understood how the investment worked. Throwing in your money because someone else has made money without fully understanding how the investment works will keep you from being wealthy.

9. You’re Financially Afraid: You are so scared of risk that you keep all your money in a savings account that is actually losing money when inflation is put into the equation, yet you refuse to move it to a place where higher rates of return are possible because you’re afraid that you will lose money.

10. You Ignore Your Finances: You take the attitude that if you make enough, the finances will take care of themselves. If you currently have debt, it will somehow resolve itself in the future. Unfortunately, it takes planning to become wealthy. It doesn’t magically happen to the vast majority of people.

Financial responsibility is an attitude. I can be a billionaire but if I am not responsible, I will lose my money in a week’s time. Money goes out to pay necessities and luxuries. Money must come in, in order to go out. How much money needs to come in to equal that which is going out?

Taxes, savings plans, appropriate spending habits that demonstrate an attitude of financial responsibility. Even if we have a contract with someone else to provide for our financial needs, we need to understand the workings of the money earned and spent in our life.

It’s my hope that these “Think Rich” or “Make Money Online” seminars show lessons about financial responsibility so that the “One Million Pinoy Millionaires by 2020″ is not a short lived dream.

Follow me in twitter @momblogger.Ever since I could remember, dad often brought me and my siblings to any [tag]real estate investment[/tag] he acquired. Trudging by the tall weeds and mud, I wrinkled my nose and retort “But there is nothing here. No houses. ” Dad would often chuckle and remind me “Think of the future. what will it be like in 30 years?”. Twirling around the grasses and looking up at the sky, I could not think far ahead to the future. After all, I was just 8 years old. God bless my dad. His [tag]investment[/tag] paved the way for my own [tag]real estate[/tag] investments together with the rest of my siblings. I felt my girls should know how to prioritize their paycheck. Lauren even as a fresh graduate seems to be earning quite well. I thought I’d show her to invest her money wisely. So off we went for a brief stop in our country home somewhere in Sta. Rosa before heading off to Ayala Land’s latest development, the Nuvali.
On the way to Nuvali, we got so engrossed with the landscape that we missed the turn to the entrance. The sign “Poke Your Eyes” alerted us that Hey you are lost. We had a good laugh as we made a u-turn back to Nuvali.

We finally arrived at the Nuvali entrance which was almost right across Sta. Rosa Estates 2. Rolling down the car window, our car traversed the long road toward the rest of the development. I heard myself in Lauren as she commented on There is nothing here but roads and empty space. Of course, I explained that Ayala Land is still in its pre-selling phase because land development is still in progress. I told them Imagine, here will rise the man-made lake, discovery center, the wide roads, the ravines, the biking trails, the eco-friendly living environment perfect for your future family. In 30 years, we might not be alive anymore but you will get to enjoy the sprawling, green community where you can balance urban conveniences with personal relationships and health. I continued to show them the possible landmarks of the future.

Imagine you get to see the bare land now and in at least 3 years, houses will start sprouting left and right.

My brief lecture took a backseat as we gazed at the various bird species flying about the green landscape. As we gazed at the birds in a brief stop at the rotunda, it was the cattles’ turn to stare at us as if beckoning us to stop so they could pass safely. These cattle would have to relocate once humans live in Nuvali’s Treveia and Avida Settings.

The girls are fascinated with the countryside. It’s not often they see goats, the wild birds or cattle. The girls agree that “This is an ideal place to raise family”. I want them to think far ahead and imagine living in Nuvali. Why Nuvali? I ask them. I forsee that Nuvali will offer a lifestyle where it’s focused on life and nature as well as technology and productivity leading to what I hope becomes a haven for their future families. This is just one real estate investment I am showing the girls. There are a lot more worthwhile investments but another trip will need to be scheduled.

I felt it’s important to pave the way now while they are starting out with their careers. It’s a matter of preparing wisely for the future.

Follow me in twitter @momblogger.The green landscape just took my breath away as we drove on to the countryside. The gust of wind sent a shiver down my spine. I love this place, I thought as we inspected the Sta. Rosa property in Laguna. The fresh countryside air is the best gift that I can ever give my family. Three family members are asthma prone and this is the ideal family home for us, as I hugged my husband. The year was January 2000. While my husband and I poured over the layout of the house, Luijoe was a bit distressed to see that he had his own room which I labeled “Luijoe”. He took my pencil and wrote Luijoe in OUR bedroom. “That’s where I am going to sleep”, he showed an impish grin.

Oh well, he is not ready to move to his own room. I looked at my husband.

Luijoe ran to the cul-de sac and romped on the greenery beside the house as it was slowly being constructed. The move to our country home was scheduled for April 2001.

The plan was simple enough. Lauren and Marielle will finish high school somewhere in the south of Manila while Luijoe would study in Don Bosco at Sta. Rosa. When the girls are in college, they will live in dormitories and drive home for a weekend stay in our country home.

Destiny had other plans for us.

When Luijoe died in May of 2000, we totally squashed the expansion plans to just three bedrooms instead of four. I knew Luijoe wanted to have his room with us. The plans to move in was totally shelved. Dazed and confused, we signed the housing loan barely two weeks after his death. The stress of his death, moving to a new home seemed such a formidable task. Besides, the two girls would soon be in college in a few years time. On top of that, I felt that I didn’t see a future with my husband. There was no need to move now to the countryside or to a new home for that matter. I just had no energy to pursue my dream country home with the white picket fence.

You know what happened? The house construction was done in April 2001. For the next 3 years, we did not do anything about our lovely home until we rented it out on April 2004. Despite our grief, we never missed our monthly amortization. I would have expected the place to be run-down or cannibalized but no…Since it was an Ayala Land property, the village association religiously cut the grass and secured the place for us. when we inspected the house 3 years later, we were impressed that the exterior of our house still looked brand-new. As you might know, the adverse weather conditions in the Philippines can totally ruin the house’ facade.

As most of you know, my husband and I had a second wind in our married life and the future seemed bright once again. See, how a positive attitude transforms into positive actions?

We purchased a neo-french inspired house early this year which was nearer the school of the kids and moved in on March 18, 2007. We’re very happy in our new home but my husband is itching and raving about building another house and decorating it. I imagine myself 10 years from now retiring in the countryside and just taking it easy. I will let my husband do the interior-design this time.

So when I was invited to the Press launch of Ayala Land’s Nuvali Evoliving located at Sta. Rosa/Canlubang area, I was extremely excited that this new real estate development could be our future retirement home. “In terms of size, it’s about 8 times the size of the Makati Central Business District, and is roughly an hour away from Makati. The development is well connected but is also the gateway to Region 4 — so we feel that its size and its location will really make NUVALI a metropolis that has strong regional connections,” shares Jim Ayala, President of Ayala Land. I got to be invited as one of Ayala Land’s accredited real estate brokers and that just made me even more enthusiastic about the project.

So guess where my husband and I will invest next?

Check out Why I will Invest and Live in Nuvali. Maybe you might want to be my neighbors?——————————-

Making Money Online is a post from: A Filipina Mom Blogger

Follow me in twitter @momblogger.I make pretty decent income online through Google Adsense, Text Link Ads, Direct Ads and my webhosting. That’s all I know about making money online. I never looked for other ways to earn money online because I don’t want to depend on it as my sole source of income. Because of my last entry on ethical blogging, I discovered that there are other ways of making money online after I googled on a person’s name. Search Engine Results point to sites that promise you home based opportunity.

Here is a sample:

Do you want to get your own internet home business up and running the fastest way even without products of your own? Even without knowledge in writing Sales Letters? Then listen up!

I’ve been online for many years now and I’ve seen hot offers come and go. There are so many chances to make money online, there’s not just one way. There are literally hundreds…

Looks really inviting but why am I wary of such schemes?

The word “fastest” smacks of greediness. Of course, there is nothing wrong with earning the fastest way we can. But as a conservative netrepreneur, I’d rather take the slow but steady route. I also have an issue about focusing my life on money and sacrificing principles.

I cannot afford to allow my focus in life to be money. This will not lead me into the abundance of life that I am seeking. It will not even lead me to financial stability. Yes, money is important. I deserve to be paid what I’m worth. I will be paid what I am worth for when I believe I deserve to be. Often most plans fail when the primary consideration is money.

I have learned that when I am true to myself about work and what I need to be doing, the money will follow. Money is a consideration but it cannot be our primary consideration if we are seeking spiritual security and peace of mind.

——————————-

Follow me in twitter @momblogger.Do you believe in luck and chance especially in financial success? When our only son was born in 1993, our life changed dramatically. My husband and I believed that our son was our lucky charm which brought us good fortune and lots of happiness. In fact, among all the kids, Luijoe had the grandest Baptismal celebration and even birthday parties. Our family was indeed blessed. We could not ask for more. When we dabbled in stock trading, I had no knowledge on how the financial markets worked. My husband got a hold of Initial Public Offering (IPO) of large companies in the early 90′s. The booming stock market and rising price indexes drove me to sell when it was high. It was bullish period in the stock market trading.

And how did I determine the time to sell?

I rubbed Luijoe’s hair like one would rub Aladdin’s magical lamp and I’d whisper to Luijoe ” do you think mama should sell?”

If Luijoe smiled to his right that meant “yes” and the opposite is “No”. What a silly way to sell?

Each of our financial decisions on our investments were based on gut feel and caressing my son’s hair for good luck. Come to think of it, our financial success was probably based on faith and a positive focus on our financial affairs during those years. See, what happened after Luijoe died?

We lost focus. We had no direction. It took great effort to make important decisions. Slowly, our financial situation deterriorated until the time our family turned towards a positive resolution of our grief. Since I didn’t have a son for good luck, I turned to Jesus and lifted my worries to HIM . Doors of opportunity opened and we reaped wonderful blessings from these as walked in faith and trust.

An opportunity to invest in the stock market greeted me once again with an invitation from Ely (through Gwen Nava) to bloggers for the launch of the Absolute Traders. The invite was a formal launch of this wonderful community of stock traders with the theme “Absolute Change”, which will signal the pardigm shift in the way the public perceives the financial markets.

Now this is definitely something I look forward to. I don’t intend to be a stock broker or anything but I ‘d like to possess technical skills in analyzing the financial markets. Their group hopes to educate an investing public to use technical analysis in their trading and to go beyond tips and rumors. Even the founder, Bonner Dytoc said that “in order to trade, they don’t need to dwell too much on the financial numbers, they just need to know when is the proper time to enter and to exit”.

Not like me huh? I basically relied on gut feelings and luck. I hope to start their seminar “Basic Technical Analysis for the Financial Market” soon . Fortunately , it’s easy to buy stocks now as one can buy through an online stock broker such as CitisecOnline or PhilStock. How very convenient for me who spends a lot of time online.

Just you now, Atty Francisco Ed Lim, President and CEO of the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) mentioned in his message that ” the market is on a roll. The PSE which is the main barometer of local stock price movements expanded by 42.3 % in 2006, by 15% in 2005 , by 26.4% in 2004 and by 41 % in 2003. So far this year, the PSEi has reached levels never before enjoyed by investors in the 80 year history of our stock market. ”

Now is the time to be an well-informed investor instead of relying on my old methods.

Follow me in twitter @momblogger.What does being broke mean? Does it mean being down to the last million peso? or down to the last 100,000 pesos or the last 1,000 pesos? There was a time, we only had 1,000 pesos in our savings/checking account way below the minimum bank requirement. We even had a negative balance due to a service fee charge for dropping below the minimum. Our saving grace was Lauren who had savings which we borrowed to keep us afloat. In the strictest sense of the word, our financial situation was not entirely hopeless. We were not bankrupt but we were not liquid either. Though we had other assets, it took time to convert them to cash. Though in the red, we didn’t incur credit card debts, renege on our mortagage or borrowed from the bank. These financial challenges a few years ago inspired me to be more responsive to income opportunities. I grew up in financially secure family because my father was hardworking with an astute sense of financial responsibility. We were blessed with a family bakery business and a father who invested his earnings wisely . Despite his illness, and unable to work since his stroke at the age of 55 years old, dad had enough money to last him till his death at age 71.

Not that my husband and I were financially incompetent. With a thriving law office , the financial future looked great. Butch brought in most of the income while I stayed at home and puttered on my hobbies. I felt like a queen being pampered by my King. In the past, I often turned down a lot of projects or refused commissions because I wanted the other party to benefit more than I did. I felt guilty over my earnings. Then the financial crisis hit us like a rock. Stress and hopelessness in our life drove us to be a bit more complacent. We lost focus on our financial affairs. Too bad my king faltered. I had to wake up from my queenly slumber and grab opportunities as they came before we went totally bankrupt.

The past certainly brought me lessons:

It was okay to profit.

It was alright to make an honest living.

It was good to save up enough for a rainy day.

I need not feel guilty if I earn.

It’s great to offer quality services at affordable prices.

It is wise to diversify sources of income.

Set Goals.

Do my best ,today, to take responsibility for my finances.

Believe you deserve the best, financially.

Believe God cares about your finances.

Let go of your fear and TRUST.

Let go of money and concentrate on Living.

So what does my entry “[tag]Cheap Travel Fares Online[/tag]” have to do with all these? I sound like one of those crazy spam words.

A few weeks ago, Lorna, my generous sister ( how I love my siblings) offered a travel booking engine for me to place on my high traffic sites. Her words ” Possibly the cheapest internet airfares to the Philippines and Beyond Asia!” She persuaded me that her “consolidator (a.k.a. wholesaler) provides me with an incredible support system. I consider their company as the best in the planet! (I’m biased, of course).” What was there to lose? All I needed was to paste the code in a static page and link it to my Photo Gallery where most of our travel photos are posted .

I added the code and began optimizing the site in preparation for the launch. I wasn’t ready to promote it yet since the web design is still being finalized. I was surprised to get my first booking a few days ago. Wow, so people do shop for travel fares online and compare rates. One receives an eticket and brings it together with a valid ID to the airport. I am quite impressed. The only eticket I’ve ever used are local flights within the USA and Philippines .

So yeah, presenting a preview of my Booking Engine Site

Borrowing the words of my sister,

Being a believer in “Truth in Advertising,” compare my [tag]travel fares[/tag]. Check these websites and compare the travel fares.

Expedia-expedia.com

Travelocity- travelocity.com

Cheap Tickets- cheaptickets.com

My sister and I did travel rates comparison and found out that we are both offering Cheap Plane tickets online. What a great service, I thought.

And so diversifying my online business is just one of my goals towards financial independence. Another online deal is in the pipeline. A brick and mortar business is in its planning stage with the help of my dear husband.

Taking responsibility for our financial affairs does not mean making money our focus. Taking responsibility for our finances enables us take our focus off money. It frees us to do work and live the life we want.——————————-
