Cats are friend or food?

Should cat-loving countries impose their cultural values on cat-eating societies?

I just watched an exclusive report on ABS CBN on how cats are being purchased for cat meat or cat fur trade. Apparently, a Vietnamese boat is docked at the Cebu pier for over 2 weeks now. The boat is here to unload rice imports but they have another agenda. They want to buy cats.

The Philippines’ Animal Welfare Act or Republic Act No. 8485 states that:

It shall be unlawful for any person to torture any animal, to neglect to provide adequate care, sustenance or shelter, or maltreat any animal or to subject any dog or horse to dogfights or horsefights, kill or cause or procure to be tortured or deprived of adequate care, sustenance or shelter, or maltreat or use the same in research or experiments not expressly authorized by the Committee on Animal Welfare.

The concept of cat-eating cuisine is disgusting to me but cats are a legitimate food source in some South East Asian countries like China and Vietnam. So to that question , I respect cultural values on cat-eating societies but these countries should follow our laws on our animal welfare.

Why don’t they just grow a cat farm in their countries?

The report revealed that the Philippines is the highest trader of cat and dog fur. Philippine pet-flesh trade is not something to be proud about.

See, I’m such a pet lover.

  1. I couldn’t imagine my cats as food. Why is this happening? Aren’t there enough livestock to supply their needs? And we (the Philippines) joined the bandwagon? Somethings terribly wrong.

  3. You can’t assume that every criticisms of Filipino culture or any culture is ethnocentrism of cat loving countries imposing their culture and values on other countries. That could dangerously lead to a anything goes mentality where things like cannibalism, racial discrimination, and sexism would be also acceptable as long as people claim it’s part of their culture. Culture is evil, it reinforces racial divisions, blacks and latinos use it for political power and will turn against blacks and latinos who disagree with them. I’m sick of people saying how great culture is. Culture is a tool for oppression like nazism and communism, it encourages dictatorships and hypocrisy. I pray to Jesus that he can save me from the corruption and influences of culture.

  5. For me, cat is always a friend and never will be food. I can’t even imagine eating my cat, that’s so unlawful and merciless doing but in other places they enjoy eating them. Well, I hope someday they’ll realize that cats are friend and should be love and be treated good.
