Charice Pempengco in Oprah Winfrey Show (Full version)
I’ve changed my mind. When I first heard Charice Pempengco in the Ellen Degeneres show, I wasn’t too impressed with the “birit” style. Though quite awesome, her lung-busting vocal skills are simply not my type of singing.
Today, my sister Lorna sent me the Full version of Charice Pempengco who sang “I Have Nothing” in the Oprah Winfrey’s World’s Smartest Kids and I am so bowled over. Charice literally blew them away. The audience gave her a standing ovation before the song even ended.
Her singing is so much improved. I used to get distracted with the “birit” style but this time, her tone was just simply amazing. It must have been the pain in the past that brought out all these emotions during her singing. Charice has known pain and sadness since her parents separated when she was just a little girl. It was, by her mother Raquel’s account, a parting preceded by heart-breaking incidents that Charice witnessed .
Fortunately, mother and daughter resolved to leave it all behind and move on. It was not easy, but the way things have turned out is a testament to the power of faith and the will to succeed.
If you watch the video till the end, Oprah says it sounds like Charice is pulling her voice from somewhere deep in her body. “What a blow-away moment!”
Oprah says she first heard about Charice from producer/songwriter David Foster. “He says you’re a force to be reckoned with.”
For Charice, singing on Oprah’s stage is a dream come true. “I can’t believe I’m here standing with you,” she says. “I can’t believe I’m hugging you!”
I am amazed at how YouTube (through Dave Dueñas, a.k.a. FalseVoice on the YouTube) paved the way to her dreams which brought her to Sweden then the USA, Korea, and the UK.
This girl is going places.
Go Charice. It’s good you gave yourself credit for your success with the support of your mom, friends and fans. We’re proud of you too.
I have seen Charice since her 1st TV appearance at MTB(Magandang Tanghali Bayan) wherein she imitates Whitney Houston, She was my favorite. She is reaaaaallllyyy GOOD for her age.

I don’t know if it’s just me but whenever she performs locally it seems she’s imitating someone (like some of her mannerisms and the voice are similar to Yeng Constantino and Sarah Geronimo) . I hate to sound like I’m bringing her down or something but that’s just me. And I think she should start promoting her original songs more than doing covers. 🙂

@Jeric- you are not putting her down. I agree with you that she needs to develop her own style soon and sing original songs. Sometimes I think she is adored because of her young age. What happens when she is older? I know she should take advantage of her celebrity status now and close deals but she also needs to think of her future.
ohh, i cried listening to her sing. it was a dream come true for her to be on Oprah’s show. maybe the reason why she is singing these big powerful songs of Whitney Houston, Jennifer Hudson, etc, is to showcase her voice to the whole world. but, i agree that she should develop her own singing identity like Leona Lewis.

I agree with Jeric. Para kong nakikita ang younger version ni Yeng whenever she performs…
But in fairness, Charice has improved talaga, kaso lang minsan super arte na nya magsalita or is it just me getting irritated kasi nagmumukha na syang TH pag nag-e-English.
But then again, magaling talaga sya, at dahil bata pa malayo pa ang mararating nya…

@mitch- I guess she is trying hard to speak in American English and it comes out trying hard. She will learn if she is exposed to hearing it everyday.
