Facebook Message From Thailand, Amway and Astoria Hotel

If you are a facebook user and living in the Philippines, you might have received this message last month

My name is _______, I am a Thai-Chinese born and living in Bangkok, Thailand. I am now starting to expand my business branch to the Philippine market.

I am looking and searching for anyone who desires to work for or do business with Thailand, USA and virtually anywhere in Far East Asia and Europe. About the investment, there’d be no worry, since we have set up working environment facilities in Ortigas already.

There’re so many opportunities to create a future with us in the Philippines, the income opportunity here is endless.

I do not know much of any contact there, so I wish God and Facebook would help me connect with someone who have this unique and identical interest.

Our business will need a lot of travelings, mostly to the US, Europe and the Far East. Since we are an outsourced company, most trips are provided without personal expenses.
But the person must be able to speak good English with an entrepreneurship minded 🙂

I’d be glad to set up an appointment with you to discuss further details when I am in Manila next month in May 2009.

Thank you so much for taking your time with my message. If you have an interest to learn more about this. Just add me, and drop me a message!

I will be living in Ortigas Center Area, Pasig City, Metro Manila at Astoria Plaza Hotel.

Maraming Salamat Po! Hope to hear from you! 🙂

God bless you!

Well, I did reply to ask what this mystery was all about. And he said this:

We are Alternative Outsourced Distribution Channels Company. We build distributors bases worldwide and collect royalties from using and utilizing our bases of consumers and distributors.

I didn’t go but guess what?

Azrael went and it was AMWAY. Well, if you don’t know Amway, Wiki’s definition ” is a direct selling company that uses multi-level marketing or network marketing to promote its products.” It was a total waste of time for Azrael. Amway is known for excellent products. I used their Nutrilite dietary supplements, Artistry makeup and biodegradable detergents. In the mid-nineties, I attended one of their network meetings. It is not exactly a pyramid scam because the group breaks away once you reach 50 distributors, if my memory serves me right. Not everyone is cut out for multi-level marketing or networking sales. Some critics even call it a pyramid scam.

My beef against this approach is that the Thai Amway distributor was not upfront. He beat around the bush just so you’d be curious enough to attend the meeting. It now became a waste of time if it is not your kind of business. Next time, you receive a mysterious invite, ask the name of the service/product first and not just high-falluting description. Disclosure, disclosure, disclosure, please!

If Amway is your cup of tea, join by all means. I know three Amway distributors who have been successful in their networking efforts. I’d rather stick to being a consumer because I don’t have the time to network and sell.

Note: A variation of this is a message from Koreans

  1. By the way, just want to mention that Ortigas is now plagued by these direct selling companies. I used to get an hour and a half of peaceful time lunching late at a fastfood on Emerald, now it’s full of these noisy people who don’t even order.

  2. I love Amway products especially the Nutrilite vitamins and the detergent for sensitive skin. Been buying their products for 15 years or so. But I wouldn’t want to be a network marketing consultant (is that what they call it these days?) I think the best way to recruit is to make customers enthusiastic about the products and then invite them to try the business themselves. Fooling them into a meeting is definitely a turn-off and unprofessional. My Amway distributor is very professional and wonderful!

  3. the message they sent is totally different. I thought it was a art design company looking for networks here, which i got interest to go, since its my field in digital arts and design.

but they are good people that has been pushed to the limits in expanding their downline members. and target our country to help do business.

its a good business, but that kind of style of networking in business is not for me.

Azraels last blog post..Transformers 2 Revenge of the Fallen news – listen to LINKIN PARK "New Divide" song

  4. The name of the company isn’t usually given because a lot of people have preconceived notions, I too am a network builder and based on experience, getting the right information first from the functions makes all the difference, but that’s just me.

  5. The same to sourceforge.net. Well, it is not like facebook, it is a software directory and I participated there by uploading my written PHP scripts (your blog WordPress is in PHP). Sometimes I receive surveys requests from companies or institutions which used my sf.net email address to contact me. So there is a good high possibility that I can just switch them off by killing my email address there.

I think already about that. And maybe I will do.

So what I want to give you is an advice, simply DO NEVER expose your real, personal email address to internet. Package it in an image with decors, like I do on my homepage – click “Impressum”, that is Imprint in english to see my example. And use different email addresses with such “social networks”. You can get on many places free aliases for your email. Or doesn’t support your hoster where your blog is hosted on, email aliases?
