Forty is the old age of youth; fifty the youth of old age

Aging is not lost youth but a new stage of opportunity and strength. Betty Friedan

It is my usual routine to show my husband the photos of media events that I attend. Lying comfortably on our beds, I placed the macbook on my tummy and showed my husband the photo above taken by Carlo Ople when we attended the Blackberry 7 launch at Ayala Museum.

I just had to laugh at the following conversation:

Husband: Why do you look so young there?

My husband is two years younger than me and I was always conscious that I would look older than him. For a long time, he wore a moustache to make himself look older than me. Anyway, back to our conversation.

Me: It’s the way I smile that makes me look younger.

I gleam a smile to my husband but he wore this silly expression as if worried what people would say.

Husband: People will think that you did something to your face.

Me: hah. Plastic surgery? They can easily examine me closely and see that I have lines on my face.

Husband: Unfair.

Me: Well, I can’t help if I got smiling genes from my dad! I can’t smile without showing my teeth. That is just how I am.

I then showed a photo of my dad when he was 51 years old.

See?

Husband: Unfair.

I caressed his silvery gray hair and while holding his hand close to my face, I gave him some words of comfort. See, my dear “..everyone is the age of their heart.”
