Lesson Learned from Shoes Thrown at President Bush

Most of you have already seen the video above when an Iraqi journalist throws shoes at Bush in Baghdad and where President Bush shrugs it off:

“So what if the guy threw his shoe at me?” Bush told a reporter in response to a question about the incident.

“Let me talk about the guy throwing his shoe. It’s one way to gain attention. It’s like going to a political rally and having people yell at you. It’s like driving down the street and having people not gesturing with all five fingers. …

Aside from increasing security measures to include shoes as deadly weapon, what have you learned or affirmed here?

The Shoe attack on Bush reminds me of some people I know throwing ad-hominem attacks. There will always be trolls, troublemakers, bullies and attention-seekers in real life or cyberspace. Reality is, not everyone will like you. The more high profile you are, the more the criticisms. The more successful you are, the more some people will want to see you fail.

There are more important issues to attend to than focus on the shoe attack.

Like Bush, the attitude I will take is “so what if they throw shoes at me?” and then, I will just laugh it off.

  1. My classmates and I are sold that the journalist should have just thrown his shoe at Bush instead of yelling first. Imagine what would it be like if the shoe really hit Bush? LOLZ

I’d say, the journalist’s shoe-throwing, however ‘inappropriate’ it may be, is one of the most concrete expression of the Iraqi people’s sentiment about the US and its occupation of their homeland.

jhays last blog post..What’s the future of the Internet?

  2. A recent attack on the Italian president actually reminded me of this, so I went back to find the clip and I must say that I really regret Bush got warned prior to the shoe being able to really hit him as well.
