Dear Mr. Pangilinan:

This is with regard to the 12 March 2011 episode of your show “Willing Willie”, which was brought to my attention by several concerned citizens and groups. In the said episode, a six year-old boy named Jan-Jan Estrada was made to repeatedly perform dance moves usually done by adult dancers in indecent shows. The poor child was in tears and looked scared the entire time, as show host Willie Revillame poked fun at him and the audience laughed and cheered.

Under Republic Act No.7610, also known as “Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act”, the term “child abuse” includes the following acts: “psychological and physical abuse, neglect, cruelty, sexual abuse and emotional maltreatment,” and “any act by deeds or words which debases, degrades or demeans the intrinsic worth and dignity of the child as a human being.”

Given that definition, it is unmistakable that what happened last 12 March 2011 to Jan-Jan Estrada was child abuse.

Persuading a little child to dance sexy adult dances in exchange for a measly sum, while he is being laughed at and ridiculed will definitely traumatize the child. What kind of values are we teaching our children through these shows, especially after Willie Revillame pushed Jan-Jan to do something against his will and then told him that it’s alright because he will receive money in exchange for it?

Given the foregoing, I am requesting that:

(1) Young children not be allowed to appear in Willing Willie and other similar shows in the network that cashes in on poverty;

(2) Host Willie Revillame be rebuked for his insensitive and deplorable actions.

There are limits to children appearing on television, and clearly, your 12 March 2011 episode did not respect the rights of the child and traumatized the six year-old boy. I also wish to raise my concern that the show tends to cash in on the plight of the poor. There are other ways of helping the poor without having to degrade their dignity and earn money out of it.

I hope you can act on this swiftly and I would appreciate a response from your good office.

    I have seen the 12 March episode of Willing Willie and it never occurred to me that the child was being abused during that time… just so you know, the child was not in tears nor scared because he was made to dance… he was in tears and looked scared because of the big guy Bonel Balingit… the sad facial expression was part of his talent… please lang po… instead of accusing Willie with child abuse thing, why don’t we just extend our hands to help these poor people.

    hopefully this letter won’t be put to waste and necessary actions should be done. I’m a mother as well, and I certainly do not accept this kind of mistreatment to children.

    ma’am chx hindi po isyu dito kung gusto o hindi ng bata ang ginagawa niya. anim na taong gulang lang po yung bata at hindi po natin alam kung ano magiging epekto nito sa kanya gayong napapaligiran siya ng mga taong nagtatawanan, sasabayan pa ni willie ng comment na “ganyan ho kahirap ang buhay”. pinaulit pa sa bata yung sayaw. hindi po natin kailangang maging eksperto sa child psychology para masabi natin na may mali sa nangyari. salamat po.

    Everyone has a point in the issue, but why are we focusing on this too much.
    There are so many issues we have to face right now. Yeah! Willie was wrong, but instead of making it as a BIG ISSUE why not settle it closed door. Move on! Don’t let many poor people lose hope once again. Let’s face the reality that Willie’s show delivers a lot of smile to every Filipino. So, why do we have to sacrifice the people’s happiness for the sake of this small mistakes done.

    hmm.. hindi po ba ito mabilis na pag jump sa conclusions?? kasi di ba dun sa episode na yun.. ung bata hindi automatic na nag sasayaw pag nag play ung music nya… at hindi si willie ang nagsabi na ganun ang sayawin nya.. if i remember correctly, it was his relatives that taught him to do this talent. and besides, willie did not lure the child of money para gawin yun… automatic siya… at saka… isn’t going to far para sabihin na child abuse yon??.. i think na wala naman nangyaring maltreatment dun.. willie just played the music.. and like what i said.. automatic sya..

    and besides, maraming natutulungan ang programang ito.. and i’ve never seen him degrade a person’s dignity before niya bigyan ito ng pera.. yun lang.. opinion ko lng naman to..

    I bet isa ka din dun sa mga na entertain at tumawa habang pinapanood yung bata. Are you a mom? Hindi mo naman siguro ipapagawa yan sa anak mo, hindi ba? At paano kung nanay ka nung bata? Habang pinaglalaruan sya ni Willie Revillame, sinasamahan pa ng mga halakhak ng madla habang gumigiling yung anak mo na paluha na? Hindi ba masakit yun para sa isang ina?

    OK. I will admit that as of this writing, I have yet to see the video. That said, when a child cries – for whatever reason – it is usually taken as a sign of distress, is it not?

    It is then the responsibility of the adults around the child to uncover the source of the distress, and remove the child from it as soon as it can be managed. To ridicule, tease, or otherwise contribute to a situation that upsets/frightens the child only contributes to the general aggravation of both the child and anyone whose protective instincts/indignation/outrage are triggered by the sight.

    Sadly, I notice that the “but it’s all in good fun”, “it was just a joke” line is often invoked to excuse the kind of bullying/abusive/thoughtless behavior that hurts people. The worst part is not being able to retaliate, because, after all, “I was only joking, dear!”
