Trillanes and Lim Camped at Manila Peninsula & Curfew

11:45 AM– Trillanes and Lim Stage a Coup in Makati? As usual, I first heard of the breaking news , the “coup” from a Twitter message by Arbet

“Something is brewing at Makati involving Magdalo.”

This was followed by Ederic’s twit on Trillanes and Lim Walk out of Court Hearing.

Too busy with work or in denial, I ignored the news until my husband called up a few minutes ago. He said “Turn on the TV and check if there is a coup”. So here I am blogging and watching the ANC Channel who are covering the breaking news. I switch to twitter and catch Ederic’s twitter on the Panawagan sa Bayan Ng “mga miyembro ng Armed Forces of the Philippines” is in Tagalog so I am still trying to decipher their demands.

From what I gather in the news, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and his supporters are appealing…

“Ito po ay panawagan ng pagbabago. Ang naniniwala po na dapat tayo makaahon sa kahirapan, pumunta na po kayo sa Makati (This is a call for change. All those who believe that we should rise from poverty, join us and come here in Makati),” Trillanes told GMA News.

Trillanes is so “original”. After Oakwood Hotel, he latches on to Manila Peninsula where they are setting up a command center on the second floor. I don’t wonder anymore why anyone voted for Trillanes. I mean, wow… how noble he is to bring us out of poverty. Maybe my tolerance for pain is quite high even if I sympathize with the poor, but another coup attempt from Trillanes smacks of power hungry motives. Besides does a five star hotel and poverty mix well? Two Bishops, Former Vice President Teofisto Guingona and some civilians are some of the first supporters to join Trillanes in the hotel.

This latest coup attempt looks like it was planned beforehand. Look at their Sundalo Tagapagtanggol ng Pilipino website.

Oh dear, are they now planning a People Power Part 3? or is it Part 4?

6:19 PM Trillanes agrees to leave hotel . I’m watching the news live in News Patrol. A group of policemen escorts a handcuffed Trillanes inside a high security bus followed by ex-VP Guingona and others including media. The Technical crew of ABS-CBN are handcuffed. Wow. And is that bus inside a hotel lobby? Manila Peninsula must be in a sorry mess right now. I just don’t understand why the media men are handcuffed.

7:00PM– Reason that Media had to be processed. Police had earlier said they were taking the journalists who covered the standoff from inside the hotel to the National Capital Region Police Office in Bicutan for questioning.

7:09PM Curfew from 12 midnight to 5:00 AM. The curfew was issued “to allow law enforcement agencies to continue their follow-up operation.” The imposition of the curfew reminds me of my life during the Martial Law days. But the curfew freaked my daughter out. She cries “It’s totally destroying my social life” after I forbid her from going out for her band practice.

8:00 PM– I am glad that the Trillanes revolt was crushed. At least 101 persons were arrested inside the hotel , Philippine National Police Director General Avelino Razon said. You know, whatever the government does, their actions will be criticized. At least, the revolt didn’t last for days. Remember the coup in November 29, 1989? It lasted for 10 days because Cebu military refused to give up.

Who doesn’t want poverty to be eradicated? Who doesn’t want a government for the people, free from scandal and corruption? We have tried People Power but did it work? I can only do my share by teaching my children the proper moral values for being a good citizen of our country. Let’s start change in our family, our values and our attitudes.

  1. Do you think Trillanes and Lim will allow themselves to be re-arrested? Wouldn’t that be a disgrace?

I find this incident a bit comedic already. You have to wonder, it’s a long walk from the Makati City Hall to the Manila Peninsula and no forces loyal to the government have bothered to arrest Trillanes and company. Shouldn’t that go without saying, especially since they are detainees? Kelangan pa ng order.

    This is getting really ridiculous.

  2. Filipinos need people like Trillanes who will stand up for the right and for the poor…
Some say he’s just doing it for power motives, who doesn’t? Almost all the people in the government, politicians, they are all for money and power…

The problem with most filipinos is we always want “Ala n ba silang ibang gawing tama kesa mag-rally at mag-aklas..”
how can we move on kung patuloy nting inuulit ulit ang mga pagkakamali..at patuloy nating hahayaan ang mga GANID na mamayani…

Tama si Gen. Lim the power and the sovereinty emanates from the people at hnd kay Arroyo..

Now I ask you, maganda ba ang katayuan ng Pilipinas ngaun?

  3. actually tama lang ginawa nya you know why. . sa tingin mo may magagawa pagkasenador nya kung kalaban nya presidente?? i dont think so tayo nga bumoto kay arroyo ang nagbigay ng power ni arroyo walang magaw sa kalokohan ng gobyerno. . .look at what happened with the pardon of erap pinaghirapan natin yun tapos pinardon may nagawa tayo?? wala. . .at least sya may ginawa eh tayo?
nakakaawa mga sundalo natin actually wala sila kakiyem kieyeme ipagtanggol tayo pero ano na ba nagawa nating mamayan to help or to repay them?

Sino ba yun ex army din na naghostage sa may tower ng airport? kita nyo yun he was surrendering rinig na rinig sa buong pilipinas habang binabaril sya but they kept killing him kse gusto ng arroyo na yan na walang makikialam sa pangungurakot ng asawa nya.

Hay i love my country but im a coward like you. I admire trillanes i hope someone or the entire country hears him.

got this from their site :

Reason tells us that we must not waste our time waiting in vain for promises of felicity that ill never come, that will never materialize. Reason tells us that we must rely upon ourselves alone and never entrust our rights and our life to anyone else. Reason teaches us top be united in sentiment, thought and purpose, so that we may acquire the strength necessary to crush the evil that is affecting our people…

Therefore, o my countrymen! Let us scatter the mist that befogs our intellect, and let us consecrate all our strength to the good cause, with unshakable and absolute faith in its success, and in the ultimate prosperity, so anxiously desired by us, of the land of our birth.”

    Gat Andres Bonifacio

  4. Crazy we may sound but we love our country. Sana di kayo makaramdam ng gutom dahil sa corruption at pagkawala ng mahal sa buhay because of abused power para lng mainitindihan hinaing ng mga pilipino.

  5. Hi Noemi, nakakasawa na talagang pakinggan lahat ng corruption ng GMA administration to think kaliwat kanan puro kahirapan makikita sa country natin…I really admire Gen. Danny Lim (he’s our Ninong) but, hirap lagay nila if they can’t get other generals to join them and the masses…Sayang lahat ng efforts nila.

  6. @Rowena- Very little support is useless. It shows that it’s worth fighting for which means the issues are not critical enough to reach coup status unlike the Marcos’ dictatorial regime.

Rhea you are entitled to your opinions. Unfortunately, you are a sad minority.

  7. i know 🙁 i just hope walang mangyari mas grabe para lng matauhan tyo. . i lalways hear kse go vote to make a difference pero ngayon voting can be manipulated na din. Grabe i don’t want another edsa din pero sa tingin nyo po are we really ok with gloria as president ? Grabe may warrant of arrest na. Thanks for your blog entry ms. noemi it was nice reading din the views of other filipinos.

  8. whether they’re doing the right thing or not, they will not get the support of the masses. nakakasawa na rin kasi. maraming beses na nangyari pero walang improvement. let’s try other ways of solving our country’s problems.

  9. @coimccracken

the only solution i can think of right now is for me to work abroad. di na ko maapektuhan ng corruption sa pinas… karamihan ng pinoy naman e tinatanggap nalang kung ano ang ibigay at gawin ng gobyerno, wala na kong makitang pag-asa sa pilipinas.

  11. Poverty and Manila Pen don’t mix. It’s hard to reconcile their call for the masses to support their cause and their decision to hole up in a posh hotel. What is it with Trillanes and hotels anyway?

I think our country needs change but this is getting ridiculous.

  13. i think trillanes is a noble man, albeit a bit too simple-minded and naive. he really thinks he can change the world by sheer will power alone. its sad that those who sympathize with his sentiments seem to be content to sit safe at the other side of the t.v. screen and watch the events unfold.

frustrated din ako sa glaring corruption of our present administration, but what other choice do we have? the opposition is fragmented, and most are focused on their self-interest. if GMA gets toppled, who will rise up to take up the reigns? i agree with noemi, it would seem that the events are not critical enough to warrant change, or maybe the people have become apathetic and don’t care either way.

  14. @elmer valenzuela…

pure stupidity indeed. oh, funny how you say “hobby” lang nya mag coup.
i guess he can’t do anything else, he would look better as a “rebel in mindanao” rather than being a “prisoned” senator.

we can only hope it won’t get worse than this.

  15. @Rhea – great to know your views too

@coimccracken- people are tired of people power. it’s so old

@Nikki- quite absurd using a hotel for a standoff. Such hypocrisy.

@elmer- hobby haha. I mean you’re right. Wonder what he’ll do the third time?

@cebukitty- maybe apathy. What I believe is the people just aren’t in the mood for “gulo”

@daddynator- found the hobby funny too. Let’s hope peace reign.

  16. What bothers me about Trillanes is how good he is in manipulating the public. For the people? If he is what he claims to be, why does he have to seize hotels? Hotels are located in public areas where there are many civilians. I remember in the Oakwood mutiny, he and his minions planted bombs around the area. Would a sane politician risk public safety? Trillanes is indeed TRAPO, just like the people he detest. This makes me think. Is he really for change or does he want to gain power? I think he latter. He want to convert the Philippines into a second Myanmar/Burma. He obviously is using civilians as a potential human shield. Of course, it is expected that he will surrended — he needs the sympathy of the public. If he didn’t surrender, his image will be tarnished for allowing the media people to be human shield. If he really is SINCERE with his words, why in the first place did he seize a HOTEL? He could have invaded Malacanang, Cam Aguinaldo, Camp Crame, PMA.

Does he really have to take over a hotel? He could have just seized the court room instead. The next thing we know, he seizes a Church.

If we will allow people like him to ‘lead’ us kuno, then they should not wonder why many become politically apathetic. It’s evil vs evil. Not Good vs. evil. And neither of them are less evil. They’re equally evil.

He should just join the MILF or Abu Sayyaf.

Lee Kwan Yew might be really shaking his head now and have totally lost hope in our talented country.

Rhea, how sure are you that when Trillianes dethrowns Arroyo, the Philippines will be a better place to live in. Did the overthrowing of Marcos, the coups during the Cory Admin, the ouster of Erap, the coups in Arroyo time made the Philippines a better place. WHen we ousted Marcos, nothing has changed. We just had a lady president who massacred farmers at Mediola(not realy being different fro Marcos), when we ousted Erap, was corruption put to stop? Whe nwe ousted Erap, we in herited a worse personality than him. If we allow coup plotters, we might end up being a second Myanmar/Burma – ruled by military junta.

There mus the a hidden agenda. Pangalan pa lang.

Like Aguinaldo, Trillanes must be lusting for power.

  18. Nikki is right. Why go to Manila Pen? Previously it was Oakwood. If Trillanes were sincere in his fight for the cause of the masses he should rally out in the open and not hide behind the comforts of a five star hotel. Tsk tsk.

Trillanes may have the right intentions but he sure has a stupid way of showing it. He will never be successful in his fight against GMA if he keeps this up. And that is so sad because a lot of people voted for him. Oh well.

  20. For mocking:

  23. Re: curfew and arrest of media people.

I think the PNP, and this admin, has over-reacted to the whole Trillanes fiasco. I noticed that unlike the time noong oakwood, the government didn’t send any neutral civilian negotiators to try to convince Trillanes first, they just gave him a deadline and nilusob kaagad ang Manila Pen, with no care to the safety of life and property.

And afterwards instead of just arresting Trillanes and his cohorts, pati media people sinama na. Ang pait pa, before these people were arrested, they were not even given their Miranda rights. They were just herded like cattle sa bus and their videos and cameras confiscated. The PNP argued that it was a crime scene and they didn’t know who was part of Trillanes group and who were the media people, so they just hauled everybody and “processed” them sa camps. Ang unforgivable dun eh they ARE PNP. They’re supposed to know kung ano mga legal rights an accused is entitled to under the constitution.

And to make it worse, they imposed a curfew. Curfew? That can only be imposed kung may martial law. And some people were even arrested dahil sinabi nila that they didn’t know about the curfew and ang sagot naman ng PNP — “ignorance of the law excuses no one” Ano ba yan?! Law ba ang curfew? Violation nga yan of our constitutional right to travel! Dapat ang mga PNP should be cited for gross ignorance of the law!

But of course the people will let it slide again, kasi we just don’t care unless the events affect us directly! Do we really have to wait until the critical moment until we decide na sobra na? I respect the rule of law, but I just can’t in good conscience blame Trillanes for what he did. I understand his frustrations all too well.

It would have been different if GMA allowed herself to go through the impeachment process so that all the grievances heaped on her admin will be aired — to prove that no one is above the law and to assuage the people that the rule of law still operates in the Philippines. But instead her admin is twisting the law to their advantage para hindi ma impeach, thus giving rise to people like Trillanes.

  24. @mocking, applesH- that’s what I thought too. A hotel is not the place to start a revolt. That’s why I didn’t think they were sincere even though they had well meaning intentions

@mae- our government has the right to protect the greater majority of the people who are not for this “revolt” . I , as a citizen of the country expect peace and order. I agree that our government has so many evils but I prefer not to use the Trillanes way. I continue to seek other ways to improve our government. I still don’t have any ideas on my mind. Neither has Trillanes. He is all talk. What about you? Have any ideas?

@mae- yes they might have over-reacted but I actually welcomed the curfew to prevent more opportunists to take advantage of the situation.

We are all frustrated but I wouldn’t back Trillanes for his actions. I’m looking for other sane options.

  25. IN AN INTERNATIONAL SEX SURVEY DONE LAST YEAR, IT WAS SHOWN THAT THE PHILIPPINES HAS THE LOWEST RATE OF PREFERENCE FOR B.D.S.M IN SOUTHEAST ASIA, MAYBE THE WHOLE WORLD, AT ONLY 4%. IT TURNS OUT THAT THEY ARE WRONG AFTER ALL AS THE ACTUAL FIGURE IS ACTUALLY THE OPPOSITE AT 96% , PROVEN BY ALL THE POSTERS HERE WHO STILL SUPPORT THE DEMON QUEEN BY THE DEAD RIVER EVEN IF SHE IS ALREADY TURNING THIS NATION INTO HELL ON EARTH…

  26. @Noemi — what sane options do you recommend? we tried impeachment, once, twice, multiple times but it didn’t work. Why? kasi she paid off the legislators. It took a priest to blow the whistle on that one.

I don’t support what Trillanes did, kasi he violated the rule of law, but I do understand why he was impelled to do it.

GMA pushing for charter change is never a good thing though, especially if it’s just a way for her to extend her term. It’s plain as day that she’s fighting with everything she’s got to stay in power. Opposition naman remains fragmented. Something has to be done soon, otherwise more impatient people like Trillanes will just pop up, wreaking more havoc on our economy.

@BAYANI98: its not all the “demon queen’s” fault and i’m certainly not a GMA supporter. all it takes for evil to flourish is for good people to do nothing. so if this nation is hell on earth — its our collective responsibility.

  27. Quoting @mae

@mae – I was there. I was a few meters in front of the area where it was happening so imagine how scared I was for my safety. But I was scared even before the PNP/Military arrived. You are wrong in saying that the government made the first move. Trillanes made the first move when he decided to walk out of his trial and into the streets. By doing that he made THE decision to involve innocent people.

  28. Mae, do you even read history books?

The Magdalo paction was the one who KILLED Bonifacio.

Aguinaldo was indeed the first president of the Philippines, but don’t you know that he collaborated with the Americans, that’s why the US had their chance on taking over the Philippines. Who sane hero would sentence his COMRADE to death? Had he not tried to involve the Americans, then the US would not really have interest in the Philippines.

Nagsasawalang kibo? If we do not care at all, then why does this post and comments exist?

Buti sana kung yung coups and people power had proved to be effective but did it? NO. Not at all.

Nothing really changed when the Philippines ousted Marcos.

What happened under Cory Aquino – privatized many government assets, MASSACRED PROTESTING FARMERS AT MEDIOLA, increasing poverty rate

Did the “ouster” of ERAP made a better Philippines? NO. We replaced Estrada with someone who is worse and that is Arroyo. If we will not be careful with our next step, we might end up like Burma. In the late 80’s their MILITARY overthrew the democratic party and Burma is still suffering under the military junta. If we will not be careful with our next step, we will be worse than our present state.

Siguro maniniwala pa kami kay Trillanes if he sieged Camp Crame or Camp Aguinaldo or ivnoked a mass protest at EDSA. How can he convince the majority that he is sincere with his “idealistic reforms” when it is HIMSELF who risk PUBLIC SAFETY. Hello?? A HOTEL? A hotel is located where there are many civilians. Years ago, he did the same thing and HE INVOLVED EXPLOSIVES. Now what he did is to take hostage of the media people. How can you not doubt him if he is likes sieging hotels!

The issue here is not indifference of those who disagree with Trillanes but THE WAY OF TRILLANES’ REVOLT. IT’S SO DOUBTFUL! WHY IS HE WILLING TO RISK INNOCENT CIVILIANS FOR THE SAKE OF HIS GOAL? THIS IS THE SECOND TIME HE DID IT AND THE FIRST TIME HE DID, HE PLANTED REAL EXPLOSIVES AROUND OAKWOOD. WHAT IF THE BOMBS ACCIDENTALLY EXPLODED, HUH???

No wonder the for decades, the Philippines remains in the dark abyss. We like keep on using ineffective and inefficient means of solving our problems.

Tangina, ang dami nga dyang Pilipino, nagrereklamo na kurakot si Gloria(by the way, I don’t disagree with this) BUT sila mismo, NANGGOGOYO NG KAPWA PILIPINO. We’re in a vicious circle.

This is what most Filipinos fail to understand. Reforming this country is TWO WAY. The government must do their job, but so are the citizens. Problema sa Pilipinas is either one way or no way. We are good at criticizing the government(nothing wrong with this) but when the government comes up with a good and efficient programs that needs cooperation from the public, no reaction ang Pilipino. It’s not only the government or Arroyo’s fault why the Philippines is such in a pity state, it’s also the people’s fault. heck, inuuna pa ang issue se desperate housewives kesa magsegregate ng basura at tumawid sa tamang tawiran

  29. ““ignorance of the law excuses no one””

If you get to study law. THIS IS TRUE. Kung nagpark ka sa no parking area at hindi mo pala alam na no parking yun, hindi excuse ang “hindi mo alam”.

That’s reality. And it’s not only applicable in curfew, but in any situation. No Parking, No jaywalking.

If ignorance would be considered as an excuse, then we’re making more apathetic citizens

  30. Shame on you if you fool me once – (Cory Admin)
Shame on me if you fool me twice(Arroyo Admin)
I’m too stupid if you fool me thrice(Trillanes Martial Law/Military Junta)

    Take note: FIVE STAR HOTEL

  32. Miss Noemi, aren’t we tired of all this? i wonder if the magadalo soldiers will save trillanes in the prison and start to plan another “kudeta” i think that would be fun (i was just kidding)….
trillanes should pay for what he did…
sayang useless lang yung ginawa niya…

  35. We must do our part, Changes will only follow if all of us will cooperate to it. Next time if you guy’s decide to take up arms against the Government like Trillanes! do it in a place wherein civilian population is minimal and a more effective location.
