Michael Tan’s Opinion column on the “World’s Best Universities” which he based on the Times Higher Education Supplement-Quacquarelli Symonds (THES-QS) World University Rankings provided so many insights on the state of Philippine Education . I’m glad to see that the universities of my two girls made it to the top 500 , including two other universities. We can’t compare the Philippines to America, Australia or the UK. Harvard is the number 1 school followed by Cambridge. But take look at Indonesia, a country less developed than the Philippines. It had three universities, all state-run, beating us in rankings
Let’s look at how the Philippines did. The University of the Philippines (UP) came in 299th globally and 47th among Asian universities. I have to say that’s not too bad, considering how UP has had to plod along with shrinking budgets and with the flight of so many good professors. Trailing behind UP were three private universities: De La Salle (392nd), Ateneo de Manila (484th) and, talk about a photo finish, the University of Santo Tomas at 500th.
With slashed budget from our government, it’s surprising that the state university is still alive and kicking. When I brought M around the UP campus as an incoming freshman, I was appalled at Palma Hall’s old chairs, broken windows, and dirty walls. It was as if they had not done any cosmetic renovation since I graduated over 30 years ago. I was confident that UP had dedicated professors inspite of the decrepit state of some classrooms. In the beginning, M’s heart was really not into the state university. She wanted to join her eldest sister at Ateneo. I insisted that UP is the better school and for economic reasons, it was the better option than Ateneo. I convinced her that her maternal grandmother was one of the pioneer students of the UP Diliman Campus. It was my mother’s legacy to pass on the values and great education that UP had to offer. After much tears and several arguments, she relented. Today , M is full of gratitude that she chose UP.
Now what about Ateneo? L is not too happy with Ateneo not because of the education but on the student mix. I’d rather not discuss that here because that is her personal opinion. As a parent, I’m not completely satisfied if the tuition fee investment is worth it. This is just one example. Ateneo does not have computerized or online registration. Maybe they had years ago but today, it does not exist. I know UP and La Salle has, and even the university where my husband is connected. Ateneans have to queue based on their random number on their scheduled day. Not only that , they have to go to the Ateneo campus to retrieve their grades. I know I am comparing UP and Ateneo but still, compare the semestral UP tuition of 7,000 pesos ($140) versus Ateneo’s 55,000 pesos ($1,100). As to the quality of education, I believe M gets a better deal compared to L. Education is not all about academics and campus activities. (*edit November 7-The latter sentence was misunderstood by an Atenean loyalist I think. What I meant in the last sentence was that the heterogenous campus mix in UP gives M a distinct advantage over L’s Ateneo’s student population. See first sentence of this paragraph. )
UP is still among the world’s best, but if we worked harder on the entire educational system, we should have more reason to be proud. Ultimately, we should be able to look at these university rankings as indicators of our current development strategies, as well as predictors of the country’s future.

1. UP drops from rank 299 to 398.
2. Ateneo now outranks La Salle taking the 451th rank
3. La Salle is not in the top 500 (now at 519)

UP, meanwhile, has not been giving data to THES-QS survey for two years, said Jose Wendell P. Capili, associate dean for academic affairs of the College of Arts and Letters, and yet it continues to rank. While something to crow about, there is a sense in UP that it’s still better than a number of universities on the THES-QS list. Many UP officials also feel the ranking is skewed toward schools with money, and that it does not have emphasis for fields such as arts and the humanities, Mr. Capili said.
But UP economist Solita C. Monsod said Philippine universities should treat the rankings as a “wake-up call.”
“[We should not have this] false sense of righteousness … everybody is being compared to everybody,” she told BusinessWorld.
Local universities should also not take offense that others in the region have a higher rank, because “it is what it is.” At least, the global rankings are a “consistent benchmark,” Ms. Monsod said.
thank God, among Philippine universities, UP is still the number one. well, i give my gratitude to the professors who, despite the offer of a greener pasture, did not join the exodus of state university professors to private academic institutions.
i did not know that ateneo does not have an on-line registration. fortunately, UP Manila has an on-line registration process with guaranteed slots.
i was also considering of going to the ateneo but who would not reconsider the cornucopia of money we would save.

My husband and his brothers being green-blooded, the default choice for my daughter’s university was DLSU, and she didn’t offer resistance to that. I did though because I thought Q.C. is such a far distance from Taft. Three years down the line, my daughter is happily working her Lit course, and has no regrets at all in being green.
@aaron- it’s my number one too because it’s the alma mater of my mother, and my siblings except for one brother who went to Ateneo. That’s where I met my ex-boyfriend, now my husband 🙂 My daughter is a third generation UP student.
@poppycock- It’s opposite for me. We live closer to La Salle but L chose Ateneo.

Sorry if I’m aggravating anyone by posting this comment. But I must disagree.
Though there is an extremely wide gap between the tuition fees of the two schools, UP and Ateneo, the per student-per unit spending is of a comparable amount. The only reason why tuition in UP is cheaper is because it is subsidized by the government. In short, money from the nation’s pocket.
The big difference is that Ateneo students shoulder the whole of their education, unlike UP students.
And just something on the side: wouldn’t it be shameful is a private university outranked the more prestigious state university? Just food for thought.

And the Ateneo has computerized registration, for your information. We just don’t get to do it at home for very logical reasons.

Yes, they do. Actually, my brother goes to La Salle.
But there is controversy over the use of those facilities. And oh, I’m sure you’ve heard of their new ‘building.’ I guess it depends on the spending priorities of each university. In UP’s case, chairs and windows don’t seem to be too important. And for us in Ateneo, a majority of classrooms don’t even have air-conditioning.
Anyway, to leave all the this-school-is-better-than-that-school-even-though-this-school-has-lower-tuition argument, I think it is important to ask where the problem lies really?
Is it the government at fault? And if it is, what should be done.

Yes, you could say that I am a loyal Atenean. I friggin’ love the school. It is the most prestigious. I’m not sure if it is the best, but I believe it is the most prestigious in the country.
And I don’t know with that student population thing. Some say that the extremes of the student population in UP is a disadvantage. But personally, it is an experience I’d like to have.
And last, I chanced upon your blog when I searched for the UP Tuition Raise Issue in the internet. That thing with the 300% tuition fee increase.

@Miguel- for the sake of my global readers, I will reply in English. I have toured both Ateneo and La Salle. La Salle and Ateneo has its own niche or specialty. . La Salle seems to be excellent in IT and finance while Ateneo is strong in the Arts, and management. UP is strong in most courses. My opinion is based on my personal experience n or my daughter’s experience. After all this is my blog. I cannot speak for others. I am not the expert on college education. I talk based on my experience and perception . I am not an authority of college education. My entry is not the gospel truth. Other parents have their own opinion. I hope you can discern the difference of this blog entry and a research on top universities. REPEAT: my blog is just a commentary on the article, TOP 500 universities in the world. Get it?
Education is not limited in the classrooms . We learn from our classmates and our teachers outside the classroom experience. With the heterogenous mix of UP students, one has more exposure to the real world compared to Ateneo students. It is a known fact that 90% of Ateneans are in the middle to upper middle class income.
I’m proud I chose the University of the Philippines over other universities.
I graduated from the UP College of Business Administration some four years back and now I’m residing in Chicago. I’ve always wanted to finish an MBA course in the states and because my family is here in Illinois, I just chose the nearest most prestigious university instead of going to pennsylvania for wharton or to massachusetts for harvard…
The University of Chicago had been a consistent TOP 10 university in the world. When I applied last year for my MBA, I was really surprised that the university only credits/considers undergraduate degrees from only one university from the philippines; the University of the Philippines Diliman.
I could never claim that UP is the best just because of this instance. I’m just happy I made the right choice back then.
Now, just one more year to go, and I would finish my MBA here. I plan to go back to my beloved home, Pilipinas and expand my business that my wife and I started here in the states. Also, I want to teach in UP part time. I would never forget what my business policy professor told me (Dr. Manuel Alba – former budget minister of the philippines), “So, you are proud because you are a UP student? Just imagine what UP professors feel about themselves.”

Yes its really disappointing that the Philippines top universities are ranked lower than Indonesia which was very behind the Philippines 35 years ago…however the truth is the Philippines is so much behind Indonesia now in terms of progress and economic prosperity; and that is proven by the many highly educated Filipino professionals who are now living and working in Jakarta. Most of these highly paid professionals are employed by the biggest oil companies in the world and multinational companies, and many are also teachers in local schools or international schools based in Jakarta…even the teachers are highly paid and in U.S. dollars so they are all able to enjoy a quality of life which they won’t be able to in Manila. my brother who is a MBA graduate of AIM in Manila has been working for the second biggest conglomerate (an oil company) in Jakarta for 10 years now, and during his yearly visits to Manila with his family, he has seen the differences and how much progress Indonesia has really gone through the years… it’s really sad but that’s reality which I believe not many Filipinos are aware of… the Philippines cannot even compete with Indonesia which is an oil producing country and which has really surpassed our country for the past 2 decades. that is the reason why so many of the highly educated professionals end up working there enjoying a better quality of life with all the amenities of expat living.
I personally think that the THES-QS TOP University list is about biases and popularity. They also arbitrarily put Australian and British universities far more than it deserves. And, who are the people voting and rating the surveys? Those who are from the Western Universities. Biases will always be there. If I were from University of Oxford, of course, I would prefer to give a better rating that Kyoto University.
There are also indicators in the list that should no longer be considered – like the proportion of international faculty and international students. Is this necessary in the list? I don’t think so. I don’t believe that having a great number of faculty members or students from oversease would make a university a good one. There are schools in the Philippines that do not accept international students… they should also take into account other universities in the Philippines…
And, what about the graduate employability? Do they have the statistics that actually reflects the number of graduates in relation to their marketability? Again, if I were a businessman from Harvard, I would think that more Harvard graduates would get the job than the graduates of University of California…

In the Philippines, we regard Ateneo as one of the top universities… in what area or field? I only know one or two field they are good at, and that is LAW and PHILOSOPHY… will these two things be good enough to consider them a top university?
DLSU is good at Engineering and some Sciences.
PLM is good at Medicine, Nursing, Physical Therapy, Accountancy, Social Work.
PUP and FEU are both OK.
UST is good at Pharmacy, Medicine, Nursing, Architecture and Physical Therapy.
Of couse, UP is the best so far… it has the biggest budget of all universities and it performs well in most licensure exams.
Each school has its own strengths and weakness.
And on the issue of other countries getting ahead of Philippines, I found out this morning that our beloved nation is not the largest English-speaking country in Asia anymore. We are now behind India. Thus, making us the 4th largest English-speaking nation in the world.

As a student from DLSU. It is sad to hear that many people think that DLSU is only ranked higher than Ateneo among private universities because of the greater availability of facilities. La salle deserves that spot not just because of its sophisticated learning and campus equipment, it is because of the better availability of courses offered to its students. An example is the engineering departement of La salle which ranks superb against what Ateneo has. Another course offering is Accounting which Ateneo doesn’t offer. There are many more to mention. I sincerely believe that UP is the leading university in the country (Base on what I conclude from SURVEYS and OPINIONS of OTHERS). It could have increased its ranking further if only the government would properly allocate funds for the recreation of the school grounds. But unfortunately knowing the Philippine political system, it is hard to expect.

Hello to all the bloggers! Actually, i will not comment on anything, knowing that i haven’t experienced what “university life” is yet. I’m a graduating high school student this year and I do need your thoughts because, right now, i’m having second thoughts on which university to pursue. I got accepted at UST(bspsych&acct.) and ADMU(abpsych). And reading the rest of your blogs, its very easy to get confused. you all had some valuable things to say that left me thinking again and again. God bless to all of you and thank you for taking time to read my blog.
P.S. my mom wants me to pursue Ateneo. she said that Ateneo students stand out everywhere because of high standards of education

WHY? because of its characteristics very distinct from other universities like UP and DLSU…. in the first place, Ateneans need not to debate on this matter for ATENEO gives what’s best and what’s right for its students…. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE, VALUE FORMATION, EXTERNAL LINKAGES, COMPETENCE AMONG FELLOW UNIVERSITIES.. name it and ATENEO has it… maybe.. UP performs better than ateneo in terms of academic rankings, but in truth, UP does not inculcate in its student the values essential to this society… they tolerate their students’ liberalism which often lead to their what-they-say as “radicalism”.. UP failed on this matter.. so what will happen to our country if all of its intellectual graduates (who sooner or later will be our political leaders)are radical?? try to think… and ONE THING MORE!! Entering UP system is not that difficult at all. Why?? sometimes students just choose NON-QUOTA COURSES and eventually SHIFT to the courses they want… unlike the ATENEO that requires you to beat the BEST OF THE BEST FROM ALL THE OTHER SCHOOLS IN THE COUNRTY, just to enter in their university…. Now DLSU, on the other hand, is nothing compared to ATENEO.. they usuallly boast their STATE-OF-THE-ART Facilities but i’m not convinced on the way they form their students intellectually and behaviorally.. their students, most of the times, get too boastful!! I get so IRRITATED with them… and i know some cases that they actually acquire students that are not as competitive as the Ateneans; for, they tend to easily give-in to “RECONSIDERATIONS” to those students who failed in their exams.. i know i’m not in the “college life” yet but i think i’ve weighted schools quite enough and i’ve research enough to say that i,indeed, have a heart to the ATENEO.. i’nm sorry if i had to express my opinions against la salle and up… but i’m just driven by my emotions to the different comments and the article itself. that’s why i seem not to pursue my pol. sci course in UP for i tend to be radical on my opinions and actions…
… maybe i still have a lot to debate in my mind… i have worries about picking the wrong university for me… 75% of my decision goes with ADMU while the other 25% is brought by the influences of the outside forces telling me to go to UP, DLSU-M, UST, DLSU-D, and UA&P… Damn.. i’m really confused..

Harvard, like UP, is great at all academic levels — undergrad, grad, and postgrad.
Ateneo is good, but it’s different from Harvard. For one, it is a religious school affiliated with the Jesuits. It has a high school and is exclusive for boys. (Harvard does not discriminate gender and sexes.) Ateneo uses blue as its schools color. (Harvard has crimson which is almost similar to UP’s maroon.) UP was founded by some American scholars who were all Harvard alumni.
I would think Ateneo is more of a Georgetown or Boston College than a Harvard. UP is more of a Harvard than Ateneo is. Anyone who would think Ateneo is like Harvard must be out of his mind. Probably is delusional.
Obviously, with such crab mentality, you are not from UP or Ateneo. I can see that you are an ateneo fan.
You have no right to say that UP failed in forming values because you have no pertinent knowledge to say that! You have no idea on how UP profs teach their students and must be a UP student to know how our profs teach us to love and sacrifice for our country.
In that matter, you might not deserve to be an Atenean. If Ateneo is, the closest competetor of UP, their students must be atleast prudent on what they say.
Only an Iskolar ng Bayan can know what UP has really to offer! Remember that, before you say anything else, you don’t know anything yet

I’m also a graduating high scool student this year. As of now, I’m still confused on what university to go to. I was accepted at ADMU(BS legal management),UP(BS bio),UST(BS nursing),siliman(BS med tech), and Southville foriegn colleges(BS International business, BS International marketing)… After reading this blog, i got more confused!!
Everyone i ask tells me to go to ADMU.. They say it’s the best and that i will have no problem in finding a job when i graduate there…
Anyway, i still have a few more weeks to decide.. I will surely consider everything i have read here…
What course do you really like, RK? If your heart is in BS Bio, then go to UP . Then Legal Management , take it in Ateneo. It’s a matter of the course too.

i passed up and la salle, i belong to the top 15% of Ateneo..
i am among the top 100 passers of USt, i am among the top exminees at ua&p… now… my scholarship was denied in Ateneo and i was devastated for i can’t afford to study there eventhough i regarded admu as my dream school.. UP system has increased about 300% of its tuition.. but the University of asia and the pacific granted me the merit scholarship which covers 100% tution and misc. fees and all.. i have nothing to pay.. but the deadline for the scholarship agreement is feb 26 and that’s freakin’ close!!! i don’t want that schlrshp be put into waste but i can’t afford losing ateneo.. i also have financial prob so i can’t just choose any of the schools… please… help me… decide

Go UP. I am sure they have financial aid. Just show your Income Tax Return of your parents. Though UP increased tuition, it’s still way below Ateneo. If I am not mistake, 25,000 pesos per semester. Ateneo is at least 52,000 a semester. You are so blessed to have passed all the best schools. Still UP is the best.
My daughter who is now in second year UP BA Psych cried when I told her I couldn’t afford Ateneo. I told her to study at UP since it is a quality school anyway. She often tells me that she is happy she chose UP.
the UP culture is really different though. I went to a UP-run high school so the transition wasn’t that shocking, but I’ve seen people from public schools whose heads really spin once they see the demographics.

As an HR practitioner, I believe that graduates of UP,ADMU,DLSU and UST easily get employed. However, choosing the right course for college really depends on your values and plans in the future. If you feel like migrating to the US or Canada, the best thing to do is take a Nursing course. Between UP and UST, the latter is better. If you feel like migrating in the US or Canada for broad reasons, take any course in UP. You see, it all depends on your values.

To everyone here: be careful of what you say for you may ruin your own school. My point? My point is by having such comparisons, we are implying that we’ve learned from our schools that the benefit of education solely depends on one’s school. Think about those who don’t have the opportunity to study. All they want is to finish even though it means getting through an unpopular college.
Honestly, I’m quite sick of all these comparisons. Don’t ask me where I had come from. I can just tell you that I’m from one of those schools being compared with each other. People never really see the bigger picture here. We go to college for our future. Isn’t it enough that we are gifted with such benefits? Are we implying that we are greedy for such honor? That we want more and more for ourselves?

come to think of it, college education in a THIRD WORLD COUNTRY like the Philippines is no longer a right but a Privilege. So why become honour-greedy?!
Ateneo, La Salle, and UST are all Catholic schools. Did Catholicism teach us about giving God thanks to what we have?
to the UP students, haven’t your professors thought you that you have a big responsibility over all of these priviliges the State is giving you?!
even though i aint a student of any of these prestigious schools, i am happy that i am able to go to school. and i am proud that a will be graduating in april 20, as a reciprocated all the sacrifices my parents have done by doing what is expected of me as a student.
i will just stress this out: it is not the school where you took that program, but how you behave while you were still a student! Success considers background , but greatly depends on the ability of the person to adopt!!!!
There are probably more english-speaking indians because of their population but believe me PINOYS are better. I can assure you that if you had a chance to work with them, you’ll know what I mean!!!

I am a proud Engineer from DLSU but even if I graduated from DLSU, I feel bad that the Phil education system is not recognize anywhere else (except nurses bec they can work as nurses). I really hope that the educational system in the Philippines will be improved and will be comparable with other nations. Imagine, our highschool grads cannot even enter universities abroad because we only have 10 years of primary and secondary educ. This is why we were behind other nations. I know some people who studied abroad – they have to enroll in college for two years before they can pursue their studies in other countries or like the rich ones, they study in an international school. I tell you, whether you are graduate of UP, La Salle or Ateneo, the international community does not recognize our graduates especially engineers. I was just lucky to be able to work as an engineer because of my experience but believe me my rates are way below than those who studied in other countries.

I passed:
UP Diliman – BS Psych
ADMU – AB Comm
DLSU – AB OCM
UST – BS Psych and AB Behavioral Science
Actually, I’m down between UP and Ateneo.
Passing in UP Diliman is definitely laborious because of the UPCAT but I can’t deny that ADMU is also not permeable when it comes to choosing students.
But here are some scenarios…
The gov’t withdtrawn its state subsidy to UP, thus forcing UP
increase its tuition to 300%.
ADMU gave me a 100% scholarship.
Oh no… I’m having a headache… (sigh)
Please help me to choose the best choice.
Mark: Pick in terms of the course. A good student will be a good student as long as he/she goes to a competent school (Id like to think that all four schools that you mentioned are good). AB COMM and BS PSYCH are two totally different fields. Most Psych grads find themselves going to Medicine after graduation.

Mark: If I were in your shoes, I’d choose the course that I’d really like to study. The choice of degree will have a lifetime impact. Do you want to regret the course you studied for the rest of life? I know a lot people (including myself) who think we should have taken another course.
If you can pay the fees skip the scholarship. The savings seem a lot because you were calculating based on ADMU’s tuition fee rates. Think about this, if you to go ADMU, you’ll need to maintain your scholarship. Granted that you are smart enough to keep it, still there will always be a chance to lose it, you may not end up saving in the end.

@mark-just follow your heart… there is no best school… but there is the best school for you…. as for me, i turned down UA&p’s scholarship offer and their stipends and dorm lodging and everything.. just to study in the Ateneo…. we are lucky to have this privilege… enjoy tertiary life… =)
The surevey is a hoax. data are inaccurate. UP, Ateneo and UST could have ranked higher if the information sent was accurate and fair. kudos to up dlsu ateneo and ust
Go on and bicker…UST is still the best for me…It’s a mix of all types of people…Walang inferior/superior factor unlike with DLSU and ADMU…It’s just plain fun…hahaha…:)

I think the reason why UP is just ranked 299th in the world is because the organization who conducted the survey also considered the facilities of each universities together with the quality of graduates, number of research and thesis produced
and of course the number of professors in that particular University. And we know that even if UP is being subsidized by
the State,still our budget is not even comparable to that of
Ateneo or Lasalle. That explains why Ateneo and LaSalle have better facilities.
So maybe the general ranking of UP went down because of its facilities. But we may concede that the kind and amount of facilities that a University have should not be equated to the quality of education given by the University.
UP could have a higher rank if it just have the same kind of facilities that Ateneo and Lasalle have ( sige na nga UST na
din).

UP,LASALLE,ATENEO,UST… cut behind the rest… but in terms of licensure examinations… UP,UST,LASALLE,ATENEO… UP has the most number of courses(330) while UST has (188) Lasalle (77) and ATENEO (53).. SEE??
GUys!Base on my experiences everything is depedns on the students, what type of students,ya if you got a good teacher and facilities then its a resources to make learning easy but everything on the students, as a students you must invest hardworks if you want to succeed…schools only is a guidance fro your future…If the students really want to become an Engineer for example then he must invest for it…guys today its a information age, you can find information on the web already…anyway I am from La Salle also, BS Coe…:)
i just read all the bickering here. now i’m suffering from a headache.
i think it’s a normal to defend to their own alma maters but not to the point where the other schools get bashed. we shouldn’t compare. after all, each school has their own fortes.
i’m from a UP highschool and i studied in UPD for 2 years—before transferring to the ADMU. please don’t give me the ‘you’re-crazy-why-the-heck-would-you-do-that’ speech because i’ve already received loads of it. i have fellow ADMU transferees from UP as well.
i won’t say the reason why i did such thing, but it just goes to show that people have their own preferences and that we shouldn’t be blinded by the popularity of the schools. we shouldn’t choose a school solely because other people label them as the best. we should also consider our education (the course that we’re going to take) and more importantly, if we’re going to be happy during our four-year stay in that school.
last thing. graduates of these top universities who are lazy and with no knowledge on how to “handle” things, are most likely to be beaten by graduates in “so-so” universities who are hardworking and “may diskarte sa buhay”. but that’s just my opinion.
hey amy, i too have a couple of friends who transferred from u.p. to ateneo.
took the ateneo exam in ’96 but went to study in the states. then came to the philippines in ’97 and went to ateneo (didn’t take the entrance exam anymore again since they said i was a merit scholar in the ’96 exam).
was ateneo all that great? well, i honestly believe that i learned more reading books and magazines and newspapers in the rizal library than in any of my classes. would it be any different if i went to u.p. or la salle or u.s.t. for example? i doubt it.
i’m not saying ateneo sucks or philippine schools sucks. it’s just that the philippine educational culture focuses more on theory and memorization rather that practice and application. it a shame that the system generally rewards people who memorizes what they don’t understand and punishes those that understands what they did not memorize.
another thing, boredom. most of my classes in ateneo were boring as hell, save for p.e. class perhaps. i don’t know why they have to make it so boring and uninteresting. only a few professors are even worth paying attention too, and they are all in the philosphy field. i agree 100% with fritz redl when he said “boredom will always remain the greatest enemy of school disciplines.”
in contrast, i studied a year in the states and i was actually excited going to class everyday. most classes were like watching discovery channel (which by the way is a favorite of mine). my chemistry professor dr. wallace worked part time (sometimes even during our lab class) as like the c.s.i. lab dude for the police. we were also the first batch required to bring our own laptop to computer class so it was cool. government class was i think the only boring class i had there so i always just leave a tape-recorder with my 40-year-old classmate (i was the youngest in that class because i chose a night class to free up my whole friday for gimik time) so he can record the whole class for me.
sorry for all the kwento. just reminiscing. anyways, i am a firm believer in the notion that one makes his own education, not a particular school or college. and i believe you have to be really interested in what you are studying to make college education work for you. i think c. wright mills’s quote sums up what i’m trying to get at: “the aim of the college, for the individual student, is to eliminate the need in his life for the college; the task is to help him become a self-educating man.”

Hello people! I’m a Mombugakesho Scholar in Japan. I am well aware that UP and other big universities in the country didnt rank well and by reading all the related blogs you seem to be knowledgeable of the reasons behind this issue. Since I am in this country, the home of the top university in Asia except for the most recent ranking, I have observed how their schools work. Their universities dont focus upon academics but on RESEARCH. All graduating students in colleges and universties are required to produce research before they can earn their degrees. In the final year of the students, they get very few classes so they can give more time to their research. My classmates for instance have only one subject left and all the rest of their time should be used for their individual research. So we can imagine how many research would they be able to generate per year! This does not include yet the researches done in Graduate and Post-Graduate schools. Of course the number of rsearch decreases as the level goes higher especially in the Phils. With this strategy of Japan’s universities they can really make it to the top. There are of course other significant reasons but this one is something our universities dont simply have.
In the Phils we only make RESEARCH if we want to pursue higher education but in Japan it’s different, all students must do a research before graduating in college. In addition to that, in our country we can only do research or thesis if we pass first the dreadful comprehensive examinations. There r of course some courses which dont follow this rule but majority of the graduate courses would require this which many of the students find impossible and discouraging. In Japan all u have to do is to make sure u know your topic well and ur willing to do and to finish the research before the school year ends no more no less. If we could do the same in the Phils for sure we will conquer Asia.
As with the teaching abilities of the Japanese professors, it has been studied that most of them are have poor teaching abilities. Compared with my Professors in PNU, they wont stand a chance. Students themselves find them boring and traditional. Japanese only excel because they have the means to carry out their research but if we will compare Filipinos and Japanese Professors, the former will emerge as more skillful, knowledgeable and creative. The difference is that majority of Japanese are extremely hardworking. They dont stop until they get what they want. Anyway the bottomline is let us not despair, Filipinos dont rank low. The ratings wont really tell the truth. We know better than them!
i’m so thankful that i was admitted to UP. i love everything here! the community, the culture, and of course, the academe! definitely home for the intellectuals…if you pass the UPCAT exam, think no more…after your stay in UP, u might find yourself again in this blogsite writing: thank God i chose UP.

it doesn’t really matter what school you’re from! it’s never been an issue in our family. i was also from a DLSU school who got a scholarship to an ADMU HS summer program. i think i’m pretty authorized to speak on this issue.
it’s what you do with your degree that MATTERS~~~!
stop bashing other schools esp. if you haven’t even tried studying there yourself. for a more balanced discussion try mentioning both the pros & cons instead. stop letting the green-eyed monster rule your judgment.
THOUGH UP may have a bigger budget (though I doubt this now…aside from the high tuition fees, ADMU & DLSU also gets lots of funding from their own networks)….the UP system’s also bigger–it’s got a lot of employees, more facilities to maintain…kung marami ba namang pera e di perfectly manicured na sana yung lawns dun.
who says UP doesn’t inculcate values to its students? we get stereotyped as RADICALS just cause people are not used to the kind of concepts that the students there think of. we’re just MORE TOLERANT when it comes to different points of view. this way, more lively discussions emerge…hindi yung bawal na agad kaya di na agad mapag-usapan…different points of view are welcome there. conservatives, liberals, innovators–all are welcome there:)

Hello everyone.I am a foreign student who is very much interested in the people and culture of the philippines.
Philippine is a great nation but to my utmost surprise,a lot of you do not appreciate what you have and on the contrary,rant and compare your universities.Is it not obvious to you that the people who compare and rank these so called ”world’s best unversities” are alumni and associates[practically] of the same universities.
Look at the university of Cape town,the best university in Africa,was ranked worldwide at number 397..Get to this university,take a look at the facilities, find out the performance of thier graduates in various fields……..you will be surprised to find that most of them are far much better in productivity than those from Chicago and Yale.
So what criteria do these ”analyst” use to rank universities?……..Is it not obvious that much of the criteria is predefined by location,prejudice,loyalty,popularity and ”neighbourhood”?
Stop blaming your institutions and concentrate on how you can make Philippines a better Philippines for the next generation.Let them rank and rank and rank in thier bureacracies..Forget it and go ahead with transforming your nation………………third world is not the best description for Africa and some Asian countries like the Philippines…………….we deserve better

Ateneo is a disappointment because, as a graduate of that school, I find the curriculum to be too application-oriented, in the sense that, student vision and thinking are bounded by practical theory. I find that I am being smothered with real-world practice that I am unable to see the potential in developing and expanding these theories that were thought to me. That school does not foster critical, hypothetical, thinking, which, i think, is the basis of research and what makes great thinkers. Just imagine yourself living in a box, when studying in that school.

The latest rankings show that Tokyo Uni is the top in Asia with Stansfield Uni in USA as the top in the world. Taiwan Uni is second in Asia with MIT in US ranking 2nd in the world. The list gives you the top 4000 universities in the world. The rankings are of July 2007.

The only edge of Ateneo over La Salle is that their campus is located on a better place.

To those who took up Lia-Com in DLSU-M, go for it. Im taking POM-ACM(political science and business management spec. in applied corporate management)a double degree 6 year course =) funny nga na sabi ng iba madali lang makapasa ng La Salle pero mahirap makatapos =). Unlike other university na semestral, DLSU has trimestral.
What’s best in DLSU-M:
Lia-Com Program – a combination of one major course in the College of Liberal Arts and one from College of Business and Economics
College of Engineering (all courses)
It is true that La Salle offers better Computer Studies courses than other universities.
Legal Management is better in La Salle.

Iba po kasi ang environment sa loob ng UP, radical sila in some way na nakakaaffect ng social abilities nila. =) Yung mga nagtatapos ng business sa UP-D nahihirapan kumuha ng trabaho kasi di rin naeexpose ang mga studyante sa business world. I mean maganda nga pero pag di mo alam o di mo naexperience, di mo talaga kaya. Di kasi sila binibigyan ng pondo ng gobyerno para ilabas ang mga estudyante. Hanggang campus lang sila, nag-aaral. Nakakalabas pero di malayo. Di tulad ng DLSU at ADMU nakakapagpadala ng students sa corporate firms. Like in my case, sa course ko i have a year or 3 terms of working experience. tama? =) Kaya naging 6 years. Ang maganda pa dun, after a term of trying to work yung next term balik to campus ka ulit. then next term off campus nanaman =) vv. =)

You see guys, rankings talk. Whether or not we love them or hate them, they are authentic and scientific than our honorable opinion. When that THES rankings was published, everybody loved it, even the ones who hated it loved it. That survey negated the common notion that admu is THE SCHOOL. Ateneo could not accept that it lagged behind DLSU. As for ADMU, do well next season, not just in basketball but in THES as well.

stop arguing on what school is better.. it won’t help on boosting the development of our nation .. for me, it only depends on the student/alumni himself.. what if you graduated from the best university but you don’t have the guts to apply for a job, or simply you just can’t handle it? it’s as simple as that. but for me, the confidence, skills, socialization, critical thinking, and almost everything can be learned not only inside but outside the classrooms of UP.. =)

–> I totally disagree, entering UP was never that easy.. And i don’t have to expound on that. Let the statistics or studies show it. regarding the case of shifting, it’s another matter to deal with.. Based on my experience, shifting to another course is another “pgpasok-sa-karayom” test… You can’t just shift to another course if you haven’t reached a certain GWA which is above average of course… if you’re not that good, you’ll get stuck on the non-quota course where you have qualified.. so don’t try to talk as if you know it all.. try to support your claims with details.. okay? =)
DLSU is known for its excellence in programs like Engineering, Computer Sciences, Education, Business, Accountancy and also Health-Science Courses like Medicine, Nursing, Radiologic Tech, Physical Therapy. The La Sallian community is growing there are now 18 district schools in the country and a number of supervised schools. Now nearing its centennial La Salle has proven its worth in Philippine society for building outstanding Christian leaders and achievers! Animo La Salle!
All College entrance exams are incipient inroads towards academic freedom. karapatan ng bawat kabataan o mamamayang pilipino na makapag-ara. hindi dapat subukin ang katalinuhan ng isang tao sa pagkuha exam lamang ng isang entrance exam dahil ito’y maaaring maging balakad sa karapatan o kalayaan ng isang tao na makapag-aral. mungkahi ko lamang sa lahat ng unibersidad dito sa pilipinas public man o private. sa tingin ko na ang pagaaral ng walang balakid o hadlang ay siyang magiging susi sa pagunlad ng ating bayan.

THAT’S JUST IT!
After the intense international criticism following the release of last year’s ranking, the THES has now released the new and improved 2007 ranking. Sadly, this time only 2 schools appear in the top 500. (Which makes me wonder what will happen to the shameless marketing campaign launched by La Salle based on its beating Ateneo last year).
This time, La Salle doesn’t even appear in the list of top 500 schools.

SUPER KARMA ang ibang school jan that used such ranking study last year to the hilt just so to make their school appear superior to the rest to the point of dragging other schools down. Yes, I’m talking about that particular school sa Taft na uber hyped ang pagka 392nd last year and even claimed that they indeed WERE the best private university in the land.
So kumusta naman??? Im sure that particular enhancement in the peer review criterion wherein one can no longer vote for its own school affected them so much.
Of all 4 Philippine schools, the one that enjoyed most the result of last year’s ranking is the WORST casualty of this year’s result – DOWN BY 127 PLACES!!!

Notice that all of these schools (except for those in Singapore) have pretty comparable scores. So the specific ranking from 3 to 16 could very well be reshaped by slightly fiddling with the criteria. Perhaps the only conclusion to be drawn from this is that at least two of our best schools are still comparable with our neighbor’s best. Anything more will depend on the arbitrariness of the THES criteria.
I’m still curious to know how that “school” in Taft can salvage anything from their premature obnoxiousness. So what now? Without anything backing their delusions of grandeur, what banners or ads will they come up with now?
Despite all the misspellings last year, this must certainly be their biggest faux pas. So much for “AL SALLE” and “NUF SAID”.

You see guys, rankings talk. Whether or not we love them or hate them, they are authentic and scientific than our honorable opinion. When that THES rankings was published, everybody loved it, even the ones who hated it loved it. That survey negated the common notion that admu is THE SCHOOL. Ateneo could not accept that it lagged behind DLSU. As for ADMU, do well next season, not just in basketball but in THES as well.

Lol…It’s just really fun to sit back here diliman and watch those two colors wrestle for the silver spot…some individuals here just never get tired of the bash-trash.. every once in a while one of them even side-swiped an opinion about our business course like “..maganda po sa UP basta hindi business” haha… well that’s easy to swallow since he stressed that it’s just his opinion..but nevertheless still a retard’s opinion hehe..
well, for the benefit of the green-blue bashers i’ll dip in my toes for a while and share some of my observations…
i have a handful of friends coming from those “elite” (daw) universities, and isa lang talaga masasabi ko…mayayaman tlga sila! hehe kidding aside…pansin ko lang sa mga atenista eh hindi sila masyadong apektado sa mga serbey-serbey na yan, kahit pa noong mga taong sila ang pumapangalawa sa kalidad ng edukasyon ay hindi nila ito masyadong ipinagmamalaki at isinasampal sa ibang institusyon.. pero ang lasallista naman ay yung mga tipong “kahit mamatay na pamilya namin ok lang basta lumamang kami sa ateneo”…wag na nating isali ang UP dahil talagang hindi na namin pinansin ang THES…
As what i read and heard, UP snubbed THES officials when asked to submit current demographic information about the university, ateneo and ust on the other hand didn’t show much enthusiasm and cooperation knowing that the criteria used for their 2006 survey lacked credibility and objectiveness… mukhang lasalle lang yung sigi ng sigi and even disclosed some inaccurate information… talaga nga naman…

IT’S SO UNFAIR!
How come the University of the Philippines dropped to 398? May I know the criteria set when they determine the rankings? I think the data given by the World University Rankings are opinionated. I have the chance of working with people from the east to the west part of the globe for working overseas nearly 10 years now and should I say, my education, technical and communication skills, are at par or even better than of those people who came from those top 50 countries mentioned above. I am proud to be a Filipino.

Sa totoo lang, nawawalan na rin ata ng gana ang UP for surveys like this one, with due respect to former president dodong nemenzo na nagpursiging itayo ang school in the international arena, UP realized not to take the survey seriously na last year, i’ve read from a UP publication that UP is questioning the criteria used, at ‘yong scoring system….well, kahit na mag first place ang UP sa world ranking, wala rin namang nagagawa ang gobyerno para lalo pang i-develop ang UP, nilulustay lang ang pera ng masang pilipino na dapat sana ay para sa edukasyun….give it to ateneo and la sALLE na lang, kulang pa ata sila sa recognition eh..hehe…but then, kahit na ganun…hindi pa rin naman naaalis ang UP sa listahan…and still the best and the premier university in the Philippines….talunin muna nila ang UP sa Philippines’ top universities ranking, bago sila magka-ubusan ng hiya at laway sa pagtatalo ’bout the ranking in the THES QS rankings..
..i’ve heard nga, mas dumarami daw kumukuha ng graduate studies sa ateneo at la salle kisa sa UP lalo na sa social sciences (like psych, socio, history, etc.. kasi daw takot silang bumagsak sa UP..haha..

Well, apparently everyone’s trying to defend their own school. While this certain world ranking reflects some truth, my own thought, is that, what matters really is how the graduates actually turn out in the real world. Do they become corrupt citizens or catalysts for change? Do they stay humble and change the world? Or do they spend time throwing mud at other people and institutions, just to prove their point?
UP, ADMU, DLSU, UST and others. These are all respectable schools, masters of education in their own right.
A little respect. Its not like your school is proud of you, which gives you no right to blabber all about what school is better.

Isa naman sa criteria ay ang ganda ng facilities ng isangs chool.Dito sa atin sa Pilipinas, maraming matatalinong bata kahit walang upuan ang classroom nila.Sa facilities pa lang ay talo na tayo dahil imbes na edukasyon ang may pinakamalaking porsiyento ng budget, napupunta ito sa militar.Kung utak lang ang pag-uusapan,pahuhuli ba ang mga Pinoy?
Why don’t you follow my footstep? It went to ADMU all the way from prep to graduate school (MA only), taught at DLSU-Manila for five straight years and found a Hispanic-Chinese girlfriend who obtained physical therapy from UP-Manila and Doctor of Medicine from UST. After seven years of going steady we finally settled down and are happily married. She’s a resident-physician at Mt. Sinai here at New York while I’m finishing my PhD at Columbia University and teaching part-time at Fordham University. You see, if you combine our experiences we’re affiliated with AdMU, UP, UST and DLSU 🙂

sa tingin ko, hindi natin dapat i-base yung quality ng education na ibinibigay ng university sa mga ganyang survey. hindi nga tayo sure na ACCURATE at CREDIBLE talaga yan e.
besides, hindi nga officially pumayag ang UP na magparticipate diyan dahil nga may mga issues na hindi nga credible ung THES-QS na yan e. pati yung ADMU, hindi masyadong sineseryoso ang mga ganyang bagay… jino-joke time nga nila ung PAASCU accreditation nila e…yan pa kaya na survey lang? haha. well..ung UST at DLSU, hindi ko lang alam.. haha.

I NEED HELP!
I passed both UP (BSBA) and ATENEO (BS Management). I passed DLSU (BS Int’l Business Studies) too but I crossed it out from my options since I live in QC. I am really torn between UP and ATENEO now. My mind is set on being part of the business community someday. So I want to ask your opinion about which is the better school as far as business courses are concerned.
Is UP the only university from the Philippines recognized abroad in both undergraduate and graduate programs? I read comment no.9 by ice and I am very concerned about this.
Do they have exchange programs too? I know that JGSOM in Ateneo has their Junior Term Abroad. Is this an advantage ( that is, if one qualifies for the JTA) ?Some colleagues of my dad said that if one is to consider ‘expanding the business network’, then Ateneo it is. Otherwise, they said that UP is still the better school. They told my dad that the slot in UP is so “precious” since the selection process is more rigid.
How about for graduate programs? Is it true that DLSU Business School is the best choice over UP and ATENEO (excluding AIM)? Is AIM the best among the best?
Please help. In UP, confirmation of decison to enroll will be from Feb 16 – (to something) already. ATENEO will be from March 10 – .

kailangan timbangin ang lahat ng factors (mga salik na may kinalaman sa pilipinas at taumbayan, hindi ang opinyon ng mga dayuhan) bago sabihin kung ano ang pinakamagaling–dami ng mga kurso; gaano namamaksimisa ang rekurso (fiscal, human, etc.); gaano karami ang kandidato sa mga licensure exams at passing percentages; kontribusyon ng eskwelahan sa lipunan at sa mundo. atbp.
sa maraming mga bagay, lamang ang mga private universities and some colleges sa up. (pwedeng isama rito ang mga ibang eskwelahan na lumalamang sa mga unibersidad na nabanggit sa mga board exams tulad ng mapua sa eng’g, fatima at plm sa medical courses, san beda sa law, lyceum sa foreign service, tc.) pero sa kabuuan and objectively speaking, sino ba naman ang seryosong magsasabing mas magaling ang mga ito kumpara sa up?
isa pa, ang up ang THE state university. kapag pinupulaan ito ng hindi pinoy dahilan sa anupaman, ang lahat ng pilipino ay dapat malungkot, magalit, manghinayang. salamin ng institusyon na ito ang ating lipunan–glory, problems and all. atin ang up, kahit hindi tayo nag-aral dito.

its really bothering though where on earth that this universities of our neighboring countries in south east asia surpass the most prestigious university in the philippines, UP. even if i not from this school i stil feel sorry for them and in our country. holy crap! nevertheless we need to be thankfull being in that top 500 is not easy. for ateneo and la salle its not all about the pretty penny its the mental capacity. go falcons..
I was torn between UP and Ateneo too when I had to decide already. I crossed out DLSU, UST and Mapua from my choices already even though I passed them, and they are really good schools too.
I ended up with Ateneo because I was put off by UP’s facilities. Well, for my course, that is. So really, I think that choosing schools depend on the course you want to take. Is it their specialty? Do they have sufficient equipment/facility for you course? Etc etc..
But you know, it boils down to one thing.
Deciding schools is up to yourself. Whatever school you go to, it’s you who will make the best out of the education you’ll get. It’s not the school you go to that gets the job, it’s the knowledge you digested all throughout.

Atenista ako ng 12 na taon (grade school at high school) bago ako nag-UP para sa kolehiyo. Masasabi ko na nung una eh ayoko talaga mag-UP, siyempre para masamahan ang mga kaklase ko na nag Ateneo lahat. Pero ngayon di na ako nagsisi na nag UP ako. Yung sinasabi mong student mix, naiintindihan ko yun.
May mga panahon na siyempre naiinggit din ako pag kinukuwentuhan ako na di kasing haba ang pila sa Ateneo kesa sa UP. Pero pag nakakasama ko naman ang dati kong mga kaklase, at kumain kami sa labas, napipikon sila sa mahabang linya. Ako naman, kaya ko maghintay at pumila. 🙂
Hindi madaling ilagay sa salita ang mga matututunan mo sa UP. Lalo na sa mga bagay na labas na ng classroom. Lalo na kung nanggaling ka sa private school. Napansin ko yun pag nagkikita kaming mga pumunta sa UP at mga pumunta sa Ateneo na high school classmates.
Mahal ko rin ang Ateneo dahil mas matagal ako run. Pero sa akin lang, mabuti pinili ko ang UP. Hindi ito maiintindihan nga mga taong hindi nag-UP kaya patawad.

Alam nyo,instead of mocking and throwing criticisms on each other (these 3 universities: UP.ADMU,&DLSU),why don’t you just look and find for ways on how you can develop yourselves and surpass other universities,if possible not only our neighboring countries but also other superior coutries. Puro kayo bangayan! Buti pa ang UST,Peace Oriented,hindi nakikihalubilo sa mga “bopols” na ipinaglalaban nyo. Asking why do I did said that,kung matatalino kyo hindi kyo magbabangayan,bagkus ang isang magaling na unibersidad ay aaksyon kaagad upang tugunan ang kanyang mga pagkukulang at maiangat ang kanyang sarili sa pedestal. Pero I’m still proud of these universities for what they have done to be world-class and well identified internationally. But not all the culprit should be blamed after you,but mostly it should be to the government of ours.
And besides,what can you expect naman from a western surveyor but to be biased to their own universities. Magpasalamat nlng tyo na at least napasama pa rin ung apat,naalis man ung dalawa sa 500,at least nasa 600 pa rin ang DLSU & UST,kaysa naman wala. Atenean ako, but really my first choice was UP and i was devastated dahil hindi ako pumasa. pero over time natanggap ko, and i’m very happy na nasa Ateneo ako. walang aircon at sobrang init, at medyo nakakairita na kelangan THE Ateneo ang tawag. pero masaya parin, maganda ang education at facilities. yeah mahal nga sha (middle class family kami), pero hindi naman kasi government-sponsored. unlike UP. what really puts everyone off sa UP (at marami na akong natanong dito) ay walang utang na loob ang students. pera na nga ng taong-bayan ang pinang-gagastos nila, ganyan pa ugali nila. i believe in free speech, pero sobra na minsan. yung girl na nag-interrupt kay GMA, ang bastos, we get that you hate her pero there’s a place and time for everything. bakit tinotolerate ng UP admin ang ganito?
and kelangan narin itigil ang rivalry sa UAAP, and OA na. nanood ako ng game nung nasa gradeschool palang ako, and Archer fan ako (up to now, kahit sa Ateneo nako nagaaral) at nasuntok ako ng Atenista!! (for the record girl ako) ang OA na ng rivalries, at ang weird na people are using basketball to say that their school is the best. that’s not the basis. laro lang yan. we’re supposed to be a Catholic country. and after reading some of the comments…grabe, i think i just lost faith in 50% of the population.

I’m from FEU, but I also prefer the education system of UP than any nother schools.
I am not happy because UP is in the Top 500 in the world its too low and downgrading position. We used to be on the Top 10 in Asia during the 70’s. Now we are left behind by our neigboring countries Japan, South Korea, Singapore, India, and China. I don’t want hear the excuses of our government officials and school administrators its “palusot” for not doing their job that they should render to the people particularly to the young generations of this country. We deserve more than in the Top 500. We should be at least in the Top 100 in the world not in Asia ha… In the world. That’s our dream not just UP and Ateneo but other schools too.
well, all i have to say i that i am still proud to be a Pinay..who came from the Philippines! we know in ourselves that the survey doesn’t really show who among in all of those universities are more likely to be the smartiest students and the most outstanding in the whole wide earth!…we know in our minds and hearts that we Filipino’s were really born to be different and do have different stuff’s that are stored in our minds. We cannot rate a person’s ability in just a piece of paper or how many thousand books and millions of word he has read all his life….that’s what i believe..how about yoou?for me,what’s the most important thing in this world is that our minds are open on what we call reality and truth about life and that Filipinos are still the best in everything but we admit that we are not perfect!that’s what a true honored student and a citizen is!!hahaha

Alam niyo rin ba that both UP, and Ateneo, not even a single Unversity sa Pilipinas na pumayag na sumali sa surveys na yan. According to a forum message posted at their website http://www.up.edu.ph that the survey should not be taken seriosly:
to quote: “In evaluating institutions, however, the THES-QS computes half of the index based on its reputation as perceived by academics (peer review, 40%) and global employers (recruiter review, 10%). Since it is not specified who were surveyed or what questions were asked, the methodology is obviously vulnerable to manipulation.”
“According to UP Vice President for Public Affairs Dr. Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, the University of the Philippines manifested its refusal to participate in THES-QS survey in writing as early as July 2007 because Times could not explain where it got the figures on which UP’s rank was based in 2006. In response to UP’s objection, however, Quacquarelli Symonds research assistant Saad Shabbir simply wrote back that if it did not receive the information by the deadline then it would be “forced to use last year’s data or some form of average.â€Â
Apparently for the QS researchers, old data would doâ€â€data that had been questioned precisely because its source was dubious. UP has not participated in any international survey of academic institutions since 2000. To date, the country’s National University has neither released official statistics for survey purposes nor consented to any survey undertaking by a local or international body.

I would just want to know from where do most Pinoys base it when they say Indonesia is less developed then the Philippines? I have been living in Jakarta now for some time and I am Filipino, most Pinoys here who have good positions in big companies do nor share the same idea about us being more developed then Indonesia, though I love our country so much but let’s face it we might be in the last of the list when it comes to development.I am just saying give credit where credit is due and Indonesia is developing faster then we or are we basing it with the fact that most Pinoys can speak English more then our Indonesian counterparts cause that is a lousy basis for being “developed”…elmer

As the University of the Philippines celebrates its 100th year of existence and prepares for more academic pursuits, it has denied having participated in the THES-QS SURVEY that appeared in broadsheets nationwide just recently. This is its press statement.
The broadsheet, PDI in particular, enumerated the 2008 university rankings recently released by the Times Higher Education Supplement [THES] & Quacquarelli Symonds [QS] as follows:
1. University of the Philippines [UP], from 398 in 2007 to 276 this year
2. Ateneo de Manila University [ADMU], from 401-500 to 254
3. De La Salle University [DLSU] was ranked 415th
4. University of Santo Tomas [UST] was ranked 470th
This is the 3rd year that such a survey has been conducted and its results given prominence by local dailies.
But according to UP Vice President for Public Affairs Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, UP has never agreed to participate in this survey.
In fact, this year, UP President Emerlinda R. Roman did not even receive an invitation to be a part of it nor did she receive any questionnaire to answer.
What she did receive was an email message from QS Asia Regional Director [Asia Pacific], Mandy Mok, informing her that UP had “gone up in the rankings†for 2008.
FurtherMore, the email also contained an invitation to buy “an attractive package†from THES-QS. The “package price,†which includes a banner on topuniversities.com, a full page full color ad in Top Universities Guide 2009, and a booth at Top Universities Fair 2009, amounts to $48,930.
Since UP was not invited to participate and therefore had not provided any data, UP officials do not know where and how the figures were obtained on which the ranking was based, Hidalgo said.
“UP can hardly be expected to spend more than 2 million pesos on publicity for itself involving a survey conducted by an organization that refuses to divulge where it obtains its data,†she added.
In 2007, UP was invited to participate in the survey, but when THES-QS refused to explain where it obtained the data used to determine UP’s rank in the 2006 survey, university officials decided not to accept the invitation to be part of the 2007 survey.
In 2006, UP was ranked No. 299, and Ateneo was ranked No. 500.
UP wrote THES-QS in July 2007, informing them of UP’s decision not to be a part of the survey; and again in September 2007, requesting the organization to respect UP’s decision.
In response, research assistant Saad Shabir wrote back saying that if it did not receive the information it would be “forced to use last year’s data or some form of average.â€Â
Surveys and rankings obviously have their usefulness. But, as the National University – status officially granted to it with its New UP Charter on its centennial year – UP feels that before it agrees to participate in such an exercise, it must carefully examine the indices by which it is to be evaluated. It also needs to be convinced about the reliability of the methodology used in the exercised.
The THES-QS ranking is supposedly meant to serve as “the definitive guide to universities around the world which truly excel.â€Â
In evaluating institutions it computes half of the index based on its reputation as perceived by academics [peer review 40%] and global employers [recruiter review 10%].
Since it does not specify who are surveyed or what questions are asked, the methodology is problematic.
In an earlier statement released in August this year, and carried by several national dailies, UP said: “Even peers require standardized input data to review.
But according to the International Ranking Systems for Universities and Institutions: A Critical Appraisal, published by BioMed Central, the Times simply asks 190,000 ‘experts’ to list what they regard as the top 30 universities in their field of expertise without providing input data on any performance indicators [http://www.biomedce ntral.com/ 1741-7015/ 5/30].
Moreover, the survey response rate among selected experts was found to be below 1%.
In other words, on the basis of possible selection biases alone, the validity of the measurement is shaky.†[See Pano, “Only Two RP Universities Made It…†UP Newsletter, August 2007, p. 5.]
According to the statement, the other half of the index is based on such indicators as student-to faculty ratio, the number of foreign faculty and foreign students in the university, and the number of citations in internationally accredited publications.
“Data for these indicators depend on the information that participating institutions submit. An institution’ s index may be easily distorted if it fails to submit data for the pertinent indicators, or if it chooses not to participate. â€Â

Medicine is UST’s specialization and yes, most UP college graduates are the ones populating UST Medical school. Most of these UP graduates who later transfer to UST graduated Cum Laude or above. I agree that in terms of a mix of students, UP is incomparable to Ateneo but in terms of more exposure to the real world, I disagree with that comment. When I started out in ateneo, I also had the same misgivings that there would be this so-called less exposure to the real world or being sheltered from the harsh realities of life but I guess it really depends on the student as well on how s/he plans to spend their college years. There are those who prefer to stick to their own “social” groups and then there are those who are more adventurous and would venture out with different and interesting people. There are also those who just study a lot and don’t grab the opportunity to join a student organization, attend school activities or seminars, etc.
it just saddens me sometimes to hear generalizations and narrow views not only of ateneo but all other universities in the philippines. i agree that all of this is a lot of hype. parents have this mentality of various universities because of the hype that’s created by the media and such rankings. i also agree that what’s important is coming out of these schools learning something but like your blog, this is only my personal opinion.
i also want to make another comment regarding foreign students. i think that philippine universities should promote and invite more international students, researchers and professors to their campuses. i know that this is already being done by a number of universities but compared to other overseas schools, the number is really minimal. i believe attracting them to our universities makes a lot of difference because they bring with them added knowledge that could help our country in research, etc.

All I can say is, among the BIG 4 (UP, ADMU, La Salle, UST) I think UST is the best. Why? Because it is the only University that opens doors of opportunities to everyone. Good or not good. Poor or rich. It is fair. Reasonable ang tuition fee nila unlike ng Ateneo na ang mahal mahal akala mo Harvard, same with La Salle. Yang mga schools na yan kasi, according to my grandpa who is a Filipino Linguistics expert who graduated in UP the teachers in the said self-proclaimed best universities such as Ateneo and UP are not exerting that much effort to mold their students and change them to be better. Why? Because they only accept “already good students”, eh kaya naman magaling dahil magagaling na ang mga tinatanggap. UST begs to differ, it takes the challenge to mold students and change them. They turn a lazy person into a hardworking one and a drunkard student into a Catholic preacher. Lastly, Tahimik ang UST sa mga pagalingan ng mga unibersidad na ito. UST is objective oriented and does not care about others’ statements. The fact na tahimik sila pero nakakapasok sa list ng top universities means that UST is humble and is MATURE! As for my closing statement, Ateneo is the best producer of corrupt leaders. Take NOGRALES (Atenista) for example. Isang sip sip na madaling pakainin ng pera ng pangulo at iba pa diyan. Look at LOZADA (a true Thomasian), alam niyang wala siyang mapapala pero he knows in his heart that what he did is his responsibility to his country. Now that is the best University. Yung hindi magagaling na ang tinatanggap kundi yung nagpapagaling ng dating hindi magaling. Yung nakakapagpabago ng puso at ng ugali, yung katamtaman lang ang lahat. Hindi masyado mahal at hindi masyado mahirap ang entrance exam pero the training is indeed hard. MaKIKICK out ka din kapag hindi ka nagbago at nag aral ng mabuti. UST is the most mature. UP at Ateneo kung ano ano pa sinasabi eh majority ng mga walang hiya nating Gov. Officials galing diyan sa mga yan. Pagalingan pa ng pagalingan eh sila din yung mga gumagawa ng mga tao na nakakapagpabagsak sa bansa natin. While UST on the other hand is trying to produce Godly and religous students that will fix the country. Lozada is a good example to look at. Keep on being silent UST for silence is humility and those who are humble will be put at the top. That’s a divine promise. That’s God’s promise. God Bless!

I’m an ESL teacher and have been teaching Koreans for a couple of years now. I had (and still have) several students who were graduates of Seoul National University (ranked 50th in the world), Korea Univ., and Yonsei. These are the top 3 Korean universities. For those who are affected by the result of the university rankings, this should not sadden you. Believe me, our universities are still way, way better in terms of curriculum. I had asked all my korean students who graduated from their top 3 universities, and you know what I discovered? Their curricula are not as good as ours. Their facilities may be more sophisticated but the kind of teaching methods and curriculum we have allow our students to analyze critically. Business students in those korean universities are not familiar with case analysis and feasibility studies/thesis. They didn’t even have practicum until recently some universities had included it in their curriculum. But ironically, for a long time, SNU has been topping the world ranking. They have too many MBA graduates but have shallow ideas. Imagine, they got accepted to the top universities in America, Australia and UK even without knowing how to solve a case analysis and prepare feasibility studies in college. There are many articles that you can find regarding their education. There are even comments from foreign teachers about their thinking abilities. This is not to insult Korea (even it’s people are dissatisfied with their educational system). I’m just trying to show and example and real picture. This world ranking is not really credible.
I had a homebased student (korean). She got accepted to Carnegie-Mellon University. I taught her for three months. She couldn’t write a decent essay because she didn’t know much about economy, politics, etc.(she would copy-paste all the articles in the internet as if i didn’t know); have limited vocabulary (despite the fact that she speaks English because she studied in America); and she has limited knowledge of the world. She’s 19 years old. In the Philippines, a 16-year old student already has vast knowledge of everyday issues.
To all students/graduates of Ateneo, La Salle, UP, UST and other high ranking Philippine universities hold your head up high. There are only two reasons why we were placed in the bottom: First, we don’t have money. In korea, they have oversupply of MBA graduates. Pero ka-level lang ng freshman sa UP ang utak. One of the criteria in the world ranking is the number of post graduates that a university has. Sadly, it’s not cheap to get a master’s degree in the Philippines. Second reason why we are in the bottom is that there are not much job opportunities in our country. Many graduates of our best schools end up unemployed or underemployed. In the world ranking, they also track the university’s record of producing graduates working as top executives of the top 500 corporations. Apparently, despite our being bright and talented, Filipinos are still discriminated that’s why only a few are given the opportunity to hold a high management positions in other countries. Those international companies have more regard to Asian nationalities who come from industrialized countries.
Actually, I have many facts to give based on my experience as an ESL teacher. But i choose to respect my students and the countries they come from.
To keep up with the world standard, I advise the students to harness their skills in math and science. If we can improve this, we can (re)gain our status as the center of education in Asia.

Well, regarding the THES-QS, its considered a garbage in several countries especially the USA. Common, UC Berkeley at 36 and Stanford, 17? What???
This survey has cunning business motives just like the annual USNEWS Ranking. That is, if you don’t cooperate, they will erode your rank and eventually, destroy your image. That’s what they want to do with UP (remember the package offer?).
Bottomline: The survey should never be taken seriously. In the first place how could UP be ranked when it did NOT PARTICIPATE?
Parang ganito lang yan: In a beauty contest, 3 candidates vied for the crown (ADMU, DLSU, and UST). Then coronation night came and the winners were: 1st-ADMU, 2nd-UP, 3rd-DLSU, 4th-UST.

I am a freshman from a ‘commoner’ university here in my province.
It really annoys me that this argument on which is better or who is the best leads the country into deeper nothingness. All of you are claiming that you have the laurel wreath in your heads and all the others are below you, not even worth of the comparison.
Ok.Each of us has a legacy to brag about, to show. Pero pag kami bang mga estudyante, regardless of our intellectual capacities, study habits and morals e guaranteed na magiging succesful pag sa isang particular na university o college kami grumaduate?
The Alma Mater you came from might be a factor, but the school itself is not the only issue for you to be accepted in your preferred job. Meron akong instructors na nanggaling sa UP, sa DLSU at sa UST, isa lang ang sinasabi nila; the transcript of records speaks for itself.
In my 4+ years at the green side and numerous stints outside the university in different competitions and activities with great students from other schools, I would say that hands-down UP, La Salle and Ateneo are the top schools here with a lot of other universities continuing to make a name for themselves. UST and the U Belt area schools have proven that they too, are also able to produce high-calibre students especially in degrees that leads to a board exam. I have also seen students from Holy Angel University in Pampanga, as well as U of San Carlos in Cebu do well in competitions with the top 3 schools. It really doesn’t matter where you come from, students just need to persevere and work hard to do well.
For those who are lost, depend on your chosen field instead of the school’s ranking or prestige since there is no school out there which have a perfect roster of good professors nor a perfect curriculum. I chose Applied Economics and Accountancy in La Salle over Management Engineering in Ateneo since I’d rather have two specializations than a more general perspective.
The only rankings that matter would be board exam results for degrees that have board exams on that field, otherwise, it would be really hard to compare especially if its Ateneo and La Salle since there would always be a lot of bias. Picks for business courses: economics, business ad and accountancy in UP, management courses and legal management in Ateneo; and Accountancy, Finance and Marketing in DLSU (these are recommended to be taken with economics as a second degree as it would really complement your chosen field).
I have noticed that most people from UP could not accept the fact that they were overtaken by Ateneo on university ranking. I admire UP but they should accept the result positively. What UP can do is to try its best to improve its standard of education esp. its facilities

Don’t blame Ateneo but instead give her the due credit, for the past few years Ateneo had indeed improved a lot in so far as academic is concern.

i’ve had classmates from ultra-far-flung places like Abra, Leyte, and Dubai.
madami ding international students.
iba-iba yung personalities. iba-iba yung views nila, at mga beliefs sa buhay.
i’ve had some of the most intellectually-satisfying class discussions sa UP. napaka-lively ng discussions. may mga class din na boring pero at some point, talagang magkaka-debate dahil inihahayag talaga yung mga views nila at likewise, may magre-react. maagalind din yung mga professor at open sila to corrections/contradictions.
lahat na ata ng uri nga tao meron sa UP. hahaha.
maganda rin na yung UP students exposed sa mga realities ng lipunan. hindi totoo na tinotolerate yung liberalism, in fact, madaming attempts yung administration na i-curtail yung freedom ng mga estudyante. talagang may struggle. so parang it’s up to the student kung ano gagawin niya–kung makiki-rally ba siya or magiging passive na lang–walang mag-i-impose sa kanya ng dapat gawin.
so parang it’s in your hands talaga kung ano ang kahihinatnan mo.
madami ding opportunities for extra-curricular development. nandiyan yung mga orgs, mga samu’t saring fora at film-viewings.
yung tution, ok naman. it’s sad na tumaas ito dahil mas madami nang di maka-afford lalo na yung from lower-income families. thankfully stfap bracket C ako at kahit papano nai-raraos ng parents ko ang expenses ng college education. though hindi pa rin talaga ako pabor sa tuition increase.
i think lahat naman ng institutions ay flawed. it’s good nga na may competition among universities, kasi competition is healthy. lalo lang napapaganda yung quality ng what a school has to offer as it tries to keep abreast with the rest of the competing schools.
hindi tama yung pagtalunan yung kung anong school yung mas maganda or hindi, kasi, lagi namang may taint ng bias mga judgements natin. 🙂
may kanya-kanyang advantages ang pag-aaral sa iba’t ibang universities.

be respectful to others when giving your opinion. because everyone of us doesn’t have the right criticize a certain school if we don’t have any proven proof.
One more thing, the behaviour of a certain student doesn’t reflect to that school where he/she belongs to. Its not the school’s problem (catholic or public or private) if the student doesn’t project themselves according to their school’s image.
Let us work on how to improve our tertiary education. Its a sad fact that Philippines has the most number of tertiary institutions but only four were being recognized internationally.
I dont belong to any Big 4 universities but for those who keeps on saying that it is only big 3, you guys think again.

I’ve been to DLSU Manila for MA, currently in Ateneo for PhD studies and my undergrad was in Xavier University, the Ateneo school in Cagayan de Oro City. I was able to attend some classes in UP last sem because my prof in Ateneo teaches the same subject in UP, and we sometimes have our classes in UP. I’m teaching in DLSU-Dasmarinas presently.
So friends, I know about these schools.
Each has its own strengths and weaknesses which everyone has discussed above. In the end, it all depends on the student. After receiving the course syllabus during the first meeting, if the student reads ahead of class religiously, it will no longer matter which school you are in, you’ll be smarter than the rest, and your teacher will know that when you speak in class. I should know, because as a college prof for about 10 years, I tend to grade students higher if they are able to show that they have read.

One more thing, the behaviour of a certain student doesn’t reflect to that school where he/she belongs to. Its not the school’s problem (catholic or public or private) if the student doesn’t project themselves according to their school’s image.
Let us work on how to improve our tertiary education. Its a sad fact that Philippines has the most number of tertiary institutions but only four were being recognized internationally.
I dont belong to any Big 4 universities but for those who keeps on saying that it is only big 3, you guys think again.

it saddens me whenever I read downgrading feedback coming from a fellow Filipino. Filipinos have so much to say against each other. For example, I’d read so many comments criticizing the English grammar of the writer, or the one who has just posted a comment. Another instance is comparing the local movies/drama to another foreign films, and then proceed to saying “hay naku walang kwenta ang Filipino movies”, and would even have the balls to say that other Asian actors are better looking than ours. Argghh.
This is all I can say, we are lucky because in the Philippines we have a lot of prestigious schools. If we graduate from the top 4 universities and start looking for a job, we not only compete with those graduates, but we find ourselves competing against many schools. Say, you are a UP or La Salle graduate, and the other applicants are from Don Bosco or Mapua, then you can’t be assured that you’ll get the job. Because, we know the calibre of the latter schools, especially when it comes to technical courses.
Let’s not downgrade our own. We are ONE. This attitude is the main reason why foreigners who come to our country are outrageously discriminating us. Simply because we look down on ourselves.
Should we not be proud that despite the lack of budget for our education, we still hear news every now and then that students from far flung provinces give pride to our country. In fact, many students from public schools in provinces are able to pass UPCAT, and students who graduated with honors from private schools in metro manila fail.
What I’m trying to say here is that, our educational system is still fair. As mentioned by those people who have posted their comments above ~ nasa estudiante pa rin ang success niya. If he studies hard and stays focus, then he will be rewarded with fair opportunities, regardless of the school he came from. Most companies now don’t put too much weight on the name of the school. They are after one’s ability.
And why do we take this world ranking seriously by the way? Our graduates are still the most sought after workers around the world. May it be white or blue collar jobs. We possess the right formula to become successful in and outside of the Phils: God-fearing, humble, witty, highly analytical, detailed, optimistic, patient, educated, fast learner, creative. What other nationalities have these all in one body? Tayo lang ang ganyan!
Try to think of it, pinakyaw na nga natin lahat. Do you guys realize that we produce one of the best workers in the world, such as: doctors, nurses, teachers, scientists/inventors, pilots, architects, engineers, IT, chefs, fashion designers, singers, seafarers,constructions workers, domestic helpers. Let’s all pull them out altogether. Gosh, the world business will be crippled. The economy will be senseless and life will be inutile without Filipinos.
God gifted us with a good heart, high IQ, and skills, while our country has produced for us many excellent schools to nurture our wisdom and intelligence.
We have everything. The only thing that we don’t have is the attitude of loving and appreciating the Filipino in us.

I’m from Letran by the way but I have so much respect from people who have studied in UP, AdMU, DLSU and UST. Indeed, in our society, they are much favored in JOB Fairs. Since we are in the season of job hunting, a lot of graduates of these 4 schools were hired already. and others were on waiting list.
Autonomy and Deregulation
In an effort to rationalize its supervision of institutions of higher learning, CHED has also prescribed guidelines for granting privileges of autonomy and deregulation to certain schools. According to the guidelines, the general criteria examined by CHED are an institution’s “long tradition of integrity and untarnished reputation,†“commitment to excellence,†and “sustainability and viability of operations.â€Â
Autonomous status
Autonomous status allows universities to design their own curricula, offer new programs and put up branches or satellite campuses without having to secure permits, confer honorary degrees, and carry out operations without much interference from CHED. Aside from all host state colleges and universities and other chartered public universities, such as the University of the Philippines, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, and Mindanao State University, a number of private schools have also been granted autonomous status. “The 100th year of the University of the Philippines is a time for a series of big parties, oblation runs, centennial lectures, a Big Dome Alumni homecoming, several theatrical extravaganzas and of course the Mother of all Lantern Parades to close the year.
Not even a typhoon could stop the Alumni homecoming. But the only lowdown could be that UP once more failed to make it to the final four of the UAAP basketball tourney (Ateneo won!). Oh well we can look forward to the bicentennial for that.
At the risk of being called as the centennial party pooper, I will have to dish out criticisms not of my own but that of an American professor that the UP invited to do a critique in 1947. The destructive war just behind it, UP under President Bienvenido Gonzales invited Professor Harley Harris Bartlett of the University of Michigan to critique the university, its priorities and the state of higher education in the Philippines. Bartlett an eminent botanist and Southeast Asian scholar; in his convocation address to the university, identified key areas that UP should focus, namely research and strengthening graduate programs . Bartlett believed that by doing so, the Philippines can kick start its development by laying the foundations of what we now call a “knowledge based economyâ€Â. Bartlett wanted a university that cuts across academic disciplines or what we now call as “interdisciplinarityâ€Â. Bartlett also envisioned a more international university.
Bartlett noted problems that have bedeviled UP since 1908 and up to the present. He noted that UP was losing its best profs, the low professors’ salaries, its obsession with increased state subsidy, Malacanang’s meddling in the Board of Regents, its ungrateful alumni (who refuse to give generously), abuse of academic freedom, and of course, the lack of a research culture. Bartlett’s prescription was like that of corporate restructuring; make UP competitive, make sure the best profs stay and kick out the mediocre ones, get external funds, focus on science and technology, improve graduate programs and make the university more autonomous.
Bartlett didn’t say it but from the context of the speech he really means to have a new UP charter. Even in 1947, the 1908 charter was oudated. If Bartlett were alive in 2008, he would wonder how come it took UP 61 years to have a new one.
Bartlett’s criticisms were respectfully taken but largely were not acted upon. The Philippines was a prostrate nation and America exacted onerous conditions for aid. UP was cash strapped.It is understandable why UP started to lag behind US and European universities at this time.
The professor’s critique is significant since UP’s weaknesses is also the weakness of Philippine higher education. Bartlett was livid in his critcism of the Bureau of Higher Education (the grandaddy of CHED) for giving university status to “diploma mills†that sprouted after the war. These private universities were given substantial autonomy and they did pirate many UP profs. Many of these “universities†offered only law programs and Bartlett was aghast that as a result, the Philippines would have an oversupply of lawyers. This would be a tragedy for the nation. If the nation were to succeed, Bartlett wanted an oversupply of scientists, engineers and good teachers.
These diploma mills were unlike Santo Tomas, Ateneo de Manila, De La Salle and Silliman. These schools had good reputations as teaching colleges. Bartlett believed that they didn’t compete with UP but helped UP in its work. (How about that? Schools don’t compete but collaborate! Ateneo helps De La Salle and vice versa!)
Bartlett then throws Filipinos the question. What is the value of the University of the Philippines to your nation?
The fortunes of the Republic is mirrored in the fortunes of UP. And in this centennial year, it doesn’t look good. Bartlett writes that UP is really a barometer of our people’s committment to democratic ideals. That the elite fails to give generously to UP (and public education) really betrays their lack of faith in these ideals. Public education then as now is the best way for people to lift themselves out of poverty. It is the best way of empowerment. But Bartlett predicted that this won’t happen. He predicted the spiralling cost of fees as education became a profitable business. And in its centennial year, UP is guilty too. I have known students (kids of government employees of SSL grades 15 and below) who have to drop out since they can’t fork out the 21K a sem fees.
Thus we have the anomaly that the people have private education as a first option (even if they have little means) then public if there isn’t any choice.
As for the teaching problem, Bartlett noted the anomaly that there were few assistant professors since many of them left UP. Today there are departments with one or two assistant professors and a lot of senior tenured professors (and a lot of instructors who have no postgraduate qualifications). These top (or bottom) heavy departments (and they are many of them in all of UP’s constituent campuses) with their frustrating politics tend to drive the juniors out of the campuses. This reduces the university’s competitiveness since it is the junior professors that churn out the best research and most innovative teaching.
The College of Science in Diliman is one of the few exceptions. Its professoriate is composed of all PhDs many of which are world class in their fields. The junior to senior professor ratio is respectable. The college is not exempt from the problem of attracting newly minted and young PhDs. The PhDs that were sent overseas in the 1980s and returned are now in mid-career as associate professors and professors. In 10 to 20 years we could expect some if not many to seek early retirement. Thus there is a need to attract young PhDs to the faculty. The science professors are experts in their fields but many fields have only one or two PhDs. We need teams of experts if we want to launch the Philippines into a science and knowledge based economy as Ateneo’s Father Nebres pointed out in his centennial lecture.
Despite these signs of progress which are uneven. UP has difficulty attracting new and young PhDs to staff its colleges as assistant professors. In some cases, a department in one UP campus has no choice but to “poach†a professor from another UP campus where the politics has become unbearable. This shows the dire straits the university is in. Also academic freedom has been abused and even Bartlett noticed this. Academic freedom has been made an excuse for lousy teaching and research. In his centennial lecture, Randy David defined the real sense of academic freedom and this includes profs showing up for class prepared!
UP may have to address its own way of doing things and its structure. It has to institute reforms to make the university competitive and in an academic community with petrified ideologies, we can expect that this would be met with strong resistance. I believe that the kind of nationalism that pervades the UP ethos is retrogressive. The idea of the university never limited itself to a certain class or nationality despite the sectarian origin of universities. Universities are meant for all who qualify for admission. If UP wants to be a University for Filipinos, it has to be a university for all, even non-Filipinos.
Reforming and reorienting UP may take a decade or even hundred years. The 2008 Charter gives the opportunity and the difficulty. President Emerlinda Roman, I believe is keenly aware of these. The work does not end with the centennial year and Roman’s term, it will continue with her successors. Thus we have to pay tribute to UP’s American founding presidents, Murray Bartlett, and Guy Potter Benton, and also to its first Filipino president, Ignacio Villamor. These gentlemen faced gargantuan challenges which are essentially what Emerlinda Roman faces today.
The UP needs a real peer review. It has invited its outstanding alums and academics from other Philippine universities to give their critique like what Ateneo’s president did. But we have to remember that what ails the UP in many ways ails other universities. That’s why I believe we have to take seriously the international university ratings where UP never got into the top 100. While the methodology of these surveys isn’t perfect, it reflects to a large extent how competitive the university is.
When Bartlett gave his lecture, the Republic was young and even when faced with the ravages of war, it had optimism. Will the celebrations of the centennial provide the optimism that matters, or is this ephemeral?
Also can the UP still have the sense and objectivity to invite an American professor to give it peer review

MANILA, Philippines – Four Philippine schools have made it to the Top 200 Asian Universities list of the Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd. (QS.com) for 2009.
Leading the Philippine schools was the University of the Philippines (UP), which shared No. 63 spot with Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee of India, Osaka City University of Japan and Universitas Gadjah Mada of Indonesia.
De La Salle University (DLSU) was 76th, Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) was 84th, while the University of Santo Tomas (UST) shared 144th spot with Nanjing Agricultural University of China.
Japan had the most number of schools in the list at 58, including 10 in the top 20 ranks.
South Korea was next with 46 universities, of which three were in the top 20, while China had 39, including two in the top 20.
Taiwan had 15; India, 11; Thailand and Indonesia had 8 each; and Malaysia, 6.
Hong Kong also had only six, but four were in the top 20, three of which occupied the 1st, 2nd and 4th slots.
Singapore had only two universities in the list, but both were in the top 20 slots.
Occupying the Top 10 slots were:

3. University of Tokyo (Japan);
4. Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HK);

Results of the first QS.com survey was officially released on Tuesday.
Managing Director Nunzio Quacquarelli said the results of the Asian University Rankings focus on regionally relevant measures of excellence, with the top performing universities distinguished not only by quality, but also by high productivity of research, compared to their regional peers.
While the Philippine universities were way below the rankings, QS Managing Director Nunzio Quacquarelli had this to say: “Philippines universities have performed well, with high recruiter review scores. These results make study in the Philippines an attractive option for international students studying abroad,â€Â
Quacquarelli said QS based the first ever top Asian universities list on regionally relevant measures of excellence, selecting schools noted not only for quality, but also for high research productivity compared to the institution’s regional peers.
The ranking of Asian universities used to be done yearly by Asiaweek, a Hong Kong-based English newsmagazine, which folded up in December 2001 due to a downturn in advertising revenues.
Subject rankings
When it came to the 2009 Asian university subject rankings, University of the Philippines (UP) rose to the 12th spot under Arts and Humanities, while ADMU, DSLU, and UST got the 19th, 44th, and 55th slots respectively.
Under Life Sciences and Biomedicine, UP was 47th, ADMU was 52nd, DSLU was 79th, and UST was 85th.
The Social Sciences list placed UP as 22nd, ADMU as 28th, DSLU as 51st, and UST as 75th.
In subjects under Information Technology & Engineering, UP ranked 63rd, ADMU was 64th, and DSLU was 79th.
Under Natural Sciences, ADMU took the 24th spot, UP got the 32nd, UST got the 94th, while DSLU placed 97th.
The THE-QS 2008 world’s top 500 universities rankings had raised eyebrows when ADMU overran other Philippine schools in the top 500 list by rising from somewhere between 401st and 500th in 2007 to 254th, edging out UP which ranked 398th in 2007 and fell to 276th the next year.
DLSU and UST ranked 415th and 470th respectively.
UP officials earlier doubted the survey’s credibility, since the organizers refused to disclose where it acquired the data used, thus making the methodology “problematic.â€Â
Officials also revealed the “business side†of the survey where QS sold its various services to help universities improve rankings.
On the other hand, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) refused to comment on the rankings, pointing out that Chairman Emmanuel Angeles, who also presides over the UP Board of Regents, was out of the country.
QS research chief Ben Sowter said “the advantage of regional rankings is in the richer picture we can create when comparing universities at a regional rather than global level, through the inclusion of additional factors.â€Â
Sowter added that the shift to a regional focus proved to be significant, “The position of institutions in Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore was to be expected, but the stronger performance of South Korean institutions in contrast to the world rankings suggests a strength known in the region that has yet to be fully acknowledged globally.â€Â

This forum was created to exchange views regarding the site owner’s concern about the tertiary education. It’s a sad fact that it became a battle ground of school bashing and trash talking.
Those people who claim that they are a graduate of one of the so called “big 3 universities” were posting comments as if they didn’t study in those prestigious universities. Kindly act according to your school’s image, make your alma mater be proud of you. I know for a fact that UP, ADMU and DLSU train their students to be morally upright citizens of the country. Our country does not need arrogant people. You were given a chance to study in those universities, treasure it by setting an example and not by degrading other people. We may belong to different schools but we are all Filipinos.
It’s a sad fact that in our neighboring countries like Singapore and Malaysia, their government is investing large amount of funds in upgrading their educational system. Among South East Asian countries, Singapore is outstanding in regards with their education system. In our country, out of 1,000 students who enter Grade 1, only 120 will finish college. The 880 students will drop out along the way. (Philippine Statistical Yearbook 2007) Mind you people, out of those 120 people who can finish college, only 5 of them came from the poorest of the poor. Education in the Philippines is becoming a privilege and not a right. So please be thankful that you were able to graduate from college and not degrading other people.
Enough of assuming things regarding other universities, especially if you can’t support it with real facts; like what you are doing with other universities that you didn’t enroll. First with UST, enough of making assumptions with its academic performance and students, It’s a fact that UST is not the country’s top rank university but still one of the best. Being the country’s fourth best university is not bad. If the so called “Big 3 universities” does not exist, it will be the country’s top university.
UP, ADMU and DLSU maybe the country’s premiere universities, but still not comparable to those Ivy League institutions in the US; Oxford and Cambridge in the UK, please don’t be that confident enough about your school. In the recent international rankings of world’s best universities, our own universities ranked poorly. Some critics may claim that some rankings are questionable but still it reflects how our government is investing in the education sector of our country.
According to CHED, there are over 2,016 registered institutions of higher learning in the Philippines. It’s the biggest number in the South East Asian region. Our country has 1,494 private universities and colleges as well as 522 public universities and colleges. So, being in the top 20 in the country is something that is very remarkable to a certain institution. However, the present number of our higher learning institutions is too much on the number of students in the country. Meaning, some schools that are diploma mills should be abolished because they hinder the progress of our country’s higher education system.
Speaking of the recent ranking of the top 20 universities in the country, it shows that more universities in the province are performing well than the universities in NCR. I have to congratulate St. Louis University in Baguio City as the country’s top provincial university in the third spot behind UP Diliman and UST respectively. As a matter of fact, St. Louis University garnered a number of CoE’s and CoD’s from CHED while FEU (Far Eastern University – Manila) doesn’t have any CoE and CoD status from CHED. Can we say that St. Louis University is better than FEU? I also have to congratulate the University of San Carlos in Cebu, Silliman University in Dumaguete and Mindanao State University for their outstanding academic performance. They are proofs that quality higher education can be found in selective provinces throughout the country.
UST was branded as the country’s top university in terms of board exam results in the recent ranking of the PRC. UP System got an 85.7% over all passing rate followed by UST with 80% over all passing rate. UP Diliman participates in 20 licensure examinations; UST participates in 19 licensure examinations while ADMU participates in 3 licensure exams and DLSU participates in 7 licensure exams. PRC administers 49 different licensure exams from technical to health science courses. Meaning, we can say that UST can claim its dominance in the licensure examinations among private universities.
UST and DLSU are tied with the most number of CoE’s and CoD’s among private universities. Both school’s have 16 (each) recognitions. On the other hand, San Beda College is one of our country’s good institutions of higher learning. But please be reminded that the Dominicans helped the Benedictine Monks in establishing Colegio San Beda in 1901. In recent history, San Beda College seeks help to UST Museum of Arts and Sciences regarding the establishment of San Beda’s own museum.
Some non Thomasians even wondered why despite UST’s long history, it was only in the twentieth century that they expanded into a full pledged university. According to a historian from the National Historical Institute of the Philippines, during the Spanish era, UST was prohibited by the government to offer various courses since the Spaniards had this belief that if Filipinos were given so many options of courses to take up to. They might end up becoming more intelligent than the Spaniards and ignite war against them. It was only during the American period that they start to offer various courses since the Americans are more open minded than the Spaniards.
I’m not a Thomasian myself so maybe some of you are wondering why I know so much about UST. I’m a history professor at the PUP College of Arts in Santa Mesa, teaching history in the AB History program of the college. It’s just that it suddens me if someone degrades UST despite being the country’s fourth best university. How about those schools behind UST in the academic performance? What if someone said that CEU is the best university in the country? Would you react violently? Kindly know the word RESPECT and HUMILITY. The reason why our country is not progressing is because Filipinos doesn’t practice HUMILITY and RESPECT to one another. If you don’t have anything good to say, just stop posting immature comments. Act like an educated person.
I totally agree with you. There is no need for school bashing. I live in Cambridge UK and I have met a lot of students from the University of Cambridge who doesn’t brag about the fact that they are studying in a very prestigious institution (the Brits find that very vulgar!) UST is one of the most prestigious universities in our country and no matter what ranking it has, nobody can deny that fact. BTW, I am not a Thomasian.

for your information mr. wiseman, i passed the UPCAT last two years ago in my first choice campus which is the univeristy of the philippines-manila and for your information also, the UP-M has the highest upg cut-off score. I also passed the ACET and DLSUCET but still chooses the University of Santo Tomas because of the values they imbued to their students and the highest quality education they offers. In abroad those who graduate from UP are the ones who get immediate recognition. At the local job hunting scene, there are companies that would want to hire only the graduates of Ateneo, Dela Salle, UP and UST.
Intellectually, the students from these universities are the ones who are ready to compete with the rest of the world and locally they are the ones who are given priority. I’m not a graduate from these four universities and I did have my own share of experience that people treat you differently when they find out that you matriculated from this Big Four. As someone I know would used to say there are only three universities in the Philippines- UP and the Big Three, The Others and God Knows Where. In other words if you didn’t get your education from the Big Four, you don’t stand a chance.
But then, does it matter now if you graduate from these top caliber schools? What if a person isn’t born with all the intellectual capacity expected of him? Is intellect the only way to succeed or does the choices a person makes in his life matter more? What if the person isn’t born with a silver spoon?
In this country where only those who could afford those horrendous tuition fees and those who are privileged to exist in those few elite circles, they are the ones who could easily carved their own niche. Few people who are able to gain entrance in Ateneo, La Salle, UST and UP are the ones who are given the opportunity to shine.
The way I see it, in the conversations and discussions of the intellectual and the elite culture in the Philippines, those who didn’t graduate from the Big Four do not qualify and quantify to the development of the nation- they are hardly mentioned but then what about those millions of Filipinos working abroad whose struggles and success ensured the survival of the nation? Nurses, engineers, teachers, doctors and other professionals, even domestic helpers? And those millions who still chose to serve here despite the difficult economic conditions? Were they all graduates of the Big Four? Did the names of their schools matter when they applied for their respective jobs? Or is it through their determination, dedication, ingenuity and initiatives that they were able to get to where they are?
So we do have a problem with the quality of our education that stems from the inefficiency of our own government and the incompetence of those who are supposed to make education accessible to all. We do really need to work harder in order to find better ways of improving the logistics of our educational system. For now I think that the problem doesn’t stem only on the corruption of our government but with the way the elite and the less privilege think of each other and treat each other.
I mean does this make me a lesser person because I am not a product of the Big Four?
I think that there’s an even bigger problem here. It’s not only poverty, it’s not only crab mentality- it’s called discrimination and that bias attitude. Again as I see it and even experienced it, there is this exclusive club of measuring success and intellect according to what is perceived by those who are from the Big Four.
It’s not that I am griping against those who entered these prestigious schools but the majority of the country’s population didn’t come from here and yet they are alive and well, with a sound mind and willingness to accomplish many things.
In these difficult times, the question is do you what it takes to serve your country? Is your character beyond reproach? Those are the things being asked and expected. Are you strong and sane enough to handle and withstand the unpredictable turns of life?
I know many people who didn’t graduate from the Big Four and they are all leading successful and productive lives. They are those you get to meet everyday but what is it that makes them different- simple- the DESIRE, THE DEDICATION, THE DETERMINATION and their DECISION to be better.
In the words of my Alma Mater, WINNERS ARE MADE NOT BORN.
