Aging gracefully and laughter definitely mix

That was a wonderful two week vacation with my siblings. I just arrived from the US after helping my sister in her campaign bid to win a council member seat in her city. She won the seat but that’s another blog entry in the next few days. I had so much fun meeting her friends, cheering myself through the mini-rallies and just enjoying my time with my siblings. I met Nellie, one of her supporters who loved to wave to the residents as they passed by us. She smiled , waved and cheered. What an inspiration she was during those chilly, windy mornings when I was bundled up in 5 layers of clothing.
During one of our parties, she proudly told me she has 7 children, all from one husband. Having 7 kids is nothing new to me because my friend Dine has 7 kids too. Then she added “…and thirty grandchildren. I am a great grandmother too”. I was really surprised because Nellie looks so young. She said she was only 63 years old, just 10 years older than me.

I didn’t have to ask her secret for her youthful looks. Her natural laughter and sense of humor was just amazing. I am a firm believer that humor is important. It helps us deal with the stresses of life, is a form of pure enjoyment and taps our creativity and “funny bone.” I love to laugh and often drag my husband to laugh with me even if he doesn’t find it funny. There is a tendency to use humor to deal with the negative side of aging such as making fun of my senior moments.
Our sense of humor is a great coping mechanism that assists us to age successfully and maintain a level of happiness. It also helps me to connect with others and just enjoy those around us. Laughing has such wonderful health benefits.
I am only 53 years old but I will make sure aging gracefully is a way of life. It means staying active, utilizing coping skills, and maintaining a positive attitude to overcome the challenges I face.
