Check out this beautiful song for the Papal visit. The lyrics resonate the message of mercy and compassion, the theme of Pope Francis visit.

“A little bit of mercy makes the world less cold and more just.” – Pope Francis

Official Theme Song for the 2015 Apostolic Visit of Pope Francis to the Philippines

Do you see these children on the streets?
Have you walked the pavements where they sleep?
Do you feel their hands when you give them alms?
Did you ever give them bread to eat?
Have you seen their homes washed by the floods?
While a mother tightly holds her child
Do you hear the wind of the raging storm?
Can you tell them where it’s coming from?
Let us show our love and mercy
With true kindness and humility
For the God loves the weak and the needy
Just like you and me
We are all God’s children we are all the same
He is calling us by name to help the poor and lame
And learn what life is really for
It’s to know and love and serve the Lord

we are all god's children papal visit

Stand together and let’s do our part
Hear their voices mend their broken hearts
Choose to be brave fight for their rights
Give them back their honor and their pride
Please do not be blind and just leave them behind
To struggle in darkness or give them empty promises
We are all God’s children we are all the same
He is calling us by name to help the poor and lame
And learn what life is really for
It’s to know and love and serve the Lord
It’s to know and love and serve the Lord
It’s to know and love and serve the Lord

Jesus’ attitude is striking: we do not hear the words of scorn, we do not hear words of condemnation, but only words of love, of mercy, which are an invitation to conversation. “Neither do I condemn you; go, and do not sin again.” Ah! Brothers and Sisters, God’s face is the face of a merciful father who is always patient. Have you thought about God’s patience, the patience He has with each one of us? That is His mercy. He always has patience, patience with us, He understands us, He waits for us, He does not tire of forgiving us if we are able to return to Him with a contrite heart. “Great is God’s mercy,” says the Psalm.

Mothers will do everything to save their child. Veronica Nyamod must have been so tired, walking wearily for more than four hours just to bring her frail one-year-old son , Stephen Nyamod to a clinic near Reke, South Sudan. A BBC report wrote a story on a South Sudanese village two months ago where mothers and children resorted to eating water lilies . South Sudan faces a food crisis. A clinic run by the International Rescue Committee has been treating up to 16 children every week ever since 1.1 million people including 550,000 children were forced to flee their homes due to the fighting between government and rebel forces.

Despite the treatment that Stephen received from the clinic, he failed to show signs of improvement. Stephen weighs only 5kg (11 pounds) and has been losing weight. Such a heartbreaking image of a child who weighs just as much a three month old baby. His mother tries to soothe him as he cries at the doctor’s clinic.

“I only want him to get better. I am lucky we got to the clinic in time. We didn’t have enough food back in the village. There are so many other sick and malnourished children there”, the mother was quoted in a BBC report.

The warning signs were everywhere. The conflict forced famers to flee their homes and now missed the planting season. The United Nations Security Council expressed “grave concern” about the situation and described it as “currently … the worst [food insecurity situation] in the world.”

When you hear such terrible news, one begins to ask is there anything one can do?

Action is being taken now before it is too late.

UNICEF ,the world’s leading advocate for children warned that up to 50,000 children could die of malnutrition by the end of 2014 if they do not receive help.

UNICEF and partners have screened more than 60,000 children against malnutrition and immunised more than 260,000 children against measles, which can be deadly in an emergency.

UNICEF aims to distribute hygiene kits and safe water for cooking and drinking to 450,000 displaced people . UNICEF is also providing safe places for children to learn and play, and reuniting children separated from their families. There is so much work to be done and UNICEF can’t do its work without your help.

Children are dying. More will die soon if we turn our backs on their pleas for help. You can help the vulnerable children with the care and resources they need to survive this food crisis in South Sudan . Every donation will go a long way .

I begged to be excused from my sister and my ten-year old nephew after we watched a stage play “Rak of Aegis” yesterday.

Me: “I have to review the draft of our impeachment complaint”.

Nephew: “Who is getting impeached?”

Me: “The President”

Nephew: “Whaatt? You are going to impeach the President? Won’t you get jailed for that?”

And so, I dedicate the filing of the impeachment complaint to my nephew and the young ones who will one day become the taxpayers of the Philippines.  “For putting himself above the Supreme Court and the Filipino People, I am attaching my signature to the Impeachment complaint of Benigno Simeon Cojuanco Aquino III as President of the Republic of the Philippines.

Dear nephew,

Let me attempt to make this simple. I am sure you have read the fairy tale of the “Emperor’s New Clothes”.  Here is a re-make of the story that my fellow advocates came up with.

Emperor's new clothesWe begin with a fairy tale just as we always do when leaders begin their rule. Four years ago, in a place by the river, an Emperor arrived, promising to take his subjects on a straight, righteous path. He waved a hand and asked trusted aides to weave him a magnificent cloak with the emblems of his rule.

And so the aides went to work, spinning invisible threads on looms, to produce the Emperor’s new garb. And he was pleased and called it DAP.

The Emperor donned his new clothes and raised both arms to bless cheering subjects lined on the highway. “DAP! DAP!”, his courtiers yelled.

No one could see anything but his flesh. “No clothes! No clothes!” The chant went up. But no one among his minions would confess to the fakery and deception lest they fall out of the mighty ruler’s grace. And so the Emperor’s parade trudged on….

The Disbursement Acceleration Program is the modern-day “Emperor’s New Clothes.” It took the Supreme Court, ruling unanimously and unequivocally, to expose DAP for what it truly was – an unconstitutional mechanism that President Benigno Simeon Aquino III deliberately and repeatedly used to undermine the separation of powers of the various branches of government, destroy the system of checks and balances of the republic, violate various laws and betray the people’s trust.

In the fairy tale, it was a child in the crowd , just like you, “who was too young to understand the desirability of keeping up the pretense, blurts out that the Emperor is wearing nothing at all and the cry is taken up by others. The Emperor cringes, suspecting the assertion is true, but continues the procession.”

You are only ten years old and are powerless to stop the procession so I am doing this for you…for the future of our country.

You might ask, “why not wait for 2016? He has only two years left”.

It is a matter of principle. it is a matter of seeking accountability. It does not depend on the numbers in congress. Impeachment is the legal way to make a President accountable for “culpable violation of the Constitution, treason, bribery, graft and corruption, other high crimes, or betrayal of public trust.”

uphold the constitution

You must have known, that the President took an oath of office where he promised to “preserve and defend its Constitution, execute its laws, do justice to every man, and consecrate myself to the service of the Nation.” The President is immune from suit and the only way to hold him accountable is through impeachment – a constitutional process.

We will present evidence that Aquino knowingly and wilfully violated the Constitution through his acts of approving and implementing the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) .

We will prove that from the onset, Aquino had sought to control billions in public funds and treat the same as presidential pork.

We will prove that the DAP is no different from Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) in the sense that both pertain to discretionary lump sum spending. Check this out.

DAP-infographic2 (1)

The DAP is not just a disbursement policy gone wrong. It is an attempt by the President to grab for himself the powers held by Congress. It is an insidious scheme to build up a gargantuan pork barrel fund for the President that dwarfed the combined PDAF of legislators.

Through the DAP, the President laundered billions of public money to activities that are by and large either corrupt, corruption- prone, favored, or cannot be accounted for.

The impeachment complaint is the only means for seeking accountability, which has long been due, because no one wants to truly come clean about the DAP. Not the President. Not his men. Not the politicians that gained from his illegal and unconstitutional acts.

To answer your question, I won’t get jailed for this.

Filing an impeachment complaint by a blogger like myself has been done in the past. It is the right thing to do. Atty. Edwin Lacierda (now Palace Spokesperson), then a blogger in 2008 was part of an impeachment complaint versus Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo:

lacierda

As a blogger, it was an honor to have my signature affixed on this document. Whatever the consequences are, we need to show our country that we have an incumbent president who has failed to honor the “take care” clause in the Constitution, sacrificing the country’s interest in favor of her own political ambitions and must of consequence, be held accountable to the ills she has cursed this nation with.

Manolo Quezon (now a Communications UnderSecretary) led the bloggers in this 2008 impeachment .

manolo quezon filed impeachment in 2008

“…The question is not who we will replace the President with, but to find the President guilty or not guilty of the charges pressed against her. Not the least of which is the charge that she deceived the public – and compromised the integrity and sovereignty of the Philippines – through the BJE MOA-AD. If she is, I believe that she should face the fair and just consequences of her actions. I believe that justice is not about personalities, but about doing the right thing.”

Marocharim , a political blogger added:

marocharim on 2008 impeachment

…I was just doing what any free-thinking Filipino will do. I was just doing things out of principle. I signed that document because of my convictions, not for money, not for ambition. I’m just a twenty-something who makes an honest living.
I signed that document because I believe that it is right, and I believe that it is time. Revolution? To some, yes, but to me, it was a simple matter of doing the right thing.

You might be wondering “So you want Vice President Binay” to be President?

See, the impeachment is not about getting Binay to be President, in the same way that People Power 2 in EDSA was not about making Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, President. Those worried about Binay becoming president are also saying that the impeachment has no chance of getting the numbers in congress. My friend, Mae told me “I always say I will follow the law. … I will not fear the future when all I have is NOW.  And now is the perfect time to IMPEACH. when citizens are alive and vigilant, BINAY is not to be feared! In fact opportunity!”

Some of my friends may doubt my motivation. Deng, another friend gives me comfort ” stay as who you are with your conviction and vigilance… and your critics will fail in their attacks of putting labels and colors and doubts in your intents.. because the only agenda you have is rooted for your love of country, fellowmen, family via means of seeking the truth and jurisprudence,… that way, it is easy to convince people the need to participate….”. I love you Deng.

I know it won’t be easy and it could be a long shot. Who said change was easy anyway? It isn’t easy to get out of our comfort zone. Some of us may be jaded or disillusioned because the People Power Revolution failed to bring us to real change and recovery. I continue to hope and hope for the sake of your future, my children’s future, and the future of their children.

It’s not easy to make a stand but I believe in doing the right thing.

Take care and study well.

Love,

Tita Noemi

head lamp

Typhoon Glenda left more than 20 hours ago and as I type this , there is still no power where I live. Over the radio I heard that 19% of Metro Manila do not have electricity. I should count my blessings that there is not much property damage compared to the Milenyo wrath in 2006. I was ready for power interruption because in 2006, we did not have power for more than two days. I relied on coffee shops .

When your business is dependent on internet service, a day without it is problematic. Two days without it gets to be “near critical”. Where does one get an internet connection when the whole city has no power? I managed the first 24 hours . To go around the house, I wore this headlamp. I look like a miner but it is so convenient that one can even use this at the dinner table for light.

headlamp rechargeable

If you are interested, this BAILONG rechargeable LED Lamp can be found at 888 in Divisoria .  It is also water proof and can act as a hazard light. At bulk price, it is around 550 pesos. Thanks to #SafePH, an advocacy of Smart telecom, for this little gift which was part of a larger disaster kit. I will share more photos as soon as I have power.

ultra saving mode from samsung galaxy tab s

With limited Globe and Smart mobile internet, I still managed to post updates on twitter and facebook. It was erratic though. I am glad my Samsung Galaxy Tab S has ultra saving power. The display is black and white . Who needs color? I am using the Tab S to check typhoon updates and share it with my social media network.

akari rechargeable lamp

I am glad I got to buy this Akari Rechargeable lamp at the HandyMan for 2,000 pesos.  Aside from the lamp, there is an  AM and FM radio as well as a fan. Despite the winds, I felt hot inside my room. The fan lasted me for 7 hours using it off and on. The radio was quite useful too since it gave me continuous stream of information.  This morning I had to go to my car to charge my mobile internet and other gadgets.

charging inside the car 1

The light accessory can charge my mobile wifi while my USB adaptor charged my Galaxy Tab S with enough juice for me to check some updates online. And I also took my breakfast inside the car. Well, that’s how I coped. Despite the brownout, I count my blessings that our water supply is steady and we have gas to cook our food.

My virtual office is also convenient. (Mr. Stalker, don’t get any ideas. You won’t be able to find me here on a daily basis because there are other branches in Manila and around Asia that I can go to.) . Though I have unlimited hours at the business lounge, I booked a meeting room for four hours  today so I could charge all my gadgets and work on my deadlines. I will update more during the day.

pac you from mommy D

The memes are really funny. Mommy D and Kim Henares are the top winners after Manny Pacquiao won over Tim Bradley via unanimous decision. In a report from USA today, “Manny Pacquiao’s mother, Dionesia Dapidran-Pacquiao, was just as entertaining as the action in the ring. As her son fought Timothy Bradley, Dapridran-Pacquaio was dealing with the stress of a prize fight as best she could. The commentators speculated that she may have been trying to put a hex on Bradley. She instantly became a Twitter sensation.” Mommy D is clutching on to a rosary in her left hand while her right hand displays a dirty finger or pointing two fingers towards the ring . I think Mommy D is playing “segurista” to make sure both prayers and “kulam” will ensure a win for her son. Many comments in social media show she is the star of the night.

Meanwhile, there are a lot of social media jokes that BIR Commissioner Kim Henares is happy that more revenue will be collected from the Manny Pacquiao fight.

Here is my compilation of memes via Storify.

uphold rh law

Did the parents of this poor boy know that they had a choice on the size of their family? Did they know about sex education? It saddens me that the Philippine bishops misrepresent the RH Law as something that promotes abortion and of adolescent promiscuity. I feel these bishops have been intellectually dishonest and ignored the good faith of the RH advocates. They have failed to proclaim the life-saving and values-formation character of this public health measure.

It is my dream that couples will know about these choices, once the Reproductive Health Law (RH Law) is in place.

I am blessed to be married to the love of my life for the past 29 years, my boyfriend for 7 years. He is my one and only lover and to see our children are truly miracles of God and a union of our love. What more can I ask from God? A baby is a gift of life. Tears of joy always overcome me in every birth of my children. They are truly God’s greatest gifts ever given to me. I wish every mother receives this gift of life.

It is this wish that prompted me to support the Reproductive Health Bill in 2008 and now pushing that the RH Law will finally be implemented.

The Catholic Church here in the Philippines are insinuating that the RH Law is about abortion, at least based from pro-lifers on Twitter.

contraceptives from the Catholic church

More than 12,000 Catholics from five continents answered questions in a massive survey commissioned by Univision and conducted by Bendixen & Amandi International. Topics covered included all the issues most likely to generate lively discussion among Catholics all over the world. Here’s how they responded through this result page.

What I found out is that 78% of Catholics support the use of Contraception. In the Philippines, 68% support contraception. This is an eye-opener for the Catholic Church.

survey of the catholic church

Part of the RH Law is about using contraceptives so you can have babies only when you want to, and so you can achieve a family size you can comfortably support. It is about producing children with love and producing them responsibly so your limited resources can provide them a good life, not one where they sleep in sidewalks. It is about helping women avoid the health complications caused by closely-spaced births or unplanned late pregnancies. Caring about all these things is being concerned with life.

To borrow the words of RH Advocate, Beth Angsioco, “In the name of reproductive justice, our Justices should uphold the RH law.” The health and well-being of millions of our mothers and children now hang in the balance as the future of the RH Law as it is now being deliberated in the Supreme Court.

world cancer day

As a young teen, my almost perfect world started to crumble when my mother died from breast cancer complications in 1976. Life was never the same without a motherly touch but  dad pulled it off so well. He became our mom and a dad at the same time. In In 1999, my 40 year old brother, Oscar died of leukemia (AML- 6) after an unsuccessful stem cell transplant in Bethesda, Maryland.  It is sad to lose two family members to Cancer. I am aware that cancer is  preventable by just having a healthy lifestyle and disposition. This is one reason I want to share World Cancer day with you.

Today, February 4 is World Cancer Day and a new global cancer report compiled by UN Agency, The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) shows1:

  • As a single entity, cancer is the biggest cause of mortality worldwide2  – there were an estimated 8.2 million deaths from cancer in 2012
  • Global cancer incidence over four years increased by 11%* to an estimated 14.1 million cases in 2012 – equal to the population of India’s largest city (Mumbai)3
  • Cancer cases worldwide are forecast to rise by 75% and reach close to 25 million over the next two decades

The release of the World Cancer Report underpins the 2014 World Cancer Day theme ‘Debunk the myths’. The data shows that the world cannot afford to sit back and continue to let the global cancer burden grow. For more information on how to get involved, please visit: worldcancerday.org.

Congrats my dear sister! Myrna Lardizabal de Vera is the 2014 mayor of the City of Hercules, CA. It’s her second time around. She is also the SIXTH Filipino American to become the mayor of this dynamic city. Congratulations!

mayor of hercules

I remember when I helped her campaign in November 2010. Did it even occur to our family that she’d dabble with politics? I must give credit to the citizens of Hercules for helping her with the campaign, even raising funds. They say politics is a dirty game. I think it is a good game played by dirty people. The nature of politics scares honest people away. It did scare my sister many many times. First, it took time away from her family and business and secondly, the criticisms hurled her way the past 3 years.

sister-won
Having this second term just shows her dedication and hard work so she deserves this.

family
Visiting her , rallying during chilly mornings, helping out was so much fun. I didn’t realize she would be a vice-mayor in 2011 then Mayor in the same year . And now Mayor for 2014. I am so proud of my dear sister.

congrats Myrna de vera

Hercules City is blessed to have such a devoted, hard-working, and beautiful Mayor! I pray God will keep her healthy and safe–and sane.

Let me share her 2014 Incoming Mayor’s Speech

Our dynamic city, Hercules, was named after dynamite manufactured by the California Powder Works, a plant located in what is today the city of Hercules. The plant’s leading product was called Hercules, which in turn was named after the greek demigod, Hercules.

Our city’s namesake, Hercules, was the illegitimate son of the greek god, Zeus, and a mortal mother. Zeus’ wife, Hera, hated Hercules so much that she tried to kill him, and when that didn’t work, she made Hercules go crazy to the point of killing his wife and children. To make amends for his terrible crime, Hercules had to complete a series of heroic tasks, or 12 Labors. He completed the 12 Labors by using his strength and courage, then he died an excruciatingly painful death. After he died, Hercules became a god, rising up from earth to join the other gods in Mount Olympus.

I share this story tonight because greek myths do not just tell an entertaining story. They also teach us lessons. We can aspire to be like our city’s namesake Hercules by facing our trials head-on, using our strength, resilience, and courage as a community. It is through how we handle our adversities that we grow stronger and evolve into the special community we have envisioned Hercules to become. Trials should be embraced as opportunities for growth. The other alternative is to give up, settle for mediocrity and mere survival. What will be our story be, community of Hercules? It is up to us for we are the authors of our story.

During the past three years, the city of Hercules has endured several trials. We were all stunned to learn many brutal truths. First, that the city wasn’t flush with money, as our former city leaders had assured us. We discovered the magnitude of our financial crisis, the mismanagement of funds, the conflicts of interest and rampant nepotism and cronyism practiced in city hall, the rubber stamping of decisions. Then, on top of our local challenges, the State abolished Redevelopment. The city was slapped with lawsuits. Properties sold at fire-sale prices. City staff cut in half. Friday furloughs implemented. Community events cancelled. Turmoil and anger filled our council chambers as we scrambled to put bonfires out with band-aids.

Out from the fires of adversity, citizens stepped forward to volunteer, in finance and legal advisory committees and the Bayfront Task Force, organizing community events that staff once used to handle, raising funds to continue library hours. City staff members, who remained, continued working harder with less help and less pay. Residents voted to pay higher taxes to help fill our general fund deficit in the short term while the council and staff struggled to find long-term solutions. The smaller police force fiercely patrolled our streets and their efforts to keep us safe are proven with Hercules being named by Safewise as the 24th safest city in California. Council members, both past and current, sacrificed their time and energies and our families suffered along with us, too

To all of you — staff, community members, family — the Council and I thank you for your sacrifices.

But I’m sorry to say that our sacrifices are not ending anytime soon because in the coming year, we have many unfinished tasks to tackle.

The most visible unfinished task is Sycamore North. This is the third winter that it stands wrapped in Tyvek.

The $5.1 M Ambac lawsuit must be settled, and its resolution lies in the sale of three parcels of land.

The 3 properties, Sycamore Crossings, Parcel C, and Victoria Crescent, are currently tied up in purchase sale agreements and are in the early stages of planning. The development plans on these parcels will forever determine our city’s character and future sales and property tax revenues.

The city’s highest priority development project is our Intermodal Transit Center, planned for alternative modes of transportation: train, bus, and ferry, and a surrounding mixed-use waterfront development. We are fortunate the first phase is successfully moving forward with the help of William Silva and CCTA, but this important regional project still needs millions of dollars more to complete the next phases.

The Hercules Municipal Utility or HMU pending sale with PG&E must be completed so the HMU’s deficits will stop leaking onto our general fund.

Our Pinole/Hercules Wastewater treatment plant requires that the city raise $22 Million for its upgrade.

And, you may all have heard, our current city manager and our planning director have decided to leave the City of Hercules. We thank both of them for their service and wish them well in their new endeavors. I cannot understate the importance of finding the right people to fill the critical roles of running the city and planning our community.

The good news is that all these challenges come at a great time. You have a city council with five highly opinionated members who care deeply for our city. In the nineties, our city council was so divisive that the TV camera had to be shut off at times. The city council members who replaced them vowed to keep a united front, but that resulted in a rubber stamp culture of decision making, leading to the city’s fiscal crisis. I believe, this current council is finding the balance of arguing and debating in pursuit of the best answers yet unifying fully once a decision has been made by the majority. We are all pursuing the vision of our city’s greatness while continually refining that path with valid facts of reality.

On a personal note, I am overwhelmed with mixed feelings for this appointment of Mayor. Only a year ago, there was a movement to strip me of my Vice-Mayor appointment, censure me, even get me to resign, and complaints were filed to civil and criminal authorities. That was one of the darkest moments in my life. I survived my trials through prayer and the stalwart support of loving friends and family. Instead of defeating me, I used last year’s trials as an opportunity to grow and change. I had some sessions with a life coach, then every day I read books on leadership and self-improvement. I practiced whatever I learned during council meetings. I’ve made peace with myself and others for the sake of the greater good.

I’d like to thank my husband, Manny, who stood by my side like a rock. My son, Mark, who suffered along with me during those terrible months. My twin sons, Christian and Emmanuel, for their unwavering belief. My sister, Lorna, my cheerleader. To my friends, family, and supporters who expressed their unconditional love and trust, I love all of you. Most of all, I thank God, for his light and guidance. God Bless the City of Hercules!

I live by ‘Go big or go home.’ That’s with everything. It’s like either commit and go for it or don’t do it at all. I apply that to everything. I apply that to relationships, I apply that to like sports, I apply that to everything. That’s what I live by. That’s how I like it. Paul Walker

I first saw the news about Paul Walker’s death shortly before noon from TMZ but it was a developing story, hoping against hope that it was not true. I thought nothing about it and now as I read my twitter feed, it is confirmed that he really died when a Porsche sports car crashed and burst into flames in Valencia together with another passenger.

Here is probably the last photo of Paul Walker as he got inside the Porsche.

paul walker

Someone was able to take a photo of the fiery scene.

It is really sad to see such a fine young man die especially knowing he was in Santa Clarita for a car show to support the Philippines typhoon relief efforts. “Several of his friends were at the event … and the accident happened very near to the event.”. Paul even had a video appealing for help in his relief efforts for Typhoon Yolanda victims .Paul Walker was joined by the cast of Fast & Furious 7 on the set and made a appeal to join “Reach Out WorldWide” efforts with a donation

Paul Walker will surely be remembered by the Filipinos not because he is a movie actor but as a beautiful person reaching out to help countries in post-disaster situations. While part of a relief team responding to the massive earthquakes that devastated Haiti on January 12, 2010, he saw a gap between the availability of skilled resources and the requirement for such personnel in post-disaster situations. Following the trip he contacted a group of his friends to assist him in forming Reach Out WorldWide (ROWW) with the purpose of filling this unmet need. ROWW is a non-profit rapid response team that focuses our efforts on victims of natural disasters.

reach out worldwide

The “Reach Out WorldWide” mission is simple. ROWW use their network of professionals with first responder skill-sets to fulfill the unmet need in times of chaos, tragedy, and destruction.

“Paving the way for long term disaster relief, leaving it better than when we got there” is a mission ROWW is all about.

In fact, ROWW was one of the first organizations in the 2011 Sendong disaster after the storm had cleared. “We had no idea what to expect. Reports coming in had been pretty vague and we just wanted to make sure we could get out to the people in need as quick as we could and get to work. As soon as we landed we never stopped moving. Whatever we could do to help we did” ,recalled one team member.

paul walker ROWW

It is inspiring to see the selflessness that Reach Out WorldWide believes in so strongly and Paul Walker envisioned the same relief efforts for Yolanda. What man is a man who does not make the world better?

arrivals of evacuees

The tall young man teared amidst the claps of the volunteer marshals as he walked towards the grandstand. He was one of the many evacuees who came all the way from Eastern Visayas. I was not supposed to be near the tarmac. With the “Citizen’s Project Yakap: Hugs, not Hogs” on my sleeve together with #ScrapPork anti-pork advocates, I needed to talk to the Department of Social Welfare Development (DSWD) Director Bonoan. The sight of new arrivals was just overwhelming. They have been through a lot. Maybe they lost their homes, their livelihood, or a loved one.

The grandstand was already brimming with previous arrivals and I could see the anticipation in the air as they await their ride to their friends or relatives.

The new arrivals are brought into the waiting area at the grandstand .

People with injuries are escorted to a medical assistance tent. I saw families, mommies with their children, senior citizens and young adults with their baggages or boxes .

libreng tawad

There are “Libreng Tawag” booths where they get to call their relatives that they are ready to picked up. Those without any relatives are brought to another waiting area and then transferred to the DSWD shelter in Mandaluyong. While waiting there, I overheard over the Public Address System that a group was waiting for a ride to Cebu. Apparently, not everyone

I first came across the mother-baby friendly spaces for the moms and their children arriving from Easter Visayas through Breastfeeding Advocate, Jenny Ong. There is so much love in this project (Check the Bayanihan para sa Mag-InaFacebook page). Jenny Ong explains the project in her post:

Several breastfeeding groups have banded together and will be working with DOH/IYCF Coordinators to set up mother-baby friendly places where moms can get affirmation and breastfeeding counseling. I want to correct the misconception na –pano na mga formula fed babies? mamatay? It is DOH’s duty to dispense formula milk to babies who truly need them. Donations of formula milk are prohibited when made to the general public, when included with the individual relief good packs. However, if it is found that there are moms in the evacuation centers or crisis area who need it, they can get it from the DOH coordinator.

mothers at yolanda

I volunteered last Monday because I know these mothers must be tired after waiting in line for their ride. They need a break even just for a few minutes.

I was pleased to find out that most of the babies were breastfeeding with one or two with mixed breastfeeding. Jenny Ong explains the goals is ” for these kids is to help them get past reliance on milk and eat more solids.”

mothers donating milk

We want to encourage mothers to breastfeed and not give in to donations of Breast milk substitutes. It is great that mother-volunteers are donating their milk by or even serving as wet-nurses. “Breastmilk given to the kids if needed is pasteurized. Donated BM is not the end. it is a stop-gap. the end is put the babies back to breastfeeding.”

Breastfeeding works in times of emergencies as the photo above shows. So much love shown by the mommy volunteers.

This 3 day old was temporarily separated from Nanay who needed to take care of Tatay.

It was a wonderful experience to be with the mommy volunteers because I get to be updated with the latest advice for breastfeeding. While we attended to a baby, a mom proudly told us that she is “purely breastfeeding” then gazed lovingly at her daughter. We affirm her decision to breastfeed and enjoin her to keep it up.

I met an 18 year old mother who came from Tanuan, Leyte but decided to leave because they did not feel safe in their community. Relief only came a few days ago or a week after the devastation. She is just so tired that she slept with her three-week old baby girl while the father watched over their one year old son. So many thousands of heart-wrenching stories out there and you can hear them out by being a volunteer.
