Philippine web awardMy blog , this blog Touched by an Angel… Receiving the Best Website award , blog category of the 9th [tag]Philippine Web Awards[/tag] is a bittersweet feeling. The theme of this blog is mainly about my grief journey. I’ve had websites, and other techie blogs in the past but a personal blog was not part of my plan. It was Luijoe’s death and my grief that spurred me to start a blog, and share my pain so others may know they are not alone. All of us experience pain or losses one way or another. It could be the pain of losing a boyfriend, a girlfriend, a spouse, losing a job, losing a parent or losing an opportunity. It could be the pain of an illness , a philandering spouse, a rebellious child and other life changing events. Pain is a universal theme. We all know that.

Another kind of pain struck me tonight. A pain in the ass kind of pain. My “annoying husband” kept blabbering over and over again that “You are going to win.” I was stressing over my “future” husband’s disappointment if ever I lost the award. I just wanted him to shut up because it’s not a big deal. Don’t get me wrong. Even if he was annoying that night, he’s still a darling . It didn’t help that the rock bands played deafening bass sounds leaving my heart pounding a thousand times.
meandhusband.jpgI was actually surprised to win because I thought this blog’s theme might appear depressing to the judges. Also, my blog design is not original. In fact, I just used one of those freebie templates. I was planning to customize the design with a new header but it was against the rules to do so once you are in the semi-finals. I am assuming it’s the content that got me the judge’s nod. Thanks to the judges. One of them might have been BryanBoy. I appreciate the award because it means more exposure for my blog. More exposure means wider reach to readers who might find comfort with my blog entries. The prize money will go a long way in funding projects for my advocacy, The Compassionate Friends. I placed the award on Luijoe’s Memorial Table (it’s behind me in the photo above) as this belongs to him too.

Congratulations to the other winners of the 9th Philippine [tag]Web Awards[/tag] . View photos of the award ceremony

Thank you for this [tag]Best Website Award[/tag], Blog Category.

Bicol tragedyLike my dear friend Cathy, the photo from today’s Sunday Inquirer moved me to tears. The article on the Bicol tragedy due to super-typhoon Reming (Durian) describes devastation that has wracked Bicol like no other. Not even World War two was like this. I texted most of my friends in Bicol and they have never seen such damage in the years they have lived there. Even Naga which is farthest away from Mayon suffered as well. My husband’s relatives (The Dado clan) are from Tabaco, Albay and there is still no word from them on their situation. No landline or cellphone connection.

Pedro Malate and his son Miguel, in that photo above hold on to each other for dear life, “wearing perhaps, the only clothes they have left. Little Miguel looks terribly dazed, Pedro, in all probability is in shell-shocked state.”

teddy bearI am helping Cathy with her “A Thousand Bears for Bicol” because this is a way to channel our sadness over the Bicol tragedy. Please read her site for more details. I trust Cathy will do an excellent job in delivering the bears to these children in time for Christmas day. Cathy comforted sick children by establishing Migi’s Corner , a play area for these kids in more than 10 public hospitals in the Philippines. If anyone can execute a project for children, Cathy Babao-Guballa , a TOWNS awardee is the most qualified and trustworthy person in the Philippines.

To children, stuffed animals are more than toys, they’re imaginary friends who are always ready to give comfort or play. They provide a certain amount of security in a sometimes scary world. Though it may be a small act, my heart’s desire is to bring as many stuffed toys – ideally friendly looking teddy bears to the children in the Bicol region. I am hoping to raise at least a thousand bears that I can send to the Albay province in time for Christmas, hoping that these bears will bring even a little joy and comfort to children like Miguel who have a long way to go on their healing journey. I am making arrangements with am NGO in the Albay province to ditsribute the bears on Christmas day.

Photographs do speak a thousand words. Great works of photography move you into action.

Help us bring a “A Thousand Bears for Bicol”. To send teddy bears, click here.

EDIT: I bought 10 teddy bears already.

A meeting of Philippine Idol bloggers just before we went inside the theater. Jove Francisco (to my right), a popular Philippine Idol Blogger and ABC reporter told me that Philippine Idol bloggers built up Philippine Idol’s popularity. Maybe it’s true that bloggers contributed to the popularity of Philippine Idol. I remember when I first blogged about Philippine Idol. There were not many readers reading my Philippine Idol entries compared to recent entries. I notice that commercial breaks are getting longer indicating that there are more advertisers. The presence of celebrity guest in tonight’s show compared to the past show a vote of confidence for the Philippine Idol shows.

Tonight’s Big Band Night was such a refreshing change. Philippine Idol felt so alive and exciting. The top 4 [tag]Philippine Idol[/tag] finalists sang songs from the Big Band Era. The elegance of the production design and the songs made me want to dance with my husband. I am such a sucker for old standard music. It might seem boring to the younger crowd but it’s soothing and relaxing. Big bands makes all music sound great.

Gian measured up to the international standards of Big Band music. He was meant to sing this kind of music. I am not too confident if Mau can warm up to western audiences during the competition of a “World Idol”.

Who will be Philippine Idol’s Top 3? My prediction is:

krispy kreme[tag]Krispy Kreme Doughnuts[/tag] arrive in Manila. Sort of. A dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts were delivered at my doorstep today. What will I do with all these golden glazed doughnuts? I called up my daughters at the dorm if they wanted Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. “Of course, send it over”, my daughters yelled. “We will microwave it here”

krispy kremeI haven’t tried their favorite method of eating doughnuts aka microwave style. Maybe it’s the warmth and soft texture that adds to the pleasurable eating experience. Doughnuts are their number 1 comfort food. The 12 golden glazed doughnuts look perfectly glazed. Glazed doughnuts of Dunkin Doughnuts or Go Nuts look sloppily glazed to me. Hehe, there goes my compulsive-obsessive nature.

It has been years since I last tasted a Krispy Kreme doughnut. Sipping my aromatic Kenya Coffee brew, I took my first bite. The first thing that I notice is the very tender texture of the doughnut. The taste is practically the same if one compares Go Nuts and Cello’s. I can feel my blood sugar rising because Krispy Kreme Doughnuts are just too sweet. One doughnut is all you need to eat to get over the doughnut cravings. Later on, I will have to bike for 30 minutes to burn this excess sugar. Krispy Kreme better come up with a sugar free version.

I am an early bird at the First Philippine Blogcon 2006 here at the National Sports Grill, Greenbelt 3 Makati. The reason I am early is because I have to fix my powerpoint for my talk “Content is King”.

5:20 P.M.- The Globe-Innove Group, our gracious sponsors for this event are here busy fixing the place. As you register, they hand out out 100 pesos worth of Globequest internet wifi access. It looks like they are giving out other prizes in their game portion.

6:54 P.M.– Abe and Jayvee are busy fixing their visual presentation. Abe Olandres will talk on “History of Blogging in the Philippines & Professional Blogging” , Jayvee Fernandez on Blogging as New Media vis-a-vis MSM
abeandjayvee.jpg

And Marc Macalua on “SEO and Blog Make-Over”. I had to end my live blogging when dinner started. Just View the Photo Gallery for the highlights of the event.

At the meet, I met new and old faces like:

Abe Olandres; J Angelo Racoma; Marc Macalua; Kevin Codamon ; Jayvee Fernandez; Rico Mossesgeld; Jennifer Velasco (Globe Innove) ; Mike Abundo ; Bimbo Isidro ; Gail de La Cruz; Marc Villanueva; Gloria Gamat; Annalyn Jusay; Markku Seguerra; Jun Asis; Dominique Cimafranca; Ade Magnaye. Sorry if I missed out on anyone. My memory fails me nowadays. Hehe, blame it on old age.

The photos show the events as it unfolded ( I still have to label them soon). Since I took these photos, I am not in the gallery but thanks to Annalyn, here is a photo with both of us posing. Another photo here, thanks to Mimi and Karl and from Eugene.

All I can say about the meet is that it was so much fun. Being the oldest among the bloggers made me feel younger and completely at home. I thought I’d feel out-of-place but no…it shows that the internet knows no “age” boundaries. Maybe we can continue this meet on a regular basis? Now what does Globe Innove think about this?

Yesterday , I celebrated One Internet Day which coincided with the Digital Filipino Club’s 7th anniversary through the invitation of Janette Toral . I caught sight of J. Angelo live blogging during the event and Adrian.

This year’s theme is E-Commerce Build-up for SMEs with topics on:

    1. E-Commerce for National Competitiveness
    2. Data Privacy and E-Commerce
    3. Building Buzz with Blogs
    4. State of E-Payment in the Philippines
    5. New E-Commerce Opportunities
    6. Making E-Commerce Work

But what caught my attention was Maoi Arroyo’s talk on Buzz Marketing with Blogs. Take a look at this latest Blogosphere report (available only to Digital Filipino members which you should join if you’re into e-commerce), there’s an untapped way of talking to the young and upwardly mobile segment of Manilenyos:

18% of internet users read blogs
55% of bloggers are < 20 years old 20% of bloggers are between 20 to 29 years old 71% are male 84% are single 48% are students 97% have their own computers at home

So that means I belong to the 25% bracket of 30 years old and above bloggers and the 29% female blogger? Hey, that doesn’t mean I have nothing better to do. It just means we , female oldie-bloggers know how to maximize the internet’s capability other than just emailing or chatting.

Another aspect in building buzz with blogs is to pay attention to “long tail” influentials like Connie’s
sassylawyer.com. Connie is so popular that her blog was mentioned twice by Maoi. I know that Connie cannot be easily influenced by PR practioners. Watching her on the Cheche Lazaro’s ““Media in Focus”, she mentioned that she will not compromise her blog having ads that are contrary to her food blog’s theme. Corporations now realize that bloggers can create a buzz. Remember the Globe-Innove sponsored meet in Temple Bar? And there is blogcon sponsored by them for September 25. These corporations should be prepared for favorable and non-favorable feedback from bloggers. I even mentioned to Globe-Innove that you can learn a lot from your most difficult customer. Tomorrow, I got invited to an intimate gathering with them. I wonder what they have to say about their products and services this time. I do hope they offer superior services not available from other telecom providers.

Calling all bloggers in Metro Manila. There will be a BlogCon event on Monday, September 25, 2006. Here are the details from Abe and Pinoy Tech Blog

What: Philippine BlogCon (Meet the Bloggers)
    When: September 25, 2006 7PM to 10PM
Where: National Sports Grill, Greenbelt 3, Makati
    Who: Bloggers from all over!

There will free food (snack) and drinks, thanks to Globe Innove through Jayvee’s intervention. Abe added that there will be “No formal program, just meet and greet fellow bloggers. We might do some informal QA though for those interested in some topics like problogging, podcasting, legal, etc.”

    Jayvee mentioned that

If you are a shy blogger and think you won’t fit in, then that’s absolutely preposterous because all of us are actually very shy too.

National Sports Grill is covered by the wireless net of Globe so we might be able to do some liveblogging with great pics during the event.

So what are you waiting for? Register on the wiki if you’re attending the event. Spread the word!

I will be there too. I will talk on “Content is Still King” along with other topics from Jayvee, Abe and Marc. Also, My daughter might attend if she doesn’t have thesis defense the following day. It’s an opportunity for her to meet other bloggers. I can actually bring my husband along since he has a blog but he stopped writing after 2 entries. I don’t think one is called a blogger if there are only 2 entries in your blog. Hehe . Hopefully he can blog more since he’s a gifted writer. He hasn’t gotten into the groove of blogging yet. When I talked to Connie in the last Globe-Innove sponsored meet, she hoped my husband would blog since a male lawyer-blogger might bring a different perspective to certain issues. (Connie and my husband were schoolmates in Law school.) I said that he did have a blog but died on it after only 2 entries. Maybe, he hasn’t gotten inspired yet. Hmm.

    globemeet.jpg
I had so much fun tonight. Actually the most exciting part of the night was finally meeting and chilling with techies and bloggers in real physical time. I am thankful though that Globe-Innove sponsored this meet. For the first time in my life, I felt that I was not alone in my passion for internet work and online activities. I don’t know many people my age that are into the online world of blogging or even e-commerce.

Before the division into 2 groups, early birds like Jayvee, Abe (such an exuberant guy), Kiven, Bimbo and myself ate and talked about well…Google adsense. Psst, we can share Adsene tips some other time.

What can I say? The food, the company was great!

I am up and about at this time (2:00 AM) because I had to pick up my daughters at Eastwood. Now I can’t sleep. *yawn* Everyone is still awake. With nothing better to do, I checked my site stats and discovered a link from Jayvee’s site. As I landed on the site, I laughed when I saw that I was one of the The 12 Apostles of Globe Innove . I hope I am not Judas.

    The occasion?

When: August 31 2006 (it is not on the 30th anymore)
    Where: Temple Bar, Greenbelt 2 | 8:00PM
What to expect: It’s a surprise party (shhh!)

I heard that there were limited slots for this Globe Innove sponsored bloggers meet. According to Abe Olandres, ” they prefer bloggers with a fairly good reach in readership”. I don’t think I have that many readers but I’m sure this blog has a Google presence in a few important keywords. Hmm, I wonder what Globe Innove has to say during the Bloggers Meet. Will it be their unlimited dial up internet, the Broadband internet or the VOIP webphone? The last time I visited their booth at the Rockwell center, the guys remembered me. Hehe, it must be because I was bugging another subsidiary , the Globe Visibility if my Macbook is compatible with their mobile wireless internet. (Visibility works on a GPRS/EDGE platform)

Anyway, the rest of the 12 Apostles
